Q&A Live: Tuesday, August 22nd @3:00pm ET (link below)

Deep Dive Live (formerly Special Topics): Retrieve/Hold Training (part 2) on Tuesday 08/29/23 @10am ET (link in separate post for Inner Circle & Elite Members)

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDAR! :) I will no longer be doing reminder posts as it seems to cause some confusion, so be sure to mark down the date and Zoom link!

LIVESTREAM INFO:

Reminder that our livestreams are via Zoom and I will post the YouTube replay link after the event with a brief summary of the topics covered. You can always go back and watch past livestreams even if you can't be there live. Participants will be muted so please put follow-up questions that pop up during the Zoom in the chat box. Reminder that questions should be related to the topic I am currently covering. If I forget to turn closed captioning on, please remind me!

Those members who are at the "Crew" ($6/month) level or above are able to submit one question per month with their membership. Leave that question in the comments below.

The cut-off for submitting questions is 2 days prior to the Zoom (Sunday August 20th) so that I have time to prepare. Please limit questions to 1 per person so I have time to answer them within the hour. Questions should be general enough that I don't need to know your specific dog/behavior to answer the question (this also allows everyone to benefit from the question). If you're looking for more specific feedback on your dog, be sure to join the Elite or Top Fan membership level for video review of your training.

DEEP DIVE INFO:

The Deep Dive Live this month is going to be a continuation of the three part Retrieve/Hold (formal retrieve/fetch) series. This will be part two. You can go back and watch Part 1 at any time! The focus of this session will be on building the hold. This can be a challenging behavior for many dogs and handlers, so I'll be showing you several strategies for building hold duration with corresponding video examples. Part 3 will be held in September and will be on retrieving and generalizing. This will give you time to practice what you learn this month before moving on. :)

To access this deep dive livestream, a link will appear on the feed for Inner Circle and Elite members later today. If this interests you, you can upgrade your membership at any time, and as always, you can watch any past livestream replays, both special topics and Q&A.

Back to the Live Q&A: Please post your question for the August 22nd livestream below in the comments!

See you next week!

My dog Leo has been doing an AMAZING job with his SD training. Thanks to Doggy-U. I have started his public access training and I noticed a problem. If we are standing for over 45 seconds in one spot he starts to whine and it gets louder. LOL. I believe his whining is more excitement and wanting to check out different areas in the store. How can I train him not to do that? Ignoring him does not work. Some information online recommended giving Leo something to do, like sit and stay. But I'm worried that may not be enough.

I’m traveling next May with my service dog to Canada from the US (3 days in Vancouver and 8 days on a cruise to Alaska). Canada has a law requiring certification of service dogs which the US does not have. What do you recommend when traveling to Canada? Vet’s note? Canine Good Citizen, or other? He wears a vest identifying him as a SD when in public as an fyi. I am aware of rabies certification required from a health perspective but would like to avoid major issues at the border regarding differences in laws if possible.

(My name is Louise): how do you get adolescent service dog prospects interested in training again? From one day to the next my sdit doesn’t find value in me or kibble over the environment anymore and I can’t seem to get her focus back.

The trainer at puppy classes (I have a 16 week old bernedoodle) has told us that mental exercise (training, etc) is just as good as (and an adequate replacement for) physical exercise for puppies. This was in response to me asking about how to get puppies out for adequate exercise, without inadvertently reinforcing leash-pulling. My personal observation is that mental exercise doesn't seem to be an adequate replacement. Perhaps I'm not offering the right type of mental exercise? What are your thoughts on this?

I’m currently working on taking my sdit to different dog friendly stores. He’s a very curious dog and is very driven by his nose. Once we’ve been in a store a couple times he is able to focus better and ignores a lot of things. Right now, is it ok to let him sniff things the first time we go into a store to get his excitement out and settle in? I don’t want to reinforce that sniffing in stores is an ok thing (especially once we move to non-pet friendly stores). However I want him to be able to enjoy working, which he does once he’s not so excited and has had time to sniff and explore. How can I help him be more focused (doesn’t need to be perfect) the first time we enter a store?

How to stop excitement/play barking? My dog Lulu (only dog) enjoys chasing prey animals. While she chases it, she can't contain her excitement and barks. Because of this issue, I sign up for agility classes. After one year of weekly courses, she can make u-term halfway through chasing. She also barks while chasing a small dog. Some dog freeze, then Lulu stop barking. Some dogs will run, and she will bark more while chasing happens when one to one dog is off-leash. I limit her interaction with dogs. Lacking social interaction with dogs may escalate the issue. She didn't have this issue before she was two years old (before she was an SDiT). She is four now. Strangely, she can completely ignore all dogs while she is with her service dog vest. She can heel while walking by a very aggressive barking dog. I watched your video on how to introduce a new dog. Will hiking on a leash with a calm large dog help? Noted: I don't go dog parks. On a few occasions, a free-running dog caught me by surprise. These interactions only happened while I played frisbee with her on an open field. I usually send her back to my car and let her stay in the car while the other dogs pass by. Her recall back to the car/crate in a class is solid. So she won't practice barking or chasing prey.
