Deep Dive Retrieve Part 3: Retrieve and Generalize

Foam tubing works great for anything the dog doesn't like to put their teeth/mouth on as well. They come in all kind of sizes, different thickness levels, even if it doesn't fit all the way around it usual covers enough area for the dog to feel comfortable with the item.

Great tip Melanie! I've also used like plastic flexible tubing - similar idea. I just like the painters tape because I can slowly remove it as they come more comfortable with the feel of the item.

are you telling the dog to get the object or to bring object back to you? Just wondering what verbals you are using while building the retrieve....I'm watching the target video as this question popped into my mind

DOGGY•U

Yeah so both my dogs are trained on "fetch it up" and either indicating the item with a hand signal, or just knowing what item it is because it's the one I just threw lol! Medication is the only item that is named as its own retrieve cue. But I don't add the verbal until they are already retrieving the item.

I am getting my dog to hold a toy purse that will eventually transfer over to my medication bag. She knows the hold cue and will pick it up, but then she will drop it right away. I have gotten her to hold it for 1-2 seconds not consistently, but she is doing it. I have also asked for a hold and I am then asking for an out to try to get her to drop it in my hand rather than the floor. How can I get more duration in the hold before asking for an out. Can I say hold stay then add the out cue?

DOGGY•U

I would use the reverse luring technique for this. But you could try "stay" first as it's an easy one - it just doesn't work often.
