Hey Folks!

I'm so excited to bring you this week's video on intelligent disobedience (or what I think is more aptly named "superseding cues"). It's one of those topics I've thought about quite a bit (I was actually asked to write a paper about it by one of my colleagues at IAABC at one point but my imposter syndrome is killer sometimes!).

In any event, I had a great time working with Lyric (my dad's guide) to give her a tune up on platform work (they hadn't practiced since her placement, 5 or 6 years ago), while getting to show you some of her skills. You'll see examples of training for stair refusals, obstacle avoidance, platform work and traffic avoidance.

I'm really proud of this video and I'd love for you to share it with a friend if you feel so inclined. There's not much out there on this topic, and I think the high level of skill, discernment, and competency these working dogs exhibit should be celebrated.

I hope you enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed making it!

Have a wonderful weekend beautiful people!

Claudia

Does your new course pertain to Hearing Dog alerts? I need to train my Hearing Service Dog to be more persistent. Thanks!

Eve

This is so cool! Guide dogs really are the rocket scientists of the dog world. How does a guide dog keep those skills sharp if the handler can't continue to reinforce them for making the right choice? For example when there is an alligator in the way and the dog turns around, the handler probably wouldn't give him a treat for that, would they? Is there intrinsic reinforcement is keeping the handler safe?

What steps do I need to take in order to become a service dog trainer?

Hey Claudia! You can find the new course here: https://courses.doggyu.com/p/bia It is not a hearing specific course - however, if your issue is persistence and quality of alerts, especially the nose boop alert, the course will teach you how to train a really strong nose boop and then you'd just pair it with a noise instead of a physical cue like the course is designed for. I actually have a friend working through the course who told me the other day that if they hadn't taken the course, they'd just have done it in a much less effective way and now they're excited to have really well-trained alert behaviors. So, I guess in conclusion - it is not a hearing dog course but the framework of teaching a solid alert behavior is exactly the same, and then you'd just pair it with a sound rather than a physical interruption. That being said, there may be hearing dog specific courses from other trainers that may fit your needs? Hope that helps!

This one is a bit complicated and depends a bit on the dog as well. Some skills fall by the way side once the dog is handed off to the handler if they aren't maintained, some dogs work for the praise of their handler, some dogs do it via wrote memorization (aka like brushing your teeth every day - you just do it), some do it to avoid natural consequences, some do it for the intrinsic reward of moving forward (ie. the reward for a border collie IS the herding - GSDs want to move forward) and then when I train clients, I have them keep a few pieces of food in their pocket to randomly reinforce behavior on each walk. So, like in a lot of things with dog training ... it depends! :)

This is such a great video
