Q&A Live: Tuesday February 13th @11:30am ET (link below)

Deep Dive Live: Tuesday February 20th @11am ET  (link in separate upcoming post for Inner Circle, Elite, & Top Fan Members) Topic: We're Trying Something New! Ever wanted direct feedback from me on your training? This month we're doing a Patreon-Member Live Video Review and Troubleshooting Session! (details below)

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDAR! :)

LIVESTREAM INFO:

Reminder that our livestreams are via Zoom and I will post the YouTube replay link after the event with a brief summary of the topics covered. You can always go back and watch past livestreams even if you can't be there live. Participants will be muted so please put follow-up questions that pop up during the Zoom in the chat box. Reminder that questions should be related to the topic I am currently covering.

Those members who are at the "Crew" ($6/month) level or above are able to submit one question per month with their membership. Leave that question in the comments below.

The cut-off for submitting questions is 2 days prior to the Zoom (Sunday February 11th by 11:30 am ET is the last date to submit) so that I have time to prepare. Please limit questions to 1 per person so I have time to answer them within the hour. Questions should be general enough that I don't need to know your specific dog/behavior to answer the question (this also allows everyone to benefit from the question). If you're looking for more specific feedback on your dog, be sure to join the Top Fan membership level for video review of your training.

DEEP DIVE INFO: HAVE YOU EVER WANTED ME TO REVIEW/TROUBLESHOOT YOUR TRAINING? This is your chance!

I'm trying something new! It may crash and burn, or it may be really useful/cool. We won't know until we try!

Please Read All Instructions Carefully: This month I decided that I'm going to try a new format. I'm going to try reviewing a member's videoed training session live. I've always done private 3-minute video review as part of the Elite and Top Fan Tiers. This includes a breakdown with timestamps when I see something I love, or a modification you can make to be more effective in future sessions, along with potential next training steps. So I thought I would have a member submit a video of something they are currently training and might be stuck on, or just want to refine a bit, and then talk through and troubleshoot the specific exercise.

For this first one, if you're interested in your video being reviewed live, I'll have you comment on the Zoom Link Post for Inner Circle members with your interest and the training/exercise you're working on. (THIS IS NOT THAT POST - The Deep Dive post where I want you to comment your interest will be a separate post also on the feed of Inner Circle and above members). Initially, you will just be posting your interest and topic - not any video unless you're actually chosen for the review.

The exercise/video could be loose leash walking work, task training (non-scent-based), some public access work you're doing etc. For this first one, I'm going to pick a person/topic based on what's in my wheelhouse since, presumably, I won't have worked with you before, and I need a topic conducive to this type of review. In the future, I may elect to do it as a lottery type system, but I need to try this out first and see how it works.

Please note: By commenting your interest and topic/exercise on the separate Deep Dive post, you are consenting to having your video watched by all Inner Circle+ members who will be watching me publicly review and troubleshoot the training. While my aim in review is never to be mean or offensive, and I'm generally a pretty positive person, this could potentially be a sensitive ask, I'm pretty honest and direct, it will be live and sometimes my foot firmly plants in my mouth, and we will be looking at specific aspects of your training as part of this review. If this isn't something you want done semi-publicly, please do not throw your hat in the ring.

All that being said, I think this could be a really helpful and fun exercise for those looking for a little extra feedback on their training. And those that are watching will not only be able to see the troubleshooting process, but they'll also see how I assess and review video and what aspects I look at that can effect dog and human outcomes. So, hopefully you all think this is a neat idea. We'll try it out and we'll see how we like it!

Rules:

- Members who are Inner Circle level or above (Inner Circle, Elite OG, Elite, Top Fan) will be eligible.

- Video submission must be of you actually working with your dog on something and not just a general question. We need actual video footage to review.

- Maximum video length is 3 minutes

- You must be able to load that video onto YouTube, set to Unlisted for submission

- You do not need to be able to make the livestream to submit, but it would be cool if you can be there.

Okay, hopefully that all made sense! We'll see how it goes!

If you're an Inner Circle, Elite or Top Fan member you will receive a link to the livestream in a separate post (the one you should comment on to be included as a potential candidate for video review). If you're interested in this topic and are at the Member or Crew level, you can always upgrade if this topic interests you, and get access to all past Deep Dives.

Back to the Live Q&A: Please post your question for the February 13th livestream below in the comments!

See you next week!

Hey! I took a 3-month break from training, due to life. Although I have been training Leo not to whine and that has massively improved. I started SD training again and Leo is SUPER EXCITED. How do I train him to calm down prior to training? Is there a command I can use so he knows it's training time or he is on the job?

I am hearing impaired and I would like to train my dog to alert me to my cell phone ringing. Rather than simply going to my phone, (sometimes on a walk it may be in my pocket, and he’s so small and phone may be up on a table) so I’d really like some type of visual clue. Any ideas on an alert signal and how to train? Pogo is a 3-month, 2.5 lbs Yorkie.

Hi, Obi has been trained on a choke collar. I hate them but he doesn't do well on a flat collar. How can I transition him to a flat collar so we can get away from choke collar. Obi is a rescue and the dog trainers working with him said some dogs will always be on a choke collar. He seems to know what type of collar he is wearing. I've watched your videos about leash training and he does well at home but not with distractions on a flat collar. I have tried with distractions on a flat collar without success. If I change the collar, he does better. Sorry for the ramble.

First question! I'm wondering if you have any insights or tips on preparing for tasking at the dentist. And how to break things down. I need my dog to do DPT for me (she's an established SD) during procedures. I experimented positions using my couch - having her put front feet on my lap with rear feet on the ground. Effective but not sustainable long duration. Having her laying down on me is more sustainable but not as comfortable for me (pointy elbowssss, maybe I bring a blanket?). I'll be going to a new dentist and hope they will collaborate with me. She's been in a dentist office a handful of times; just doing a down next to the chair. Hope that's enough context! Even general tips for this would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have any tips for teaching a dog to walk nicely next to a shopping cart? My dog wants to walk next to the cart rather than next to me. I think its due to concern for rattly cart noises rather than a lack of understanding of heel position.

Melody Townsend

Any tips for having both heel together? Chloe finally has a ok heel, so we are starting to heel together (a lil bit) but they ( both) pop out of place a lot when together. Thanks!!

I have a questions and I’m new so I’m not sure where to submit! I am beginning service dog training with my dog and he is a 3 yo GR. He is still intact and I have been using a prong collar. Any tips on how to transition him off of the prong collar? I would like to get him walking on a flat collar loosely, but my main problem is that he is hyper fixated on sniffing the ground for other dogs — I believe that is because he is still intact. What do you suggest I do or do you have any examples to share? I prefer not to use a harness, because the harness won’t actually keep his head off the ground. Even when the head is not sniffing, he truly is not focused at all— sniffing the air— and doesn’t care about food rewards.

Melody Townsend

Hope to be there but may be out walking. Will catch replay.

It's sideways snowing here - no walkies for us until at least the afternoon. Guessing you don't have that problem down there lol!
