Reading List #16 (Patreon)
Content
I've been reading a lot of stuff in the past two weeks. Juicy things that are going to make the Intelexual Media webseries I'm working on pop severely. A lot of books, primary sources, and articles that you guys aren't allowed to know about because I'll be ruining the surprise. ;)
Here's a few neutral things I've read over the past week that might be of interest to you.
1. A Word About Louis Farrakhan and Tamika Mallory (Terrell Jermaine Starr) 3/9/18
I wasn't aware that the Women's March co-chair, Tamika Mallory, was being criticized for her association with the Nation of Islam.
Read Length: Medium
2) "Tweetdecking" Is Taking Over Twitter. Here's Everything You Need To Know (Julia Reinstein) 1/12/18
I'm ashamed to admit I had no clue this was a thing.
Read Length: Medium
3) Retracing Slavery’s Trail of Tears (Edward Ball) November 2015
A lush piece of work that details how slaves were moved around like cattle. This is the kind of writing that makes me eager to dig around archives for untold history. Soon.
Read Length: Long
4) For Decades, Our Coverage Was Racist. To Rise Above Our Past, We Must Acknowledge It (Susan Goldberg)
The editor of National Geographic made a bold move by enlisting a historian to study how the magazine has been racist in it's coverage of minorities across the globe. I've never been into National Geographic (for some of the reasons listed in this editor's note), but this essay of guilt and shame was still pretty cool.
5. A Bill Promising to Help Sex Workers Will Actually Harm Them (Katie Herzog) 03/09/18
Can we stop conflating consensual sex work with sex trafficking please?! Click the link to find out why disallowing sex workers to ply their trade on websites will actually harm them.
6. How Is Donald Trump Profiting From the Presidency? Let Us Count the Ways (Robert Schlesinger) 3/5/2018
The Chinese government has granted Trump at least 39 trademarks, some of which had been previously rejected, since he took office; Ivanka Trump, the president's daughter and senior adviser, has also gotten at least seven since she joined the administration.
