Throwback: An Open Letter To The Owner of AllHipHop About His Open Letter to Nicki Minaj (Patreon)
Content
This was written in September 2015. In light of Nicki's new slut-shaming comments to Elle Magazine, I decided to run this shit back.
First and foremost, let me say that I am NOT a Nicki Minaj Stan or BARB. Simply a concerned feminist and commentator. Read the letter im responding to in its entirety here.
Dear Chuck Creekmur,
I understand your concern for your daughter being exposed to images of overt sexuality. You want her to grow up and be wholesome and good, the antithesis of the majority of the women written about and featured in the songs and videos on your website. Your popular music blog regularly features music from heavyweights like Rick Ross (Mr. Molly in the Champagne) and Chris Brown (Mr. I Beat my Woman and Deem all Women disloyal)... and yet, your first open letter is penned to Nicki Minaj, who is doing nothing but exposing HER ass cheeks on HER single cover. You acknowledge that Nicki is influential and powerful, but do not admit that you as chief blogger of a popular hip-hop site contribute to that influence and power. If you were truly concerned about making the world a better place for your daughter (and everyone else's, how noble), you could implement your power as a popular blogger and introduce more wholesome musical acts. But of course; that isn't logical, is it? What IS logical is writing an open letter to a grown ass millionaire with the last name Minaj (re-spelling of MÉNAGE) to alter her image & music so you that you feel comfortable. In case you were unaware, that entire sentence was dripping with sarcasm.
It is evident that Nicki Minaj's single cover goes against your morals as a father. But here's the thing... nobody, least of all Nicki Minaj, owes you the favor of giving a fuck about your morals. Nicki Minaj's JOB is to entertain. Your JOB as a father is to parent. To regulate YOUR seed, YOUR child. To instill YOUR values so that she grows up to be happy and healthy in the way that you see fit. Unless Nicki Minaj is your daughter (& that would be impossible because you're technically her son), you can wax poetic about her apparent lack of decency all you wish but it will get you NOWHERE. You cannot tell Nicki, a grown ass woman, to change her art so that you don't have to worry about your daughter doing booty poses in front of her mirror. Your best bet is to monitor your daughter and her behavior. "But I can't watch her 24/7.", you moan. Of course you can't. But you DEFINITELY can't tell Nicki MINAJ to change her image & expect results. Otherwise you would have written an open letter to Chris Brown or Rick Ross... Men who will influence the boys that your ever-important daughter will come into contact with. You're being totally one sided here. You're criticizing Nicki Minaj's overt sexuality but refraining from pointing out other possible factors that could (in your opinion) be detrimental to the psyche of your daughter.
Next, how dare you ask Onika how she feels about Nicki Minaj; her very own alter-ego? Evidently if she's shouting the name from the rooftops as her universal moniker, she's quite happy with herself and image. You asked her what kind of image she is sending to impressionable children- but forget to make note of the fact that Nicki Minaj is under no obligation to be a role model for the children of the world. As previously mentioned, it is NOT Nicki's job to inspire or influence- it is to ENTERTAIN. She will only have significant influence on your youngin if you allow her to be... significant. Quite frankly, your patriarchal mindset won't allow you to see that regardless of how much you may try to stop it, your daughter will one day grow up to be a woman who engages her right to express her sexuality, just as the Nicki's, Beyonce's, Queen Latifah's, and Maya Angelous of the world do.... All in their different ways, of course. You won't allow yourself to see that even if Nicki Minaj had never dropped the single cover with her posing in a thong, it still would not stop your daughter from one day being old enough to make her own decisions about what she believes is sexy. You won't allow yourself to see that even though you sent a message to Nicki that she is inappropriate & should be ashamed for owning HER body & HER sexuality, your daughter will still be exposed to images of sex in other facets..... Someday, somehow. The problem is not Nicki, will not be absolved by Nicki changing her image, & will not EVER be negated by fools such as yourself writing letters to entertainers about their craft. So what are the actual problems? The problem is you placing the wonder that is sexual ownership into a bag, shaking it up, & pulling it out as a Nicki Minaj scapegoat. The problem is you contributing to the sex culture you so desperately don't want your daughter to indulge in. But the biggest problem of all? You're placing too much emphasis on Nicki Minaj as an influence & not enough on yourself as a father.
Good Day,XtraXtraLeX
