Let's chat about a few things-- namely literacy. Enjoy this quick rant!

WORK UPDATES:

I will be talking about the types of media we consume a lot in the coming months, and Lexual Does The 90s will debut this Fall. There's another video coming later this month (a sexy one about erotic literature!!) and a video entitled The Words We Use: Slang. Slurs, Codeswitching, and Ebonics will come next month. I am also finishing turning Lexual Does The 80s into a book, with projected publishing in the Fall.

Thank you so much, as always, for supporting my work. I hope to do you guys VERY PROUD with Lexual Does The 90s. It's all I think about when I wake up, and it feels like an indulgence, spending so much time hyper-focused on creating this series. There will be Patreon-exclusive 90s videos in addition to the full episodes and minisodes on youtube. There will also be fun merch! I love what I get to do and you guys are amazing for all of the support.

Turn up on this video when it goes live tomorrow <3

I’m currently reading “We were once a family” by Roxana Asgarian - a tough but short and well-written read. I haven’t finished yet though. Will also recommend when this drops on YT

I just finished listening to Bart D. Ehrman's "Armageddon" (about the book of Revelations). I love audiobooks for non-fiction. It's like listening to a lecture. Usually I need to be doing something mindless so I can pay attention (like cooking, cleaning or knitting/crocheting). I've listened to a lot of history, science, psychology/brain science, stuff lately. It's the only thing keeping me sane in all this craziness. Truly, everything old is new again. Humans have always been on the same shit, different century. How we help break the cycle of some of our more destructive patterns is really the challenge for those of us paying attention. I love your videos and they often spur me to investigate some topics further. :)

This video was much needed… I realized how short my attention span has gotten… I used to read for hours, even during my downtime at work. I did download the 1619 project to get jump start back to my love of reading history books… now I need a good historical fiction read

And let’s put more money into our public libraries! Get more Leftist books into the library. We talk a lot about education but then we only put funding into public schools. What about public libraries? They should be an extension of how we think and talk about public education.

I restarted my reading journey this year after pausing since I graduated college in 2020 and i’m so glad I did because I only read for class then, its been fun to relearn how to read for myself. It was inspired by my (unrelated) decision to quit most of my social media and although i’m just 6 months in, i’ve noticed a big change in how I view and perceive the world. Its so much more grounded. And kind. Reddit/Twitter were the two platforms that I liked for conversations on more serious/academic topics but they get old real quick because of all the issues you mentioned. The conversations can’t go as far as they should because people aren’t ready/able to have nuanced and measured discussions. I just finished Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver which was an interesting, new type of read for me but it was pretty dark and heavy so I know i’ll need to chill with some more light hearted reads for my next two books. I’ve been enjoying romance for that (looking forward to your video on erotic literature, i’ve been having so many thoughts on the relationship between smutty lit and gender/race/sexuality since I joined a romance book club).

Thanks. Just read “Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead” ane I’m reading the Succession creator’s one fiction book, and ralph is ellison invisible man. Also a teacher in newark and feel you on the screens vs literacy front

I loved this!!! As an academic I cannot tell you what a treasure you are to me. This was an excellent video which should be public. This is the video that we need to go viral. Also, I just finished reading Tressie McMillan Cottom’s Thick: And Other Essays.

You said a WORD and so many of my thoughts with this one! I'm starting Black on Black: On Our Resilience and Brilliance in America by Dr. Daniel Black and How We Heal: Uncover Your Power and Set Yourself Free by Alex Elle. Long live reading, may we learn grow and LIVE!
