The purpose of each deep cut is to:

Give me a reason to gab about an element(s) of pop culture that had a direct or indirect impact on my childhood

Discuss regional history that typically goes overshadowed in history retrospectives

Tie said element to the larger series

Foreshadow future episodes

Be "fun" and "nostalgic"

In this episode, we dive into The Spice Girls and 90s British History. We even talk briefly about the black female music scene in London. I hope you enjoy.

There is a teeny audio issue toward the beginning of the video where scenes are running concurrently. Sorry for the inconvenience!   A lot was trimmed from this episode and I wish I would have had more time to edit. I am looking to hire a part-time video editor in January for this series and the I Love The 90s series because I want these to be as high quality as the main series. I hope it still is enjoyable to watch as is.

Thanks for being a $5+ patron!

If you're interested, you can watch The Spice Girls movie for free in its entirety here.

Mel B was a spice girl??? The AGT lady???

The late 90’s was truly the pinnacle of mass commercial media/money making for major artists. The fact that technology was still physical allowed for a mind boggling amount of money to be made for a major artist. It’s basically the inverse of today where the internet allows an avenue for anyone to go viral. However, Stream rates and brand deals will never hit the same as cd sales and the cultural mania provided to artists of yesteryear.

deez nuts

Honestly does no one understand camp??

Great video! This was a really interesting lens to rewatch some of my childhood through. It really didn’t occur to me how unusual/groundbreaking Cleopatra was when I was a kid. We had a lot of US imports on TV, but their sitcom was pretty much the only representation of a black British family on television at the time.

Alanna Heitman

That fantasy scene with the when they have kids my tiny brain didn’t understand it but I loved itt

Now that I’m really back to work going too watch this one

This made me so nostalgic. I was also a kid when the Spice Girls were huge. I used to watch their music videos everyday! Now that I'm much older and have a better understanding of the way the world works, I see the political and capitalist aspects. Love this video! It's hard to capture everything, but this video does a great job of diving in to explain what the Spice Girls meant to fans, Britain (politically, culturally, economically), race, feminism and so much more!

Thank you for this Deep Cut! While i was very much alive and living during their heyday and rise ...i never really knew much about them. Very informative ...i love that they still have that ability and draw to entertain and have fun while doing so.
