Hello all!

In our recently-concluded Annual Patron Survey one of the questions I hoped to get some clarity on was which 5E adventure I ought to pivot to now that we'd wrapped up Dragon of Icespire Peak.

The results of that question were fairly spread apart, but did have a trio of adventures that were clearly heavier favorites than the rest: Descent into Avernus, Keys from the Golden Vault, and Planescape: Turn of Fortune's Wheel. I think any of the three would make for a good pick, but am hoping that a quick poll here with just those 3 options will help clarify a more decisive favorite.

If it helps, here are how I see the pro's and con's of each option:

Descent into Avernus:

  • Greatest total number of maps, and therefore the longest commitment

  • Generally larger locations in scale than the other two, all more or less pretty "otherworldly", a quality that I understand to be generally preferred

  • From what I can tell, all of the maps original to the module are in black and white, meaning the greatest room for supplementing those (as opposed to the already in-color maps of the other two)

  • Comparatively older and therefore has a greater number of existing maps made by other creators

Keys from the Golden Vault:

  • A moderate number of maps, shorter time commitment (maybe 12-13 locations overall)

  • Seemingly mostly building interiors (though are all pretty diverse within that boundary)

  • Heist-theme throughout makes for a nice premise as well as being more standalone per location, possibly making it easier for others to use them that are not running this module

  • Relatively newer release, fewer other creators having already visited it

Planescape: Turn of Fortune's Wheel:

  • Smallest number of maps (~10?), smallest time commitment

  • Slightly newer than Golden Vault, both released in 2023

  • From what I can tell, definitely the "wackiest" of the trio, with some pretty zany locations

  • Beautiful color maps, but some are more painterly or of a scale that makes them less suitable to typical VTT usage

I'll leave the poll open until Noon EST Friday, April 10th.

I think it's also worth noting that one of the main mechanics of Keys is that players get a planning map before the heist, which means DMs are constrained to using the given adventure maps to ensure the planning map matches. Plus the details can be finicky and hard to transfer to other maps. So Keys relies on specific maps more than most modules. I usually swap in indie maps for WotC adventures since I don't like the given style, but Keys I was stuck with the included ones. I would've loved some Venatus maps instead!
