Hello all, happy October!

Random poll for those of you who play VTT (virtual tabletop): as someone who typically does not play via technology, when you're using my battle maps to do so, do you typically prefer to have them with the grid already, or without?

By my understanding there are often options for both regardless of platform, so please vote below and let me know!

I use Roll20 (unpopular choice atm I know) and having a grid on maps can be a bit of a headache. They do have a tool to align their grid with a maps but it's not brilliant. Much easier to use a map with no grid in the first place.

Sucre

I usually use maps without grid and activate it directly via the VTT when there is a need (like for a fight). I have GMs that only use maps with grid though, so I think your choice to offer both was a good one. Do you plan to change that or do you ask out of curiosity ?

Blackonion

I use Fantasy grounds. I prefer without grid and activate it with the tools of FG.

Andrea Costantini

Getting grids to match in a VTT is a royal pain. I use MapTool on a TV for in-person gaming, but have to turn off the grid if the map has one already.

Martin Blake

I use a VTT and prefer to add the grid in the VTT. However... it is really helpful if there is a small single grid square somewhere unobtrusive that allows the original grid size and position to be set easily. Here's a simple example - there is a black square in the top right corner. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ijzcbahaq0711ff/Marsh%20-%2050px.JPG?dl=0

Most VTT's allow you to set a grid on top of the image, so all thats really needed is a way to align the VTT grid to what the maps intended grid. Some form of square, or other identifying mark to make aligning the VTT grid would be helpful.

Lusty Lamb

Pretty much all VTTs have grid options already so it's not really necessary except for printing, I suppose.

I use Fantasy Grounds and typically use a grid, since it helps me to align the internal grid so that it matches the terrain. If there's no grid, I like having an element somewhere that acts as a key to the intended grid size; this can just be floor tiles in a dungeon. A bad grid is much worse than no grid, however; it can be a significant distraction if the image is scaled such that the grid is not spaced as a whole number of pixels, since Fantasy Grounds at least requires grids to be whole numbers of pixels.

Leticia Sparkman

Personally, I prefer the grid versions, because it makes it easier to align the proper terrain size. I use Roll20 and they have a map sizing tool that lets you just draw a box around a three square block of grid to drop it on their grid at the right size - much easier if you can see the grid. The most important thing for ease of use on a roll20 map is to have the map start and end with full grid squares. A half square at the end requires tedious manual adjusting every time you have to touch the map, because it will snap to grid again if you're not careful.

Could you release 2 versions of each map, one with grid and one without?

Andrew Simone

Most VTT have a grid system used to overlay and let tokens "snap" to it and it can be difficult to get the grid on the image to align with the VTT. Sometime's it's nice to have a one square reference off to the side of the map to give you a sense of scale, but even then, it's not really necessary. I often scale up maps to give players more flexibility in movement.

Will Stevens

2nd the no grid but having a scale square sonewhere for reference

Michael Clay

While some VTT platforms try to help you with scaling the existing grid to line up with the one they provide, it's not always perfectly accurate. You can end up in situations where the lines don't completely match, and that can lead to things actively looking worse and more confusing for the players. I tend to use the maps that have no grid drown on them and letting the VTT platform handle that to keep the maps looking clean and crisp for a smoother play experience.

Jaume Rodríguez Roca

I dont know what is a VTT, anyone can make a short explanation? :)

RedEyes

I use Roll20. It already has a grid. I like the nogrid image that I can place onto theirs.

Sucre

Virtual Tabletop. It's like an online shared whiteboard, but with features that are specifically geared to facilitate gaming in particular (dices, character sheets, etc.). There is a lot of them but the most popular are Roll20 (online) and Fantasy Ground (software).

Brett Richards

Roll20 and most other online tabletops already has a grid, so if the map has a grid on it as well, it can become a bit of a headache because to reduce player confusion you have to align it to their grid as closely as possible. Due to how Roll20 handles images this can be a little awkward and time consuming. Usually I just go into your PSD files and disable the grid, then export the image again. Potentially though, when making just the image post, you could do a gridded and non-gridded version

Gezzer

Personally as someone that has subscribed at the Photoshop level I wish that at least with those maps every graphic element was exportable as a seperate layer including the grid. I have a plugin for Gimp that allows me to export every layer as a separate file that I can then import the image into other maps I make. As for the non-Photoshop versions having at least a no lable and no grid version makes them much more useful for me.

Jaume Rodríguez Roca

Thank you! ;D. I play DM too in roll20 and i did not know that the vtt version was for that xD. Do yes, better without grid

CowaChungaDood

In roll20 it's less of a pain to just simply drop a gridless map and scale to my preferred size than to try and align both grids. Although I do like the idea others have shared of having a "scale" in the bottom corner of the map just to get a sense of the the recommended size at a quick glance.

Fritter Mouthfull

Roll20 already has a grid, so we don't need a grid on our maps. As far as I know most virtual tabletops work the same way. However, if you make VTT versions please don't lower the resolution on VTT versions, we want them as detailed as they can get.

Derek Burge

100% non-grid. Trying to get maps to align with the built-in grid is a pain.

Nefhith

More than a grid, just a 3x3 guide or a square to align the rest of the map is enough.

Nomad

Having a pre-gridded map is quite difficult to align properly without a neat guide to help :D

Ron Offringa

I use gridless, but I like knowing what it was designed for (30x20 or whatever) so I can line it up properly to scale.

Sean Schraidt

If you are going to be gridless, it would be helpful if you have a square 3x3 grid key in the corner so we can calibrate the grid.

Zachary Little

Gridless with a calibratable grid would be amazing.
