Hey folks!

One area of confusion that I've been dealing with on my end over the last few months lies within the realm of actually printing these maps. I've heard different things from patrons and differing opinions from other creators, so I thought I'd come directly to the source--you!

This poll is for patrons that have, do, or intend to print out my maps for use at the table (VTT users, please abstain). Essentially, my goal is to get a clearer understanding of which format(s) are best suited for delivering the maps to you to facilitate making printing as easy as possible. So please indicate your preference below and/or leave a comment to clarify or offer additional insight!

(If you're not already familiar with it, I have an existing printing guide here)

I use posterazor to fit the jpeg images into tabloid size and print them in a shop. Its cheap and looks great. But you have to assemble the maps, thats the only downside

Nic Morgan

Office Depot will print large sized maps as a blueprint, so it relatively cheap ($5.89 in color for 24x36). This is what I do. The risk I run into the grid size is sometimes off, and not a true 1in grid. So if there was some way for formatting to make it easier? I am about to print off Castle Ravenloft... yeeeesh...

Worthy Sizemore

When I have printed maps, I typically print large-sized maps as blueprints like Nic Morgan. But for the most part, I don't print the maps given I use Fantasy Grounds, a VTT.

Kerrie Moyer

Once my group and I are able to meet again in person, I will print via either the large-scale blueprints like the mentions above. Or, if I can't manage that, I will likely print out the maps as interlocking tiles using posterizor or similar.

Frank Bartlett

It would be nice if there was a disclaimer on the PDF saying they were ok to print at a professional printer. Staples gave me crap about printing them on Vinyl.

Michele Sangalli

"VTT users, please abstain" sad VTT user noises

Venatus Maps

Cost-wise that makes a lot of sense! What is the paper weight like? And if you do it that way does it just automatically enlarge it to fit to 24x36?

Venatus Maps

Haven't heard of that issue before, I'll look into it!

Kate Bringe

I print using Adobe Reader set to Poster. Then I piece them together after trimming down. Glad to hear about the Blueprint option at OD. That will be worth it when our group can meet in person again.

As a graphic designer, I have a lot of printing resources, and each one tend to ask for different stuff. So I'll find out exactly what the printer I am currently going to wants.

Ray S.

Typically, editable PDFs are best, which aren't quite the same as printable PDFs. But they offer adjustment for printers who know what they're doing

Deranged Derro

Pre-COVID (obviously using VTT solely now) I primarily use GIMP for editing maps and then export them myself for that good ol' Office Depot blueprint everyone loves.

Phergus

Joins the silent VTT section... ;)

I would need better directions to print images. Paint allows to print on multiple pages but it does size to the number of pages so the size of the grid is not an inch anymore. Additionally it would be needed for me, to know the exact final dimensions of the print, if I size the image with some other software for printing. So I am bit lost how to print an image with correct size on windows, beeing no pro graphical editor but just a user.

Leslie

When we used to meet up to play, I would use Rasterbator to chop up the images and generate a pdf for printing.

Jared Colvert

they tell me there is too much color to print blueprints!

Nic Morgan

Staples has told me there is too much color to print, but I have never had an issue printing at Office Depot/Max

Hi Klaas; as a general rule of thumb you simply need to print any of my maps at 200% size to achieve a 1in scale grid. Have you seen the directions linked in the post's text above? Do you mean 'better' than those?

Klaas Reineke

The directions above only reference PDF files. To print JPG I need to scale myself. But I found an easy solution with Paint.net. I calculate myself how many A3 pages are needed for a "perfect" grid of 1in scale. Then I check your image size in in pixel and create a smaller image, i.e. if I need two A3 pages I am using half the pixels Then I copy your image and move it to have a perfect half of it. Then I print to fill the complete page and do the same for the other half. So I would mean something like I tried to explain here. So yes a bit better :) But for me the printing issue is fixed :)

For starters I don't print. Burning trees for the sake of a single session is pure nonsense, when You can just show map on TV / Monitor / Tablet / Wall Projector. But if I were to print I'd go for sizing JPEG's myself, this gives me more control over the result.

Tsukino Kage

I used to print via Staples, but the price was getting to be too much. I play via discord with a bunch of friends, so we have a webcam situated above a monitor that's laid on its back. We pull up the maps on it and it works pretty well!
