The tux in the closet is a metaphor of what Scott wants from Kip. But Kip needs to live his life in the open. Love the way Jacob Tierney uses little details to tell a story, bring emotions out and propel the plot forward. Conventional Hollywood productions would have used twice the time, 10 times the money but bring 50% less content to its viewers.

Why doesn't Kip go see his dad when Scott is away? Makes no sense.

It is a good question. My take on it was Kip is avoiding his dad because he thought it would be harder to keep Scott a secret in person. Kip and his dad clearly have a very close relationship with his dad knowing most everything in Kip's life. Kip is probably already feeling guilty about lying to his dad. Lying to him in person would be even harder. Staying at Scott's even during away games is Kip's way of avoiding confronting what Scott's closet is forcing him to do (lie to those closest to him).
