They are based off of the "Bad Boys" era of the pistons, known for playing dirty and hard fouling star players. Slam Dunk also has a team like this, also based on the Pistons, and also has a player who is known for injuring star players. I don't watch much basketball so when I first watched knb, I actually asked someone I know who was a big fan about it, and they said that basketball in general in that era was full of dirty plays. Teams even kept players on their bench with the purpose of hard fouling the other teams' players back as retaliation, to somewhat keep each other in check. The refs are braindead though, no arguing that. Even if there was only 1 ref, no way you can constantly perfectly angle yourself to hide fouls, especially ones that big, and it's not like the refs just stand around in one spot.

Sports anime loves the dirty player trope, I imagine you find it in a lot of series because it’s the easiest way to make you instantly hate an opposing team and it adds drama.

I kind of laugh at people downplaying high school athletes getting injured and taking the time to assess their future. My senior year of HS, first day of football camp, opening warmup sprints... ended up with a 3rd degree sprain of my right ankle (we practiced on a shit field and I hit a divot the wrong way). Cost me 3 weeks of my life, 1 of which was on my back on the couch with my foot elevated all day... and I could barely walk on it at all the second week. I don't even know how I made it back to play by opening day, not that I played much, because with all the time I missed I was clueless on the playbook. Doctor said I probably should have had surgery on it, never got it (I love my dad, but he was always cheap when it came to medical stuff). Somehow made it through the football season. Then, first few weeks of wrestling practice, sprained the same ankle... once again on sprints (and this time it was braced and everything). That was when I put an end to my high school athletic career, which was a shame because the heavyweight spot was all mine - while I wasn't a great wrestler at all, nobody on the team was challenging me for that spot. What's sad is my ankle didn't get magically better - all throughout college I would randomly sprain it just walking to and from class, and by this point it only took me stepping on a crack or even a pebble the wrong way. It took more than a decade for my ankle not to heal (to this day, 20+ years later, anyone can compare my two ankles and know something's not right with my right one), but for the ankle to become strong enough not to just roll over randomly as I'm walking along, although walking at times is still a paranoing experience for me. So I don't know about anyone else, but I get where this guy is coming from in wanting to weigh his decisions when it comes to his knee - because it's a choice that can last years, if not a lifetime.

a hard foul is not intentionally trying to tear ligaments in a knee. Its pushing a player going up for a layup or dunk.

yeah i mean, im more on the side he says fuck playing in high school all together, walk on to a college team and get a spot that way, but thats with my american knowledge of college athletics, i got no clue how jp colege sports works.

Oh I didn't know that. When my uncle mentioned hard fouls, I just automatically assumed it meant being extremely rough, to the point of injuring, because of the way it sounds. I get how you feel though, this injuring people for fun in sports trope is not very fun. I'm a big tennis nerd and the characters like this in Prince of Tennis pissed me off.

I don't normally watch basketball, I used to watch soccer ocassionally but give me AFL (Aussie Rules) any day. Your passion for basketball is what makes your reactions different to other people. I think from memory there is maybe one more episode with this team and then they go into another training arc... Not 100% sure because it's been a while but I know Riko's dad comes into the picture for some training stuff soonish.
