I think maybe the author just don't wanna rush the romantic development for them. It is implied that they would start hanging out every free time they get and eventually start dating because we know what characters they are.

It was implied that they started seeing each other. He basically just asked her out. I also wish we could see more. Like I hope one day down the line, we get another spinoff and they're mentioned and they have powerful nepo kids like Boruto.

The other thing was how much hate the author got throughout the series' run. So many toxic fans sent threats and insults because he wasn't catering to their headcanons. There were people on all shipping sides, even people who were trying to ship Eri with someone. Had he overtly made a call, then that would start up again. I would have loved a FMAB like ending credit that showed them together, but I'll take what I can get.
