I feel like the “selfishness” the grandpa spoke about might be a few things: starting from his greed in taking the money that Changyu’s dad gave him in letting someone take his son’s identity. And then that spiraling into all the incidents of the uncle burning the letter, trying to take the property from the sisters etc. I’m inferring that maybe by selfishness he might mean the way he agreed to this on a whim and his family took advantage of changyu’s family while he didn’t do anything stop the uncle. So he’s feeling the guilt of how changyu’s family met an end like that despite being good people, “kind to a fault” and feels like his family played a part of it maybe. And how also the uncle was contributing to more stress and suffering to changyu right before his death. So, the grandfather feels like he doesn’t have the right to complain about his situation now.

I think the grandpa was selfish because he kept the deed of his house from Changyu and let his own son live in it.

Maybe Xie Zheng doesn’t want a sexual relationship with Changyu because he knows he has to leave and may never see her again.

Dilmurod

yeah it's definitely this

That's my read as well.

The bare feet of a woman was regarded as an intimate, private part of the body during that time. So her displaying them bare like that was too much of a temptation for him. He could have slept on the floor on the opposite side of the room. It's a big room. So that tells you how much of a temptation she presented to him. As to why he wouldn't just give in to temptation. Well one, the logistics, because of Ning being there. And most importantly, he doesn't want to start anything with her when it's uncertain if they can be together. He's trying to do right by her. Their marriage wasn't supposed to last. They established that from the start. I think he can sense that they both have developed feelings for each other but he doesn't know how they can make it work, with him needing to go to war and his responsibilities to his clan, but unwilling to shackle her to him.

There’s something so quiet and mature about these two. Even though it was a marriage of convenience, they constantly turn towards each other rather than away which makes it a genuinely strong marriage. They’re like genuine partners in all things. If he wasn’t still hiding who he was (I know why he’s doing it but still) their relationship would so naturally and easily evolve into the deepest and truest love. Obviously we know they like each other and will have this grand love story. But I also appreciate that even if he was just some normal escort guard who ended up here, with the way they act with each other and confide in each other it would still be a beautiful love story built on these quiet moments of companionship.

Sorry I’m just focusing on the romance. The plot is super compelling too! I guess I’m just surprised by how realistic the dynamic between the two of them feels. I’m not used to that in some of the dramas I watch 😅

The foot bathing was an intimate moment between these two. The Song dynasty was when foot binding started to become popular. Womens feet were beginning to be considered erotic among the higher classes. Here Changyu is nonchalant and combing water made sense. Her husband most likely never shared water. Again this illustrates the difference of their social statuses.

i look forward to these reactions. you're such a great reactor❤️

Cornelia

Love the metaphors in this movie.

This has a romantic narrative be there is also the political intrigue that is buffetung around these characters.

I kept on asking myself about what was the significance of the long hair with the chapracters, especially the men? Like our Western Civ background rooted in Greek, Roman and Judeo Christian thought, China, 1000s of years old, followed Confucious, Taoism and Buddhism. It was a belief of Confucius that one generally did not cut ones hair, hence the long hair flowing down the backs of the male actors.

Lani S

I agree about the quiet moments. That's why I love their story. They fell in love doing mundane, every day things. There's no grand display of affection (not yet at least). It just developed organically.

Carbon

Same I love how nice they are to each other and how they look out for each other. It's meant to be romantic, sure, but even without the romance, it also looks to me that they built an actual friendship and kinship. It's sweet.

In the novel Changyu's dad was a member of the Fan family originally but due to financial reasons all the kids were sold off including Changyu's father. When he comes back he takes the name of his brother who died of illness or whatever instead of keeping his original name. Grandpa's wife is just as spiteful and selfish as Aunty and blamed Changyu's dad for the loss of the other kids in the family. Because Uncle was the only kid left in the family he was basically spoiled rotten by his mother and his father didn't discipline him properly or hold his wife accountable because of the guilt he felt over the other kids being sold or dying of illness. Uncle found out that Changyu's dad had left a will and out of spite and jealousy tore it up/burned it, because he wanted all the property for himself. I think that covers everything regarding that which isn't in the show.

Oh no, I came for episode 16 as an extra since you already watched it. But it doesn't seem to be available yet. 😂
