Great reaction Joe . understanding the plot and details, the way each character feeling and thoughts are the best way to enjoy the story. That’s what separates you with others reactor. Can wait for episode 18 & 19.

Li Xing is Grand Tutor Li's name . Xie Linshan is Yan Zheng's Father , General Meng is Changyu's Grandpa ( motherside ) they both Died 17years ago during war.

Qi Min is sick, not dying just sick since surviving the fire of the Eastern Palace. That's why he's not considered Changxin's heir. Zheng acting more like the Marquis or army general with Changyu by the dock is like his defence mechanism. He's trying to push her away because he knows that people are after him. The tools left by Zheng with the wrist guards he made for Changyu are for leather work. The constant sniping back and forth between Grandpa Li and Uncle Wei is definitely masterfully done. The innuendo in every word spoken is just another jab at the other side. Song Yan had 3 years of tuition paid for by Changyu's parents. How long he studied on his own before he entered a school is never mentioned. Li Xing is Grandpa Li on the council, plotting and scheming. I have read almost 70 chapters of the novel and only just now getting to this part of the story!!

As always, another great reaction! Real, sympathetic, and such great character analysis. The fight between the couple in this episode felt so genuine given who they are — first love, first real fight, and having to separate while still deeply in love. People say things they don’t mean under stress, and we’re often the worst at communicating with the people closest to us. And I think people sometimes forget these two had just gone through an incredibly stressful day dealing with the riot and Sui Yuanqing, with Xie Zheng being provoked, while Changyu was carrying all the fear and helplessness about their relationship inside too. Neither of them was in the best emotional state, which made the argument feel very human rather than dramatic for the sake of drama. What really hurt was Changyu being so straightforward and sincere — asking where they could go and whether he would come back. Those are such simple but important questions to her. But Xie Zheng couldn’t give her a straight answer… not because he didn’t want to deep down, but because he himself didn’t know what future he could promise at that moment. That uncertainty came through so painfully in the scene. What I love is that the show doesn’t make either side completely right or wrong. You can understand both of them emotionally, which makes the conflict hurt even more. p.s. The dialogue between Wei Yan and Wei Sheng contains important information about 16 years ago. Wei Yan and Li Xing (Li Huan’an’s grandfather) both served in the Eastern Palace. In Chinese historical dramas, the “Eastern Palace” refers not just to the Crown Prince’s residence, but also to the Crown Prince himself, his political establishment, and the entire faction surrounding him. So the drama is hinting that Chancellor Wei and Grand Tutor Li were once allies serving the same Crown Prince before something caused a major political split 16 years ago — one that still affects the present storyline.

He wasn't expecting to be shanked because he serves Qi Min's father. So in effect he had more authority.

Amber

The Netflix translation of the first scene is not correct. He never says “My affairs are none of your concern.” He actually says “You don’t need to worry about my affairs.”

Cornelia

Yes so true. Spending some time to get the folks straight really makes a difference and helps one appreciate the narrative more.

As we move through this I would not be surprised if the Sui brothers were related somehow to the very immature current emperor. I have watched a number of CDramas and I have yet to find a series this satisfying.

ONE OF MY FAV EPISODES, real turning point into more lore and plot! always love your reactions ❤️

When Qi Min was asking if the messenger has found the "heir", he was referring to Sui Yuanqing. Remember that he fell into the river in the last episode but his body has not been recovered. I'm glad you're enjoying the political intrigues because it gets more intriguing. :) the story likes to drop hints in dialogues that of course, when it's your first time watching, you won't understand. But if you're paying attention like you do (good job!), you can sense that there's something off (ex. when Wei Yan's wife called Xie Zheng his heir, and why her relationship to Wei Yan doesn't seem husbandly, and why she seems like a nice lady but doesn't defend her son in front of Wei Yan). Keep questioning things!

The other thing people forget is back then, when all of the men got conscripted, it left villages, especially small ones, open to danger, because all that's left is children and women. I'd be taking my woman, and her sister is basically their daughter at this point lol. I mean, look at Ms Yu, that town was being attacked by bandits, and no one was protecting them. There's no one there to do so. During the fire scene, my husband was mad at Zheng more so, because he had so many chances to be honest, and never told her the truth. She would've been more understanding lol He was like you don't deserve to kiss her fool! XD

Romance dramas love this story line of I will leave because I love you. It is a bad plan that will fail every time because they are romance stories.

The Scholars have multiple levels of exams and they are only available every 3 years in the capital. I forget if the regional one he passed is on a shorter schedule. But Scholars in these dramas tend to be geniuses or politically connected if they pass fast. The other option is they are regular or poor and it takes decades.

20 something episodes in the future Wei Xuan's return home conversation will make way more sense. That's the fun thing about C-dramas or the biggest annoyance.

MinLuna21

now i cant wait for your reaction to ep 18. I will miss the lin'an arc

Xie Zheng's mother was Chancellor Wei's younger sister whom he adored. After the death of his parents 17 years ago, he was raised by Chancellor Wei and his wife. The chancellor must have had great hopes for Zheng because it was mentioned in an earlier episode that he hired the best masters to teach Zheng while he was growing up.

CA

It didn't seem like the chancellor wanted Xie Zheng to die since he did not order his assassination. His son acted on his own. The assassins that went to Changyu's house were there for the Fan sisters, not Xie Zheng.

FreshestAnime

"first love, first real fight" thats a really good point too. I dont remember if i made that point or not, but it being a first relationship makes things even harder to deal with for them

Cornelia

Me too. I loved the acting of the characters in this village.
