I feel like your problem with the way Sasaki defended Yamada is really just a Japanese vs American disparity. He's making it all about himself as a way to diffuse the situation. We Americans love to escalate.

27:10 I actually prefer this version of the trope to the other similar one. I hate when its a scenario of one act of random kindness of 2 characters that never interacted before leads the girl to becoming obsessed with him for years and that's why she likes him despite the guy having nothing else going for him. At least this one she isn't attracted to Sasaki because he was "that guy" from 8 years ago, he just reminds her of "that guy" and she is developing feelings for him because of their recent interactions as shown in the mini ep 11 montage.
