I think the challenge this show had was it tried to go a Tonikawa route but missed the mark. Like season 1 was great imo and did a good job with character development and so on which eventually led to the confession, but season 2 had nothing else going on only the small drama moments here and there but nothing else of substance which generally is a problem I think a lot of romcoms face after the confession which is where most stories end except for a few. Generally some series I think are better to pick up in the LN or manga and this was one where season 2 wasn’t specifically needed. Either the stories end with a confession and brief look into the future or they get together early on and build characters and situations around them (Horimiya, you and I are polar opposites, etc).

That's really a challenge for a writer. But it needs to be committed to early on in the writing process. The emotional arts are all about building and releasing tension. Unless you build in another source of tension it is really difficult to keep things interesting once the tension has been resolved. In your examples. Tonikawa centers it's tension on Tsukasa's backstory, While Horimiya, Polar Opposites and a few other titles successfully pull off the post coupling tension by having an ensemble cast to shift the focus of tension. Fragrant Flower will probably continue on well because it has built in the tension of external pressures, another classic tension source. Angel just never had the room written in to build any tension once it resolved the will they / won't they tension. Families approve or are indifferent, peer pressure has been given the big FU. All that was left was to pivot to a SOL of the same conversation on loop.

Yeah I agree for me as a viewer Tonikawa was just a fun slice of life with the added intrigue Tsukasas backstory and generally them also still have those moments of then still getting to know each other. I agree that it’s a tough thing for writers in general to keep a couple interesting especially when they get together and only focused on them. I also feel I briefly mentioned but this show shouldn’t have gotten a season 2 as there are details from the LN that were kept out and for this story you need every single level of detail for it to make sense which doesn’t happen a lot. Some materials can’t be transferred into animation and we’ve seen that with some shows already not just Angel next door.

I'm giving Angel Next Door S2 a 6/10 S1 had a solid premise and it worked, but S2's post-coupling fell off dramatically. The second season overall wasn't bad, but it wasn't really compelling either.
