Wonderful episode. At the ending we are being set up for one of the more erotic scenes in episode 38 I have scene in a TV series. Remember he is still under the effects of the aphrodisiac where the eunuch tried to trap him with the Princess to get them to consumate a relationship.

They tuned down the male lead a lot compared to the original novel, for fear of censorship (they did the same thing with the male lead from The Prisoner of Beauty). There are still traces left of the OG character here and there, like when he cut the ear, killed the eunuch, was going to kill the man who wanted to adbuct Changyu way back when etc... And his character is basically sidelined in the second part of the drama in favor of pushing the Changyu Flower General plotline, which is a shame. He's got a lot of aura. Scary and very interesting character.

these scenes are actually the cut versions due to censorship. I remember seeing a very funny "after" scene between the leads on youtube. I wondered why they cut it since it was funny and not sexual.

I think the key here is how they tried to set up ML. All the women in the palace (not related to him) belong to the emperor. So if he was caught in a compromising position with the maid it would be a death penalty. At the end, Chancellor Wei hints that the Emperor pulled a similar trick 17 years ago. That's why he was quite worried when ML disappeared during the banquet. Also, the poison ML was given had two purposes, not only the aphrodisiac but also to make him lose his strength.

I'm so excited for the next episode. After you finish the series you should look up the cut scenes! Also, the actor who plays Marquis is a gorgeous man and has a Jaw line of gods. XD My husband said the same thing about his beard haha. Also so glad Gongsun stood up for his woman, even to the emperor.

As always Netflix translations are lacking… The conversation between Wei Yan and the Emperor were more along those lines “ If it was the old Emperor, would you have treated him this way?” “ Has your majesty forgotten how you got to power?” . He literally mean that he didn’t treat the old emperor better, since he’s the one that made him abdicate.

wei yan got suspicious about emperor & li's reaction, then burn the palace to erase evidence shows that he is concern about xie zheng, he is ruthless tho, he doesn't care who is inside, he burned it all this is not shown or implied in the drama, but in the novel, xie zheng is able to regain or get out of the drugged state for a moment is because changyu help him relieve using her hands...so yeah (btw i like your innuendos, it's funny and i don't think it's offensive as i feel like most of your audience are mature). to answer one of your question, historial chinese drama are very similar to anime where if a man saw a woman's underwear, she is subjected to marrying him, anything really, a man and woman caught in compromising position, shared a kiss without being married, any book i read or show i have seen during regency era share the same rule about women, so it must have been the same for most part of the world

Also in the bushes for the kiss scene i believe he says “i really like you” 喜欢 - xǐ huan It sounds like Zheng says wo jin da xi huan - which translates to “I Really do like … *kiss*” 😂 i could be wrong though

Yes! You are so right lol but in cdramas, especially time pieces like this, just being ALONE in the same room without another witness can be considered damaging reputation, if you arent like family. So yes, just him picking her up, touching her chest, kissing her 🤦🏻‍♀️ dang she must marry this man after he “defiled” her like that 😂😂😂

Yeah, I said in the past that the marquis is after the emperor in power here but that is in theory because yes, no one could have taken him in that room, not even his wife, like let's be real, we have not seen a single real fight with him for a reason and Changyu was pushed more for the same reason, like I love how we have a female centered cdrama (we don't have many good ones put there) but I can't just forget the logic, he is supposed to have more experience and some crazy achievements, that's why everyone is afraid of him and he can do what he wants (again, you will see that very rare in these cdrama, if you start watching more cdramas where you see other emperors and ministers in court, you will get how badass was Xie Zheng in this one😂). And as another comment says it here, they had to tone down the male lead due to censorship, they do it a lot in general in these cdramas but there are also 2 other reasons for that: 1 - Time constraints, they only had 40 episodes and while the novel had more of Xie Zheng, it was still pretty much Changyu's journey and if we have to compare, Changyu's rise was definitely portrayed better in the novel, like they didn't show enough of that either. 2 - The budget, the fighting scenes are very expensive and even more when someone big as Linghe does them, they definitaly had to prioritize and show what they consider more important. Even the director admitted that even those few war scenes could have been better. And one fun fact since you praised Linghe's jaw, the novel is kinda crazy about Xie Zheng being very good looking, the author described Xie Zheng's beauty in entire paragraphs, I even had to skip some of it at some point😂 So yeah, they definitely chose the right actor for the role, Linghe is the perfect choice.

Apparently Zhang Linghe put ON weight/muscle to play this role and was 76k (167lbs). He's now back down to 68kg (150lbs) with just 8% body fat.
