For Wei Yan, even if what happened back then wasn't his fault, everything after is. He did kill people, tried to get rid of Xie Zheng ( in the show its Wei Xuan if I remember but in the novel it was Wei Yan ), put the blame on Wei Qilin, and got them killed as well as trying to kill Changyu and Changning. He also did abandon his post back then and and rebelled twice. So he's not all innocent either

For non romance Cdrama, I would recommend "Legend of Zang Hai ( technically there is romance but barely.) It's about revenge and it keep you on the edge of your seat till the end. Really good plot and phenomenal acting from the ML. I also recommend " Mysterious Lotus Casebook ". I'm currently watching it and it's really nice. It's a Wuxia ( story about martial art), and it's more comedy, action, investigation and bromance. I really love the ML.

Djahmine H-R

And I'm still gonna recommend romance because a lot of C-drama has romance and it's mostly what I watch. For modern ones : When I fly towards you, Hidden Love, The best thing and The First Frost. And for costumes drama: Legend of the female general, Fated hearts, How dare you!?, Coroner's Diary.

our couple finally got their happy ending with the mention of their children; a beautiful journey that i would always go back to rewatch. their lil cute scene with changyu wanted to make sure her ribbon intertwines with xie zheng’s but he already made sure all the ribbons had their name of it so no matter where it landed their fate wokld always intertwine like they are so downbad for each other 🫠 the heartwarming scene of changyu going back to lin’an with her imagining all those who lost their lives, happily welcome her back 🤧 last emperor is the biggest villain, but wei yan is not without fault; he chose to abandon his mission to help crown prince & zheng’s father and reroute to “save” rongyin instead; deep down he might have raise xie zheng to be the most formidable so one day he would make him pay for his mistake. thank you very much for reacting to this show! I have truly enjoyed watching it with you, and is very pleased you enjoyed it! this show has led me to your channel and your patreon, it’s a wonderful journey, thank you thank you! 🥰 and thank you for giving it such a good rating! this is currently the highest rated cdrama on mydramalist ☺️ i highly recommend “Coroner’s Diary” for next cdrama, this was more like Detective Conan/Case Close kind pf drama with romance as subplot, it is very interesting so i hope you get to check it out.

Qi Rong Yin was the former emperor's consort. Qian Qian was from modern times, that's why she knew all about business and the CPR. That's why she said she was from a very very far away place and couldn't come back. For me, the biggest villain will always be Grand Tutor Li. If only he didn't tell the former emperor about Wei Yan's words in that night. Thank you so much for your reaction. This is my first Chinese costume dramas and I need few times of rewatching to understand everything, but you get it in your first. Btw, for fun fact, actually Zheng already changed all the red ribbons in that tree with the same writing (Chang Yu and Xie Zheng forever and ever), that's why he didn't look worried even if Chang Yu's ribbon didn't intertwine with his because it already did (no matter where she threw it). And he didn't want his wife to know his craziness, so he took her away.

JennX_10

Really want to mix it up?? Modern day AND no romance? The King’s Avatar. It's about gaming too.

Florina Niko

Yeah but once you made a bad choice, you usually have to keep doing it, no one says he is innocent but his fall happened with his first choice and it's a shame. That's why we see him being a decent person in that alternative life, he could have ended good.

Willy Ng

What a reaction journey with you Joe. Now next Cdrama “how dare you?!”

Cornelia

I have watched CDramas yet would sometimes skip episodes. This one is quite a gem. I hope the online book to this is translated. This one is a little more complicated in the political landscape. But it has taken China by storm. 800,000 folks have visited a scene location of a palace. One can rent costumes and be dressed for Cosplay. They sell out in a few hours. Most CDramas that I see on Netflix that have a romantic. theme. But I will check. The genre of CDramas has really improved in internationally accessible priductions. China sees it as a way to expand its influence through soft power. I joined your Patreon specifically for your coverage of this drama. I will now move over to Prisoner of Beauty.

Cornelia

I just started The First Frost which is on Netflix and has high ratings.

Florina Niko

I actually got emotional for Wei Yan too, he annoyed me in some episoades but you can tell that he really loved Xie Zheng, they felt like father and son to me. Even more after seeing what could have happened without that fire. And it's kinda similar for Qi Min, his trauma was too big because of that fire. And by the way, Qi Min was already very sick and had a weak body but still survived that fall😂 I felt like they did too much with that but I guess they wanted a last scene between them. My first time being here, I subscribed for POJ and I have to say, I enjoyed your reactions more than I thought I will. I really liked how you figured out stuff quickly, how you paid attention to everything, even though it's your first cdrama and you weren't familiar with some terms, you even search it up for it, like even the jokes, I loved that. If you love a show in general, now this is an example of a reaction that you want for that show, this is probbably my favorite reaction of POJ, I know they are making multiples ones right now (because it's that popular) but I really doubt that I will find a better one or close. Thank you very much and maybe I will come back at some point, hopefully to another cdrama with Zhang Linghe because I have an era with him right now😂 The Best Thing was also very popular between the modern ones, the main genre is romance, it's a healing story. And my favorite cdrama with Linghe, Story of Kunning Palace, it's mainly about palace/court politics and a little romance, now this is my first time watching a show with you so idk how much you can enjoy the politics, POJ just had a side of it, if you know you don't like it, I wouldn't recommend Story of Kunning Palace. He also has an upcoming republican cdrama for later this month, it's called Overdo, the genre seems to be drama with some romance, I also saw some fighting scenes in the trailer, his character has a position in the military. I was just saying for the future, not necessarily now. For non romance cdrama, I can't even think at one because although not fully romance, most of them do have some romance. POJ didn't have fully romance either, especially the second part, like I literally know people who skipped many scenes because of that. I know that you are reacting to POB right now and that one has more romance in comparison. Or you could go with something completely different and try the xianxia genre (basically fantasy), there is some romance there too tho. My first language is not English so hope it's clear:)

JennX_10

This is a fun one but does have romance. Going to be hard to find a c-drama with no romance at all.

Cornelia

And I will add to this list of recommended CDramas that do not have a romantic twist for folks to look at. 1. RESET 2022 It has received 8.1 /10 IMDb. Is Sci Fi about moderntime gamers being stuck in a time loop. It is on Youtube with English subtitles. This is another series that took Asia by storm. 2. Nirvana in Fire. 2015 Historical, Political Revenge A Historical revenge drama following a Strategist. This also is on Youtube with subtitles. I have 1st episode queued up to watch. 8.9/10 IMDb 3. Joy of Life; Historical, Sci Fi, political intrigue. 2019 Tang period, alternate history of dystopia. 21st man reborn in Midieval Period. He uses modern knowledge in ancient times, to solve assasinstion attempts in the Royal family. We have seen this in movies and literature. Mark Twain tried this trope. It might be interesting from a Chinese writer's perspective. 4. Longest Day in Chang' gan 2019 Tang Dynasty. Mystery Thriller Action; Condemned Prisoner has a day to foil a terrorist plot against the Lantern Festival. Non existant romance All of these are on Youtube with English subtitles with little or no romance. Highly recommended. Over the next 2 days I will watch Pilots. With Pursuit of Jade it is throigh the female lens. These above low or no romance series are from the male lens.

LindseyB

My only dislikes with the series are a) i didnt think the What If? epilogue was necessary and I didnt really care about it. b) I would have preferred to see some more of them together in Lin'an at the end with their kids instead of the 5 year time jump.

vonh's palette / art snail mail club

I think I remember you mentioning that you've seen Link Click in the past? There's a chinese live-action which has 24 episodes :) Would be interesting for you to do a comparison haha

DramaWatcher

couple of things to note: - in one of the earlier episodes, Grand Tutor Tao analyzed Fan Changning's destiny and predicted that her future holds great nobility and auspicious luck. This was referring to her future as Empress. - in the novel, Yu Qianqian is supposed to be a time-traveler/transmigrator whose soul came from the modern future with retained memories. Hence her knowledge of CPR and relatively modern business techniques. Also after Qi Min dies, she tells Changyu that she came from "really far away" and cannot go back.

SJN

I liked they showed an alternate reality and emphasised that they would have all been in the same social circle had the events 17 years ago not happened

Leon Tan

Same as me, the same switchup from hatingh Wei Yan at ep 39 and having doubts at the end, to feeling and shedding tears for him, understand why he did all those things but still wasnt spared from the death penalty because he DID in fact still committed those crimes afterall

Sinha

I died when you said is Qi min pregnant

Tizzel

I think you would like Reset its kinda a murder mystery

DryLtd

Being a content creator I have always understood concern about length. But when regular people who just watch TV talk about length I wonder what TV show they are trying to watch instead since their time is so precious. Maybe I will get a recommendation. That's why I press that type of person.

Ping Tuo

Weiyan’s intentions are fine. But he did do a lot of unnecessary evil. For example, when Zheng started to look into the Jinzhou incident, Weiyan could have sat down with Zheng and explained everything, instead of murdering Changyu family.

RahaMi

Sooo soo love your reaction.. It was a wonderul journey watching this with you

DryLtd

Everyone is telling me about this Coroner's Diary. But I don't know if I want to add Iqiyi to my list of subscriptions.

Dilmurod

Are you taking suggestions for new dramas here or going to create a new separate post for it?

RahaMi

Writers and director played with us regarding qi min .. We all felt that way

Tommy Tang

You once mentioned in one of your POJ reactions that instead of watching several romance dramas back-to back, you want to switch things up, maybe trying a thriller instead . So for a non-romance C-Drama, I highly recommend Reset (2022), a 15-episode modern Chinese drama. A Perfect palette cleanser from costume/romance dramas and a must-watch.” Picture this: a bomb suddenly explodes on a city bus, killing everyone inside. But right after the explosion, time resets. Our male and female leads wake up on the same bus, same day, and they quickly realize they’re trapped in a deadly time loop. They have to work together to figure out who planted the bomb and how to stop the explosion — all while the clock is ticking. Every loop gives them new clues, but one wrong move means everyone dies again. The tension is insane, the mystery is addictive, and the suspense never lets up. It was one of the most hyped and highly praised C-dramas of 2022 — it completely blew up online. It’s super smart, super intense, and has that perfect mix of mystery, suspense, and there are so many ‘what the hell’ and ‘no way’ moments.

MinLuna21

I really am looking forward for THE FIRST JASMINE soon.

chokoostar

Try watching JOY OF LIFE. Can’t recommend it enough

Vinzo.

I know you dont want to be recommended a romance drama but "The First Frost" is just way too good for not being recommended. In my opinion it is the single best cdrama out there with good chemistry and plot. Enjoyed your reaction for PoJ and hopefully you will enjoy the next cdrama, whatever it is!

MinLuna21

At the end of the story he was choking coz in his past life he drank the soup Qian Qian made and died from the poison, his body remembers it xD

CA

I have watched both Nirvana in Fire and Joy of Life. Both are excellent. Nirvana in Fire is one of the most watched cdrama of all time with 13 BILLION views! Joy of Life has 2 seasons so far with season 3 anticipated to be released later this year. Both season 1 (46 episodes) & 2 (36 episodes) are excellent. It may be a bigger commitment than some people may be willing to take on, but they are definitely worth the effort.

CA

I am also currently watching "Mysterious Lotus Casebook" and loving it. "The Legend of Zang Hai" is also great. The story is told from the male lead's perspective, so it's a nice change from Pursuit of Jade and Prisoner of Beauty. Both would be excellent choices for your next cdrama.

CA

That is so sweet. Such a cute couple ❤

CA

🤣

CA

I saw your reactions to POJ on YouTube and I love them so much that I joined your Pateron. I really like it that you look things you don't understand up to help you better appreciate the show. Your comments and reactions are so funny, especially the inappropriate ones 😂. They are hilarious I am also loving your Prisoner of Beauty reactions. Keep up the good work.

Mad Hatter

im very much in agreement with some others about Mysterious Lotus Casebook. it is older, has that old cdrama vibe to it, more martial arts focused and has barely any romance. like most of the canon romance was mentions of a past love. queer undertones, but with china's writing its pretty much nonexistent and can be enjoyed fully as just a story about a martial art's hero and his experiences.

Coco T

It's truly a long show. But with this story and these beautiful faces, I'd watch it for 100 episodes haha.

Coco T

There maybe not perfect with the plot. But for me it's not the only important thing, everything else matters too. So even if there are some mistakes in the plot, generally speaking the show is pretty good already.

BTS_ARMY NOONA EVENTS & MEETUPS SEATTLE

I think they all have an element of romance or romance. But here's my suggestion that havw strong martial arts and/ or mystical powers. 1. Guardians of the Dafeng https://share.google/vWTMqT2eIaqhh2aOP 2. Story of Kunning Palace https://share.google/NFLAY1pnIjKLkHmYW Palace 3.Love Like the Galaxy https://share.google/iQBfeGq5f1iJOTJlu 4. Who Rules the World https://share.google/gxXyyQKdjRFAaQU8H 5. Legend of the Female General https://share.google/7XrovpbuVKJ3w1cH9 6. A Splendid Match https://share.google/abzBttGLa1wKHLxOG

Coco T

The alternative reality told us if it were for the terrible late emperor, how good life could be for everybody.

Stephen Fontana

Most of these Chinese costume dramas are somewhat romance oriented, besides the one's below, here a a few more action orientated ones; The legend of Shen Li, Qingchuan's Veil of Vengeance, Wonderland of Love, Mirror : A Tale of Twin Cities Full Episodes, Back From The Brink , there are many many more. enjoy

FreshestAnime

There will be specific recommendation post(s) at some point soon

Shellee

Very good show. Very good reactions. I am so glad you stuck with it. All 40 episodes. Just know that is par the course for C drama. None of them are less than 24 episodes. Most of them are around 36 or 40. What sets this one apart is in most dramas around the midway point or 2/3 through you end up skipping or fast forwarding through episodes just to get to the end. That does not happen in this show. Every episode was a no skip episode.

judecarden supremacist

thank you for reacting to poj! it was also my gateway to all cdrama and i loved your reaction to it. it made me get the patreon and I'm so excited for more cdrama to come. like you said this drama was just so well rounded, in my opinion great rewatch-ability for just any episode. LOVED xie zheng and fan changyu. and i totally understand what you mean by qianqian and qi mins chemistry. i tell you everyone I've encountered who watched poj had complicated feeling abt their relationship. they're just so good together ya know. the fandom is so desperate to see them get a happy ending in another drama as main lead but alas nothing yet. the casting was ao great for this. the actors did an amazing job. when getting into cdrama just in march/april i watched poj as it was releasing and was like oh no i started from peak now I'm going to compare everything. and poj has been peak after watching many many more cdrama modern and wuxia/xianxia both nothing has beaten poj for me but some came really close in its story telling. cdrama has become my constant now bc of the storytelling and just in general so many enjoyable elements. I'm sorry i wont have non-romance recs for you bc im a major romance watcher lol. i mean i do love a solid plot to go with it like poj but i need me some romance in it too. i loved watching fated hearts, generation to generation, hidden love, first frost, the best thing, love in the clouds, veil of shadows (cinematic masterpiece), blossom (from same director as poj), story of kunning palace. another popular recommendation is legend of female general but idk that just didnt click with me and i had to drop it

Mad Hatter

Oh, another note worthy series! *fangs of fortune* As i mentioned before that the mysterious lotus casebook is more queer subtext with found family in the martial arts world plotline, this series is similar. It only gives romance like 10% of the entire show too and is more about solving mysteries, cool fighting scenes, humour and found family ties. But the difference is that where Mysterious Lotus Casebook is a martial arts, detective series without much fantasy (as martial arts arent considered a fantasy/magic genre, but a fighting sort of genre), Fangs of Fortune is more “xianxia” + “wuxia” a love child. Xianxia refers to folklore and other chinese mythology based stories. For context, China doesnt use the term magic and tends to ground its fantasy stories in folklore.

Layla Hassani

I recommend The Legend of Zhang Hai, which is a revenge drama with a male protagonist. I really like this one

Xuan Le

Ashes of love is GOAT tho lol

Djahmine H-R

Yeah I get that, but I do think he deserves to be punished, whatever his reasons were.

Djahmine H-R

Yeah I get that, you need a lot of subscriptions to watch Cdrama alas…..

Djahmine H-R

The First Jasmine was sooooo good! I loved the actors, obviously, Cheng Lei and Bai Lu. But what I really enjoyed was the plot! Felt very new and got me hooked right away. I saw a lot of people say it wasn’t their cup of tea and that it was too slow, but honestly, I didn’t get bored once

Djahmine H-R

I always crave for more after in Cdrama. But since I read the novel after, even the what is sooo short! We don’t see much of their relationship in this parallel reality. But yeah, the after would have been nice. They have twins and adopt all the orphan kids of the men in their army. I also liked that they didn’t actually go back to Lin’an too, because it makes more sense. But the reunion in Lin’an was a nice ending for the show.

Mimi

Thank you so much for taking us along on this journey! I really enjoyed watching your reactions to this drama. Woohoo! 🎉 If you’re looking for a non-romance show next, may I suggest Born with Luck? It’s a dark comedy police procedural with zero romance, but it’s absolutely hilarious. It’s adapted from a novel by a well-known crime writer, and it’s both highly rated and brilliantly directed. The way the story gradually pieces together this intricate labyrinth of a mystery is so satisfying. I’m not sure if it’s on Netflix, but it’s definitely available on iQIYI with English subtitles.

Emma Kehoe

Great reaction! I'm really impressed that you remembered so many names, connections and even some chinese traditions because it took me a while at least with the names and connections and I had watched dosens of C-dramas before this haha. For a non-romance I definitely recomment The Untamed which is also exremely popular and gives you a look into a different genre as well. It's one of my personal favourites. The Double is another great one to consider - it does have romance but I would say it's secondary in comparison to the main story. Also Corone's Diary, which I've seen recommended in the comments here, even though the romance is more in the forefront compared to The Double it's a great detective story. In any case I look forward to the next C-drama reaction after POB!!

Flickerjax

To mix it up from romance: I recommend Fangs of Fortune, very light romance, very epic fantasy/mystery. Or Under the Skin is a very good option as well. It's a modern day police procedural, with faint elements of magical realism. It's very well done with some interesting mysteries.

Flickerjax

Also I see people recommending Nirvana in Fire, which is the best cdrama there is, but it's so good and so complex and so well done story-wise that it will ruin you for all other cdramas for a bit after watching it. 😅

CA

I am only on episode 2 of The First Jasmine and I'm hooked. It would be a good choice for the next cdrama reactions.

ChanceReading

My recommendation is The Blood of Youth. There is romance but it is not the purpose of the show it is more about friends. Also the guy who played Qi Min(Deng Kai) is in it as well.

Dana

Story of Yanxi Palace because there are so few Qing Dynasty dramas and Wu Jinyan is one of the best actresses of her era and her character is arguably the strongest in costume dramas.

Peppermint

One I think you'd enjoy that would be different would be Reunion: Sound of the Providence (2020); it's got mystery, suspense, and comedy in it, and a good plot.

JAZ

NEXT CDRAMA PLEASE WATCH Blossoms of Power 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 PLEASE WATCH IT PLEASE 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 I'M REALLY HAPPY YOU FINISHED WATCHING PURSUIT OF JADE🙏🏻

Nikki

I'm more of a kdrama fan and although POJ was not my first cdrama, it definitely was the first cdrama I have ever finished and not just finished slowly but I gobbled the 40 episodes in 4 days. I just couldn't stop watching it. Every episode just pulled me harder into the story. As repeatedly say, watching this show didn't feel like I was watching a drama, it felt like I was actually living in it along with the characters. I'm very nitpicky when watching dramas because I have no patience. I don't like long series that is probably why I dropped a lot of cdramas before and after POJ even the highly recommended ones. For me to watch everything, I need to have very strong emotional connection to the story and to the characters. POJ just did all of that and even made me wish it was longer than 40 eps. Heck they could make a hundred more episodes and I will still watch it. That's just how good this show is. The acting, the production, the cinematography, the visuals, the epic lines, it's just so perfect. Just kudos to the actors, every single one of them, Tian Xiwei and Zhang Linghe (my forever fave couple) Director Zeng (my goat) and the rest of the production team. I rated this show 10 while having this feeling that the ending was rushed because I wanted more action from the Marquis, but I understand that because of the censorship they couldn't have beyond 40 episodes. Just imagine if there was no censorship what my rating would be. That is probably why after watching POJ, I'm just left with this empty feeling and no show has been able to fill it up. I did enjoy and finish other cdramas after POJ but I couldn't help and rewatch this show all over again. Now I watch reaction channels so that I could re-experience watching the show all over again with other people. What I'm saying is POJ fcked my brain basically. The dopamine I got was so high like I got drugged and now I can't find the fix I need. I will probably suffer for a year or several years Idk lmao but I have yet to find another show like this in a while. That said, I really enjoyed your reaction and thank you so much for sharing your reaction to us. This way I was able to enjoy my favorite show all over again.
