Peak has arrived !!!

I don't think this show is so much about what you understand that about what you feel

Also, a second season has been officially announced. ^^

and yes, the rewatch helps a lot !!

My interpretation of the last episode is that in place of going back in time to save his friend and let regret overcome him, he saved Yi who was in front of him and wanted to live to find the things that shine

This project is co-produced by two indie studios. FlintSugar won the Lightcatchers program with the pilot of False Memory and got funding from Bilibili in 2020. Later StudioTumble came helped but the production time also became longer. They might want to convey as much narrative while fulfilling their visions on a budget, so the story is packed into 7 episodes with little room to slow down. It's totally okay to feel puzzled when the series is this packed on weekly watches.

I love your interpretation of the show, honestly i have rewatched it since it finished and yes absolutely, rewatching it really helps put things into perspective. I heard someone say if FLCL was an exploration of life when transitioning from childhood to adulthood False memory is what it’s like to be crushed by the expectation and stress of reality. First of all, the whole season was an exploration of Guan Chao’s grief and Truama, basically the first couple seconds of the show literally tell you that he died, and later on Fang Tang told him the same thing at the end of ep1, in episode 3 they literally showed how he died by slipping and hitting his head on a safe. And remember Bugs are created by the Bug source trauma, and can manifest in reality, in other words the Time gun bug manifested at the moment he was going to die and rewrote reality of the town to keep him alive, essentially merging his final memory layer to the town. Basically the Time gun doesn’t actually exist and therefore cannot rewind time in order to save his friend, it can only take him to any point in his life, so he broke the illusion and destroyed the time gun, used the halo he got from Ran Dang to save Yi which then erased him from reality. Finally, remember the stick that was given to him in episode 3 and which He Ming Sho used to fight the hallow bug being, that’s a memory object, which are objects that appear in the sea of bitterness because someone refuses to forget them even though they no longer exist in reality. Guan Chou basically became a humanoid memory object just like the stick and I am guessing that’s how most if not all collectors became collectors. Your analysis is not off, at the end of the day, even though there are details you did not catch because it’s only the first watch through, you caught most of the big important pieces, after all it’s a very dense show.

From my understanding, Guan Chao was already dead like Fang Tang said in ep 1 when he came to the memory place. 28:45 was his actual flashback. The moment he died was 34:22 where he banged his head against the desk which happens in the start of episode 3 but in that ep he gets back up and throws the trash and finds the time gun with the burning stone already there which wasn’t real. K7 never created the time gun, it was something that he planned to do in the newspaper but couldn’t do it but since Guan Chao saw it in the newspaper and he created a bug being which was the time gun because of all his regrets. Guan chao taking the cloth off the bus during the end was “closing/pulling the curtains” off a delusion to go back in time and fix things. Essentially to accept what happened without turning a blind eye and pushing it away from your memory. Memories are unique to each other, the smell, the touch, the look will never be the same as another and that is why it has so much value as He Ming says which Guan Chao didn’t understand as a kid, even as an adult. Thus Guan Chao now becomes a full fledged collector and next story will probably be the vindicator at the end of the universe finding a set of windows - future content hopefully. The painting in Guan Chao’s room was Yi’s painting as she said in this ep that whatever drawn is almost like it’s preserved forever.

In this sense the show is very condensed for what it wants to say and how it did in only 7 episodes. Others feels like it should’ve given more light to the other characters but it’s Guan Chao’s story with set up for those characters here for future content (is what I hope lol).

Thank you for finishing this show! I love this so much... It hides so many hints that were weird on first watch but so telling when you know the context.
