as a kid, situ ling doesn't know ming xian's face because ming xian always wears a mask to fight. he only realised that the 'older brother' he was talking to was mingxian, when he sees the arm band he gave to the older brother, on mingxian's arm in the tournament. Adult situ ling recognises ming yi as mingxian, due to their fighting style such as the bow and arrow scene from last episode. hence, that's how he realised mingxian is a female. i think you're assuming that there's a loophole, regarding the gender changing mask ming yi had on as a kid. that spell is always there, so therefore, the whole time within mingyi's childhood, everybody sees her as a male 'mingxian'. its not really a 'physical' mask you can put on or off.
