I lucked out that my dad never lost his job, and we lived within our means on a loan in a duplex when the 2008 update dropped. AFAIK 2008 didn't affect loans as long as you didn't get the yeet from your job & could afford to pay on the loan as usual. It also did help that my grandparents had paid off the loan on their house almost a decade before then, so worst-case they would have supported us since the largest expense of housing is GG no re by that point for them.
