I’ve been waiting for this all week!

mksza

phillip “admitted” to the satos (hideo and his dad) in episode 3 that he was having an “affair” with sohee. this basically explained to them why he lets her stay in his house as a maid, and why he was now recommending her as someone who happened to be a perfect fit for the needed interpreter position at their office. since the satos now believes that phillip and sohee are having an affair, they don’t suspect anything and just easily accepted sohee for the position at the office. that’s also why hideo said, “don’t let phillip know that you like me, if you were telling the truth yesterday,” because he thinks phillip is abusive towards sohee and assumes he’s the one responsible for her injuries and bruises.

The elevator scene says so much about Hideo. The way he tells Seo Hee that he doesn’t use the elevator not because he isn’t allowed to, but because he chooses not to, hits differently after he reveals that she isn’t allowed to use it because she’s Joseon. He has the privilege to use it because of his position and who his father is, yet he chooses not to, because he knows exactly why Seo Hee is denied that same privilege. If his own people are being excluded simply for being Joseon, then he refuses to benefit from that privilege on principle. He’s a man caught between two worlds, privileged enough to belong to one, yet deeply aware that the other is his too. I love how subtly this show portrays his internal conflict without having to spell out every emotion. 🥹
