Everfalling

I'm wondering if slipping allows the domino to fall a little further before hitting the next domino and thus gains a small gravity assist as opposed to just tipping over in place. like when a domino tips over without slipping then the top of the domino hits the next one higher up. when the domino slips it hits the next one further down. i think that small difference in where it hits and how much kinetic energy it has to impart by the time it hits might make a difference.

Jon Davis (Joshua Alexander)

I think it's actually cooler that you got stumped this time. The fact that there is so much physics in that little toy is the coolest thing ever.

Rickard Dahlstrand

A Lego pendulum should work for starting the motion using the same force every time.

Hi Destin It's so nice that you made a video on this subject for their hobby and event, I am sure they were like WOW, Destin is here ! I am also so proud of you for doing this test for those kids them to see and or prove a point, whether the color ones fall faster or not, and prove if what the European say about different colors falling faster or not. If anyone can answer this, it would be you Destin :) This is what I love about you, either proving a point or at lease finding the answer. I hope you make a follow up video on this. Thank you for sharing and all your work in making these videos xo

Daniel Ryan

I had this thought as well. Simple pendulum design that is raised to the same height to start. Easiest and simplest solution in my mind.

Stu

I like the pendulum idea too. You could perhaps modify one of those little desktop Newton's cradles, remove all but one ball and use an electromagnet to hold the ball which is then released by a switch. Another advantage here is that you already have a handy frame to hold everything. You could perhaps modify a cheap solenoid to act as the electromagnet.

Invisible Jazz

To test I'd suggest you need a long enough line that full speed is reached and acceleration has stopped before it gets to the spot you are filming. Because of this the trigger mechanism shouldn't matter as it would be a good few seconds earlier - but to be consistent you could just use any mechanical moving objects to knock the 1st one as it turns/spins/passes

Phil Moyer

Dude! I was like, "yeah, ok, dominoes, that'll be kinda interesting," but then you started analyzing the fall rate and suddenly it was amazing! Great work! Oh, and I like the pendulum idea, too, but to make it really consistent it should be like the sheer force pendulum they use in materials engineering. It shouldn't have a flexible arm, it should be solid (like a swinging hammer), with a stop so you raise it to exactly the same place every time (and, thus, impart the same force every time.)

Peter J. Mello

That was my thought as well. I've never taken apart a metronome, but I wonder if the housing couldn't be removed from the underlying mechanism to allow it to act as the primer, since it already offers the ability to set various speeds that will reliably duplicate.

Rickard Dahlstrand

After thinking a few hours more on the problem it might not be this easy. The force will be the same, but the weight of the brick will result in different results. I thing a much longer row of bricks is the solution. The speed should stabilize and cancel out any variation in the start.

For consistency, the longer set of dominos seems like the best solution, but that doesn't help measure the acceleration, which might be interesting. Of the other ideas, Stu's electromagnet seems to be the most likely to result in a consistent, repeatable experiment

Jeff Dzado

Late to the party.... Use some sort of motor with a nodule or cam on it. Have the motor spin at a consistent rate, and use that to knock over the first one. Use a very consistent power supply (not battery) so motor characteristics are really consistent over time. This will cause the same force to be applied.

Tom Herbert

One more late to the party. This looks a really cool twist on the classic slip-or-tip problem - thanks for doing this! The way I see it, the moment of inertia is much greater about the bottom edge than the center of mass. For the dominoes that slip rather than tip, lower rotational inertia means greater rotational acceleration. If you're not already up to your eyeballs in parametric combinations, try varying the spacing of the dominoes. Because the spacing affects the point of contact, you can trade off between tendency to rotate and tendency to translate. You might be able to demonstrate that the spacing effects whether it slips or tips.
