Ok... this video was incredibly awesome to make. I first saw Jerobeam's music about a year ago and started trying to figure out how to make it over to him.  Thank you for supporting via Patreon and allowing me to not feel guilty about a flight to do this!!  Anyways, many conversations with Hansi opened my mind to the concept of Parametric Equations all around me in the natural world.  I'm going to look into this in the future.

I hope you enjoy this half as much as I enjoyed making it!

Drawing with Sound (Oscilloscope Music) - Smarter Every Day 224

I now sometimes think about the outline of physical objects as if it's a line. The specific area of math that you use for things like this is called "Parametric Equations". I had a lot of great conversations about this stuff with Hansi and Jerobeam. I was very impressed by their intelligence, and also very thankful that they took their time to share these special things with me. I know they'd really appreciate it if you'd reach out to their website and purchase OsciStudio as well as some of Jerobeam's music. Even if you don't have an oscilloscope, purchasing the software will obviously help them continue to do what they love doing. Hansi showed me a very interesting thing he's working on involving ray tracing. It was fascinating. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SUPPORT THE ARTISTS! The Sin/Cosine demonstration is AWESOME just from an educational standpoint!

Nebbstar

My first contribution! I like it :-)

Little Yako

Amazing! One of my favorite Smarter Every Day videos recently.

Steven Cale

My mind literally could not take in all of the data trying to correlate things. such a beautiful mesh of math, music, and art. And the nerd in my made the exact same audible reaction as Destin when he did the sin/cos demonstration. Thanks for sharing!

Paul Dickerson

Showed to my synesthete wife, she says it was uncomfortable...but very cool.

Koleopteros

This is probably one of the more weirder yet interesting videos. Still though, can't beat the poop splash video.

Kristy

Engineering EDM party! Very very coo video, though a little heavy on the Casper promo.

Destin, you have really over-delivered here, or I have under-contributed. I can (and did) fix that. This is content I love paying for. Thank you!

Tim and Chrissy G

So, I’m thinking the afterglow of a CRT scope is required for this to work? Can it be done on a digital scope at all?

Derek Kind

WHAAAAAAAAAT. I love stuff like this that comes out of left field to blow my mind. Thank you, sir!

Austin Burnham

Okay that was really neat. I used analog o-scopes in college, but never knew you could do this with them! I thought I knew what this video would be before I watched it, but the shapes they generated blew my mind, and they even sounded like music! I'm glad you discovered them and made this video.

Joseph Murphy

This was absolutely top notch. So proud to be a backer that when I sent this to my friends I mentioned as much. I don't think I'll be over this concept/implementation for a while. Incredible find.

Andrew Phillips

This has to be the best music I've ever seen. Thrilled to be a part of this!

Stephanie

Wow, that was a fun watch! Thanks Destin!

Eike Bartels

It is incredible what creative minds can come up with.
