Does anyone know MatLab really well? (and have time to help me this afternoon?) (Patreon)

I have an assignment that requires MatLab... something I don't know.  The professor said I can work with others to figure it out.  Is there anyone out there that's an absolute NINJA with MatLab?  I could use some help.  I can see it taking 2 hours or so.

Regards,Destin

There are different parts of Matlab. What generally are you needing to do?

Chad Eichhorn

I've got a few thousand hours of Matlab experience, but Jeff is right, there's lots of different parts and I don't know them all

Cal Stroupe

Im sort of busy tonight, but I will be more than willing to help if nobody else is available. The other people are right. If it's general Matlab code, it should be fairly straightforward. But if it's use of a specific library, it may be more of a challenge to help with.

Conner Hoagland

MATLAB was the sole code/calculating program I used in college and I feel confident with it, but like above there's so much you can use it for it kinda depends on what you need.

Andrius Raulinaitis

I'm in the same boat as the others here. I have a lot of MATLAB experience but it might not necessarily be in the parts you need. I will be available tonight starting at 4:30pm (PST)

I have to create a 3D surface based on several multidimensional equations. THEN I have to plot it on a log-log plot. He gave us some code to start with but if you're trying to understand simple things like how to plot... well... you understand.

Hey Destin ! MatLab is a fun tool :) (I agree with Jeff and Chad, and I don't claim to know everything either, but more ideas = better models :) ) and would be willing to help you brainstorm an assignment tonight, I can make myself available from 6-8 CST on 2019-11-12, if you want to Google Hangout.

Jeff Dzado

I'm sure there are many here that can help. I did lots of 2D and 3D plots when I was working with aircraft controls, but it has been a few years. Let me know if no one else is able to help you confidently. I'm a software engineer, so I understand lots of these things quickly :)

Matthew Kurtz

Hey Destin, I am have a lot of experience with MATLAB and programming in general but I have the same concerns as the others. That the assignment requires specific knowledge of a library or toolbox. I work from home and can be available anytime this afternoon. Is there any way you can share the assignment and starting code now so I can say for sure if it's something I can help with?

Kevin Iga

Are these equations giving the surface implicitly (like x^2+y^3+z^5=x^5+y+z) or parametrically (like x=u*v, y=u^2-v^2, z=u^2+v^2)?

Stefan Schloesser

Hi Destin, another one with many hours of Matlab Experience, this time from Germany, so depending on your typical work hours this can be an advantage or disadvantage. :-) I am 7h ahead of you. My typical spare time window would be from 2pm-6pm your time.

Murray Foster

Sounds like it might help if you posted the code. Then everyone can see what you’re dealing with.

Dean Kyfiuk

Hi Destin, I'm in a similar position to those above though my experience lands in the hundreds of hours, not thousands. I feel we may be approaching "too many cooks in the kitchen," but if you host a Google hangout or livestream I'd be willing to listen in and offer advice if appropriate.

Mark Tea

Oh wow! I haven't used matlab in like 15 years! Good luck!

Kyle Mentink

I'm survivable with MATLAB - but pretty good at figuring out how to get the right info. Any other details you can share on what you're trying to do?

Alexander Sheard

Seems like you have plenty of help already! For what it's worth, I'm a undergraduate mechanical/design engineer with 2+ years of MATLAB experience. Again, like people have mentioned, MATLAB is vast, so it's highly likely I may not have covered some of the stuff you are doing. I'm UK-based if that helps with timings. Feel free to drop me a message if you have any questions! Alex (Edit: I'm sure a smart guy like you has already found these, but the documentation for MATLAB is excellent and very user-friendly https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/)

Brendan J Scully

I'm not a MATLAB wizard, but a close friend of mine is and would be more than happy to help. Let me know and I can connect you both.

Quester

I'm also pretty MATLAB savvy, but like others have stated, it would be helpful to see what kind of a problem is being asked and then I'm sure you'll have lots of suggested solutions!

Jack & Robin Mooney

Looks like you've got a bunch of positive responses already, but I'm happy to help (and am on the west coast so if you're up really late I'll probably still be awake)

Christopher Creutzig

Just to keep fillng the list - I'd be happy to help, from Germany. Writing and improving MATLAB code is a pretty big part of my day-to-day work.

smartereveryday

This might happen. I'm excited to see so many people who support Smarter Every Day are MatLab ninjas!

Manu Madhav

Same here. Scientist, use MATLAB almost every day. ~15 years experience.

Hagai

Given the time, the amount of responses you recieved, and the fact i'm going to sleep soon it's definitely not relevant, but another well versed MATLAB-er here!

Hagai

and even did a course on 3D graphics using MATLAB! (final project was coding a 3D version of wall breaker, complete with several camera options and dynamic lighting)

inchristalone911

You can also see the help for basic surface plots by doing "help surf"

Frans Wilbrink

Maybe a colab opportunity with Matt Parker?

Adrian Levi

remember that time that 7M subscribers came together to solve a problem?

Justin Pearson

I'm happy to help! I used Matlab in school as a mechanical engineer, then for 4 years at aerospace company, then for 4 years in grad school for electrical engineering. Let me know -- I like teaching and helping folks!! :)

Daniel T Watanabe

Sorry, I'm a bit late for the party, but if you you're still looking for help I've been using Matlab for a while in school for Control Engineering during my undergrad, and now for Astro Engineering. I'm pretty experienced with the simulink plugin if that happens to be what you're looking for!

Paul Smith

More than happy to help 😁
