Hey there!  Thanks for sticking with me as a Patron! I want to make it worth your time, so please enjoy this ABSOLUTELY GIGANTIC download of SlowMo Pecan shaking footage.  Believe it or not, it took over 2 weeks to process this footage.  I'd love to know what you see in the footage!  I can't say I've been through every single second of it yet myself!  4 hours is a ton of stuff!

On one close-up shot (I can't remember which one) I saw a bug fly out of a limb when it shook.  This stuff is so fun to think about!

Here's the link to the whole folder:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/12fkYd_cdPB6xEz58r6iIziSB3y4VhbG9?usp=sharing

Files Descriptions:

F1: Wide View of an entire pecan tree during a shake.  It's an incredibly complicated and chaotic mechanical system.  Notice how the limbs lift after pecans drop.

F2: A tight view of the limbs in the top of an "unshaken" tree.  Tree vibrator was positioned at 0 degrees.

F3: A tight view of the limbs in the top of the same tree after the first shake.  Tree vibrator was positioned at 90 degrees.

F4: Wide view of trunk deflection

F5: Tight view of trunk deflection with tape measure

F6: Tight view of a tri-cluster which didn't turn loose of the pecans.

F7: Tight view of a single pecan which broke free.

F8: Top-Down wide view watching pecans falling away.

F9: Beauty shot of the entire system. It's possible to measure delay trunk to pecan

F10: Up-looking shot of raining pecans.

For some reason Elvis I'm all shook up is playing in my mind while watching this

Brandizzle

This was a very cool thing to do. Looking forward to more things like it in the future. Should it ever happen again. Because we're under-promising and over-delivering.

Addison Gilbert

Hey I really love your videos! My wife and I watch them as soon as they come up. We got the baseball and immediately wanted to get a show box for it so we can put it up for our friends to see. Keep doing whatever you love and we will always enjoy. Ps I also listen to the podcast while I run and need to really catch up to the most recent episodes, you guys are awesome!

Pierre Martel

OK! I can foresee a google drive overload in the next 10 minute!!!

Sean Farley

Fantastic. Good idea Destin. Thanks for this.

Russell Harris

Thanks mate from Australia, appreciate the effort, and love your vids.

Katya Gilley

I look forward to watching all of these, also, thank you for the signed baseball my family was ecstatic! My 5 yr old more so then expected, she wanted to throw it against her wall to see it explode!!!

Aaron Williams

I haven't gotten the baseball, but it was the reason I signed up to be a patron...

Zach Wiggin

Not the same without A Shell in the Pit's sound design!

James Heuberger

Destin, thanks for gigantic slow mo files. That's just the best. It's wow! It's like being in the edit booth with you. Thanks for letting us in to see this kinda stuff :)

J. C.

I love all the things you've done since the first ones I found. When I "joined" several years ago, you were mentioning earning funds to put aside for your kids' college(s). So I hope, as a former science teacher, that those funds are still building up. Keep up the good work. Whenever I run into a science-lover student I recommend that another patron for SED has been added.

Cory Faris

I'm in a similar boat. I sponsored for years and left to support others this year. Came back in hopes of getting a baseball the day it was announced. No luck yet.

Thirsten

LOVE this. Extras like these files are amazing. So cool.

Scilabus

Thank you Destin!

Jan Sterba

I did not get my baseball yet! what's up with that?

JonaR

Thank you

FFdar911

I did not either 😕

KC

Love what you do, Destin. Happy holidays to you and your family.

Bradf de laine

Have your family overdosed on Pecans yet?

Terry Moore

The only thing I thought was missing in the Pecan harvest video was a slow motion of pecans coming out and wished there had been MORE of the slow mo shaking. You have made my day and granted my wish, Destin! Thank YOU!

Chubby

I want to say thank you for the baseball, but that's not why I wanted to support Smarter Everyday. I enjoy the content you put out, and my kids love watching your videos too! Thank you for everything you do.

smartereveryday

Oh no! That sounds like an address issue. Let me see if I can figure it out. Please message us on the patreon message system and we will figure it out!

smartereveryday

Can you please message me directly? This sounds like an address issue.

David Goodridge

I’m interested in knowing how this affects the tree in general. Does it loosen the root system? Does it or has it ever broken a tree?

Sean Farley

This is totally something you need to sell to media companies that play video in doctor's waiting rooms (or the like). ---PS: thanks for the baseball!

Kevin Albers

I'm getting a 404 on the Dropbox link. I'm really looking forward to watching some of that footage!

TwistedSync

I'm getting a 404 error on the dropbox link as well. Hope you can get it figured out !

Felix Wong

Yeah same here. 404 as well.

Jim Wreyford

Get link does not exist message.

Stefan Bruhn

Also getting DropBox 404 error

Aaron Latham

Thanks so much for this Destin, I am looking forward to checking it all out when the link is working. I was really really hoping to get to see some sexy SlowMo action of the rotary cracker in action! I am assuming you have a perfectly valid reason for not capturing this, but it would have been totally awesome to see (partly because it would have been great to see your reaction to it). Thanks again for everything you do. I know my kids get super excited when you release a new video.

Felix Wong

Thank you so much Destin!

Buck Jolicoeur

You do you! Just have some fun making videos you think are cool. Enjoy it. That will make me happy. You inspire me and my son to just explore our curiosity for "shits & giggles".

Buck Jolicoeur

Follow Up comment. That's some wild footage that makes me wonder if there's an optimal frequency for shaking trees; and if that frequency is relative to the trunk diameter.

Steven D Spencer

Comments higher up have a Google drive link. Cheers

Damien Mottet

Hi it's me Damien 🙃. For me you don't have to post anything for me as patreo. I just love to be able to support the channel, you, your family and the jiggly shitty content you produce! Thank you for the good wibes!

Jason Kirby

Does this mean all the baseballs have been sent out now? I wasn’t early enough for the signed one but I was really hoping I got here in time for the later ones.

V.E. Griffith

Tried to dump it all onto my own Google drive and it filled it up and (temporarily) hosed my Gmail. Yay! Oh well, I guess I'll have to download it the painful way. :)

Hagai

This definitely "over delivers"! Thanks Destin!

Digital Gorilla

Or tree type, is it resonance? Wood... it change between, say an oak and a pine?

Albert Los

same here, but live in Belgium.. probably takes some time to get it to europe. @destin, awesome footage btw!

Fred F

Thanks. Very cool.

smartereveryday

Sorry you haven't received yours yet! Please send us a direct message on patreon or an email to patrons@smartereveryday.com and we will check on it for you!

Just FYI.... I have seen cherries and plums harvested in much the same way here in Oregon. Special methods are devised (stretched tarps) to catch the fruit as it fall in an effort to reduce bruising.

Manic

Looks like the google drive share has maxed out the download quota, we can't access most of the individual files any more :(

Buck Jolicoeur

Yes, except this is footage of shaking pecan's loose from pecan trees. So, generally it would be the same density. Only the diameter of the trunk, and the fulness of the tree tops would be the alternating variable.

Alain Keusen

Me neither. But hey, that's not why I am here ;-) Destin, you can give mine to Fernando, in case you have not sent the baseball yet. Cheers from Switzerland! btw: download still in progress...

Arthur Costerus

Destin, if you were to start making shitty videos, I still watch and be a patreon... I only wish my kids were old enough to understand english so they can get smarter every day... and please,.... it is not pronounced "p'can", it is peeeecaan... ;-)

Travis Boop

In the second and third video showing the tree tops: If you watch the clusters that do not shake free, those branches do not seem to oscillate. It seems like the shaking/oscillation is 'filtered' out because I assume based on how the tree grew. I would be curious if revving up and down the RPMs on the tractor to change the frequency of vibration could 'free' more nuts. Also is there a secondary benefit to leaving pecans on the tree?

Shawn dinterman

Don't stress on making me happy, I support the science you try to teach this generation. Not for extra content or perks. Thats just my reasoning behind it. I've never been a pateron for any other channel or really plan to be at this moment.

Nolan Rice

I just received the baseball today. Super stoked. My good friend is an astrophysicist and lives in Huntsville. He has sent me Trash Panda sweatshirts. The baseball is awesome! Love your videos and I'm happy to support Smarter Every Day!

Manic

Yeah, got them now, looks like the quota was exceeded in the initial rush but has reset since then, thanks.

Rick Smith

Got the baseball!! Didn't expect it.. Glad to support you buddy!

Dungerdore

It was so great getting the baseball, thank you! Was not expecting it but such a cool thing to have. Always excited to partner with you!

Eddie Brannon

Loved The Baseball, Love the videos
