I recorded this back in 2016 and 2017, but it's taken a while to get some of the footage approved for release.  I hope you enjoy the video!  Thank you so much for your support!!

Loved your conversation with Dr. Mather. He's obviously such a humble, unassuming man, who has a gift for explaining things simply and clearly. I'm so excited for this series.

Dr. Mather really can explain something as complicated as redshift. I always knew that it existed and kinda understood how it worked, but his explanation and your drawing really made it easy to understand. Thank you for your work, Destin. Great video. I am glad to support you! Can't wait for the series.

Judith Goike

This is mind blowing! (Tried to think of an intelligent “sounding” description but this is it!) thanks Destin and Dr. Mather! Looking forward to December 21st!!! What an event THAT will be: insterstellar!

Steven Cale

Fantastic video! Great to see Destin and Dr. Mather talking about James Webb at Goddard! Unfortunately, John glazed over the entire cooling system the the Cryogenics branch I work in created, but it was still great to see Goddard in one of SED's videos! Not worried but excited for launch in December!

Joe McCormack

Absolutely amazing video. Also, a bit of humor to be found in your only camera overheating while he's actively talking about contingencies and back up plans and secondary hardware.

William Strickland

I’ve always referred to that nugget of wisdom at the end as your circle of concern and your circle of control.

Blair Sturm

Thanks for another great video that sparks the 12 year old curiosity in a 36 year old man. One question though…. How do you launch something to 4x the distance of the moon and somehow get it to orbit a “spot” out there without a gravitation well? It seems like the energy to get it out there would be extremely difficult to reduce. Upcoming video on orbital mechanics?!?

Chris Nolan.ca

5 years for rights clearance!? whoa. Bureaucracy at it's best I guess?

Steve Jones

What an amazing video! I can't wait to see the rest! I have lived nearby to Goddard for almost my whole life and watched the first space shuttle launch from there with my dad when I was a kid, and even launched model rockets at their facility in the Estes model rocket club they sponsor(ed) back in the late 70s, but I have never seen inside any of the buildings other than the visitors center. This was a fantastic opportunity! Dr Mather is great and I agree that the wisdom of not worrying about things you can't control is awesome. One thing I would love to hear about is HOW do they establish an orbit around an arbitrary point beyond the moon? There's no object providing gravitational pull at the center of their orbit. Unless I'm missing something, it must not be an "orbit" in the traditional sense, but more of a powered course?? Please explain more! I know I must be missing something because I can't imagine that craft can carry enough fuel to sustain that the way I am imagining it!!

Michal Thompson

Omg!!! Amazing video. I am so excited for future videos and the launch in December!

Michael Coolidge

What cracked me up was your camera overheating. That is a common problem in space. I have not seen it nearly as common on earth…but I guess it is. Great interview.

Patrick Roehrman

Really enjoyed the video, the red shit is interesting. Red is really a matter of perspective 😂

Gary Huntress

Every part of the JWT is fascinating to me. I hope you do many more on it. I'm really excited because I know every time a major telescope has been made, we've learned something radically new about our place in the universe. When my grandfather was born, we didn't know galaxies existed, when my father was born Fritz Zwicky had just started talking about dark matter. I was born just when Penzias and Wilson discovered the CMBR. My kids were born as we discovered extrasolar planets and dark energy. Just the span of a few generations in a cosmic blink.

Janet Traweek

I really loved the "chalkboard" style animations and graphics in this video, they were definitely helpful for understanding. I'm super excited now about this telescope I had never heard of and the info it may bring to us. Thanks for covering this, Destin!

Andy D

Beautiful nugget of wisdom, Destin. So awesome that you captured that here to share with the world.

Alec Richter

Matthew 6:34 goes amazingly with how you and Dr. Mather ended the video, thank you for that!

Barron B

So I kept meaning to swing through the comments somewhere and mention this. That nugget of wisdom strongly reminds me of the serenity prayer. It shifts a little in this case because early on and during development we do all we can. But there reaches a point where it leaves our control and there is nothing else to be done. Awesome video nonetheless.

J Corp

I really liked understanding the JWST. Exciting!

The Bosco

Make the best plan you can with the information available, execute the plan, then let go. Yeah. That seems like pretty solid wisdom applicable to every aspect of life. Thank you, Dr. Mather and Destin.

Paul McCartney

I really enjoyed this one. Thank you for the interview!
