Thank you for supporting Smarter Every Day.  By doing so you are directly supporting DATA TIME! I thought the silly putty was very interesting because it kind of shattered, almost like glass.... but it still stretched in some places.  Quite bizarre.  The gong of course was  super interesting as well.

How on earth do you make a title and thumbnail for a video like this?  I was most excited about the results of the mirror shot, but that gong shot was pretty amazing as well!

Obviously none of this would happen without your continued support!  I REALLY want to tell you about the interesting experiment I have planned for the baseball cannon, but alas, it must remain on the down low until I can actually make it work.  I've already tried once, but failed.  Thanks again!

Warm Regards,

Destin

You should shoot a ballistic dummy labs torso!!

Evan Lachmanec

Did anyone else notice the mirror move BEFORE impact??

Nicholas Dowler

The MythBusters found how many pizza boxes it would take to stop a bullet... I would love to see a line of 40 something pizzas still stand no chance.

Craig Hall

Great video! So what is the ballistic coefficient if the baseball at Mach 1.5ish? I need that to determine my baseball drop at 1 mile. 🤔

Larry J Seltzer

What a mess! Do you guys vacuum the field when you're done?

Larry J Seltzer

I was struck by how the gong didn't move as the baseball blew a hole through it.

Dale

That mirror shot is amazing.

Dale

Now that you've got the accuracy sorted, I wonder how the baseball would fare against a sword or knife. Potential for some very dangerous flying debris there though.

Erin

I haven't checked the other posts to see if this was already suggested, but Garandthumb did a video with the ballistic gel heads from https://ballisticdummylab.com/ that was in an uncanny valley between horrifying and hilarious. I think a supersonic baseball into one of those would be deeply moving. Expensive though!

JW King

I was wondering what the shock wave looks like coming out of the cannon. Then I wondered how it would change if the cannon was dry-fired (no baseball). Then I thought, they should try using a wiffle ball instead of a basball. I don't think it would survive to reach the muzzle, but if it did, it would help you characterize the cannon, since it should accelerate almost as fast as the air behind it, whereas the baseball has significant inertia. You might need someone to make a carbon-fiber wiffle ball.

Andrew Tumang

Not too sure if anyone has suggested this yet but in case you need any more suggestions of what to shoot at: have you considered a bottle full of live savers? Considering all those sprinkles got demolished I would love to see the same happen to life savers but with triboluminescence!

Derek Scollon

Something I wondered about... Is the velocity just a function of the pressure difference between the high pressure of the tank and the low pressure of the barrel vacuum? Or is it a little more complex than this? If there's a vacuum in the barrel, you might expect a simple (?linear) relationship between pressure and velocity. But air in the barrel can't easily move out of the way of the baseball, it will compress as the baseball moves along the barrel. More complex maths than I'm capable of, but possible a factor in why the lack of vacuum on the gong shot caused a lower velocity than expected? :)

Rick Corbitt

Fun video, Destin. One of the many things I find interesting is the baseball isn't rotating at all. I would have guessed it would have at least have a tiny bit. With no rotation, it should be knuckling as it flies and I don't detect any of that, either. I supposed the speed and short distance is overriding any knuckling and beginning of any rotation.

MatteBush

I play drums. Any plans for that gong?

Joel L Peterson

I keep thinking about that old phrase "you can tell the men from the boys by the price of their toys".

PATRICK WATTS

When my son saw the high speed of the baseball going through the gong, he said “that would be an awesome album cover!!!”

Joe McCormack

Do you have a safe rating for PSI the tank can pressurize to? How does the outside temperature impact that rating? I presume you're staying well south of whatever figure you've calculated.

Matt Dunlap

My guess as to why the sprinkles all explode: it's like how nukes work. One nucleus pops and sends neutrons in all directions to possibly collide with and pop others. Same thing there, but with more sugar and less x-rays.

Hunter Coffin deKieffer

You wouldn't happen to be planning to shoot a super sonic baseball with a firearm while it's mid-flight, would you?

Theflashjaxx

What happens if you shoot something highly flammable? I am curious if the initial explosion from the compression could actually ignite something.

lulskartkski

If you're ever short on target ideas As a baseball umpire myself, I'd be very curious to see the effect of a Mach 1+ fastball on umpire/catcher protective gear. Or the impact on a bat. I'd be very curious to know if the ball would disintegrate on the bat or if the bat would break first... Probably both though I hope that's not the the crazy shower idea you had. Anyhow, here's to more caracterization videos And lots of fun!

Richard Smithmeyer

I am a Cincinnatian and former Bearcat. In honor of the upcoming UC v Bama game I say you shoot the losing team's mascot (a stuffed one). I've been a fan of your channel since I was in college keep up the good work!

Peter Taylor

Canon target suggestions: - candle wax (melt at instance of impact?) - laptop head on, on the flat side - lcd screen with it on to see the ripple effect - spinning house box fan. Hit the blades while they’re at full speed - full wine bottle impacting the bottom end head on, traveling through the bottle - kinetic sand - shaken bottle or can of soda pop - sealed container of dry ice, water if you can time it because it blows up - inflated car tire - metal and wood baseball bat - jar of molasses - another baseball - billiards ball - 10 bowling pins to see if you get a strike - oak tree log - gas container to see if the little fireball at impact would ignite the fuel. Might not work due to lack of oxygen and it being way too fast lol - a volume of water held together in a static form, with a material that will break away easily from the baseball. See how the water behaves Let me know if you have any questions. Really hope to meet you some day.

Rhyon Teller

A car door or an engine block

Neal

I'd love to see a giant newton's cradle. There are a few big ones on Etsy.

Jonathan Frisby

Jello or Fish tank or ballistics gel or maybe tanerite

Brent Sanford

I think it would be neat to find a way to remove the wind from the cannon. It seems that the wind greatly adds to the carnage. There is a short window with the time-lapse that you can see what damage just the baseball has caused before the wind erases it. It would be nice to see the full results of the baseball's impact.

Dale

I can't see this ever happening but I wonder what it looks like when two supersonic baseballs collide head on

Jason Allen

Fantastic video as always. The talk of ninja stars got me thinking. I'd love to see you shoot a baseball at a knife's edge. Mount a chef's knife such that it's standing vertical, with the sharp edge of the blade towards the cannon. It would be interesting to see if you could cleanly cut a baseball in half before it gets shredded on impact with the backstop.

Lior Singer

Are you open for more ideas? What about water jet going to the opposite direction. So maybe it will stop the ball while moving...

Lior Singer

Second idea I had was to fire on a second baseball. Trying to get a billiard effect of one ball pushing the other and stopping the first one.

Lior Singer

Third and last idea. Clear fat. A clear tube with a clear fat inside. To have this tube long enough that we can see the baseball stops on the way.

Joshua Griffes

Destin, the gong was cool but the glass? Oh man that gave me chills.

Austin Burnham

That glass breaking was beautiful. The shock wave was unexpected, and I love how the glass changed direction as it fell once the wind reached it. Excellent work, Destin.

Catherine Thompson

Just a thought from a middle school nephew of mine, how would this work with a basketball?

Dan Herman

Hopefully what I'm sharing isn't the top-secret idea, but I pictured the idea of you using a baseball glove (catcher, I suppose) to use as the target vs the cannon. And, to 'catch' with a baseball glove from an approximate distance when factoring distance, velocity, drag, etc.

Workbench

It'd be interesting to shoot it through a series of metal grids so that maybe the ball can end up sliced at the end once it breaks through the first, oh, 20 grids! Keep killing it with excellent content!

Christopher Rooney

This is such a cool project! I'm not a huge fan of graphing on plywood, but thanks for doing it anyway! I'm looking forward to the finished graph! The target idea I came up with while watching this is a big piece of memory foam. I don't know if you're still taking suggestions, but I thought I'd throw it out there!

Richard Henderson

Target idea: Large diameter clear acrylic tube. Example here: https://www.mcmaster.com/8486K835/. Fill with water and seal with thin acrylic sheet on both ends. Seal with acrylic solvent/glue/silicone or equivalent. Fire the baseball through the tube axially. May be able to witness cavitation as the pipe fails simultaneously.

Flat Earther For Life.

Hello, I just became a new patreon supporter. I had an idea for your baseball cannon. A 1 cubic ft. (Or larger) SOLID BLOCK of lego bricks.

Aaron Smith

My son wants to see a baseball shot through a car. Into the driver's door and out the passenger's door.

Samuel merrill

You may not be taking suggestions for the baseball cannon anymore...but if you are...Stretch armstrong...

Matt Holmes

There’s a chicken cannon at SWRI also, in San Antonio TX. If you’re super bored, SWRI puts on a fantastic Penetration Mechanics course (3 days if I remember correctly) to cover the technical side of impacts (they skip the interior ballistics, it’s more about calculating penetration depths, including the simulation tools incl. hydrocodes).

Brad Willman

I was unable to suggest this earlier but I have a suggestion for any future baseball canons, Since I'm Canadian I MUST throw down the gauntlet and challenge a baseball to a hockey puck Or even better, an array of hockey pucks in a dartboard shape loosely held together for target practice. Maximum mayhem, accuracy is key. Chaos ensues!

David Sallge

I have just now seen that video and the results were truly awesome! I've had the impression, that the gong just moved a tiny bit from the impact, but was then blown away from the shockwave of the canon. It would be really interesting, to set up a second metal plate in front of the gong with a hole in it, so just the baseball would hit the gong, not the shockwave. This might actually be a really interesting setup for a lot of impact-related data.
