This video just kind of happened.  I was in Destin, FL with the Coast Guard and Justin said "We're going to do a Victor Sierra".  I had no idea what that was and just kind of went with it.  Turns out it was a super deep interesting hole to fall into!  I had no idea that so much went into how the Coast Guard searches for people.

As a Patron, I'd like to know what kinds of things you'd like to know about the Coast Guard.  I believe if I asked them they'd be willing to talk to me about certain topics.

Having worked directly with them for some of my professional career, they have always been more than willing to discuss. They know where to draw the limits! During my flight test times with USCG if we weren't actively doing test points I would continually ask about the conops of the aircraft and use that feedback on how to better lighten the load or make their tasks more efficient. One of the proudest programs I had worked on in my life.

I assume that there are a lot of patterns, so I'd love to see a description of them all and an explanation as to why they would use some patterns over others in some situations. Saying that before I could watch the video so... maybe it's already there lol edit: I just watched the video and it was indeed there :) way to think ahead Destin :P

xtra_chz_plz

It would be cool to learn more about their combat capabilities and how they might work with the Navy in combat situations.

Steve Jones

Such a cool video. Didn't know so much went into SAR. It's worth mentioning specifically, although it was implied, that when they're going 6kts in the pattern for 1 minute per leg, it's 6kts WATER speed, definitely NOT by GPS speed, since the whole point of this is to figure out how fast and in what direction things are floating. In otherwords if they are going 6kts but happen to be going upstream against a 2kt flow, they will show a 4kt speed on the GPS on that leg. So similar to aviation navigation where you adjust for wind direction and speed.. I would be curious to know what they use physically to measure water speed. Is it a water wheel type mechanism? In a plane, it's air pressure based but that wouldn't work so much in water. Also, that mechanism has to work in very choppy water and can't be affected by the flow caused by the engines, even when going in reverse. I cant think of a reliable, accurate, easy answer.. I love that when they pulled the dummy from the water, they knocked his head directly into the wall (oops!) then grab him by the neck.. Hope he survived!! :-)

Iriscilla Ayala

This is more of a general shipping question but how fast is a nautical knot?

bill miller

very cool video as always Destin. Thank you. I would be interested in when they would choose some of those other patterns. Victor Sierra seems a very efficient pattern when compared to the "snake pattern" as an example.

Gregory Williams

An interesting topic could be the science behind water survival. Theres so many disciplines that go into it, physics, anatomy/physiology, oceanography, etc. Everything from rip currents to abandoning ship. I think its an opportunity to make an educational and entertaining video that has the potential to save a life someday.

Isaac Larson

I got to watch the Coast Guard in action when I was commercial fishing in Alaska. They’re wildly respected in the fishing community as they are the guys who will quite literally save your life when push comes to shove, and for a boat in my area they did the very thing. Great video Destin God bless, keep up the amazing work!

Thomas Burke

would love to see some info on rescue swimmers

Peter Taylor

Such a great ending! Mustache to mustache 🤣🤣🤣 Really cool thought process about the moving datum. Makes complete sense. Next time I can’t find my phone or keys, I’m going to perform these patterns 🤪

Peter Taylor

It would be interesting to know what type of tolerance they have to hold these lines. Also, how many passes do they make of these patterns, and what justifies changing to a different pattern after one is not working.

Matt Hilden

If it ever fits into an upcoming video, I'd love to know how coasties deal with motion sickness. This seems like something a recruit might not know about until they have already enlisted and are out on the boat in heavy seas - and then how do they deal with it?

Jake Sully

Great video Destin about this critically important work. If you really want to blow your mind about moving water, something we teach to yachties is how to sail backwards under full forward sail. There’s a hint I’m this video about that. Have fun with that one!

Mike Stichter

It would be interesting to see a video from you on USCGC Eagle. How it is used by the Coast Guard, the training involved, the technology, its significance to the fleet, etc.

MRudisile

Oh man! I was just having a good laugh on your zoom in and enhance moment there, but that “accidentally placed” bidet themed post it? Laminar flow and all… You rock! I guess Matt is happy with that too huh. Minor Stuff made here inspiration on that scene? Love it! I also really appreciate your “real human” moments. You’re inspiring me and people around me in a good way dude. Now, on with the video…

Zakabog

My fiance and I were able to do the finger gun whistle! Took a couple tries but I've always wanted to learn how to do that!

Bill Bodrero

"'Zoom.' And 'enhance.'" LMBO Nice! Update: I just finished this video, and I have to confess that when you said, "... some dummy...," I truly thought that you were the 'dummy' in question. I was only mildly disappointed at the reality of what occurred. I also totally understand that those fine folks probably couldn't authorize tossing some civilian in the drink for the sake of a gag. I also respect that you're the kind of guy who would not toss himself in out of respect for them. Good job, dummy. 😉 *I'm copying my own comment from YT here because I really want you to see it, Destin. After all, you are one of my very favorite dummies. 😆 Also, this is an official request for SED to produce a logo-ed "SCIENCE DUMMY" shirt. I'm thinking a nice bold angular font, one word over the other, with the words set at an angle up and to the right, and slightly offset so they form a parallelogram. I would proudly purchase multiple and wear them in very public places, just for you, good sir.

John Kha

Would love to see a tour of the big National Security Cutter and learn more about their maritime drug interdiction mission.

Gregg Simms

What kind of sensors are they using to look for people and objects in the water? Are they using IR or Lidar to help search in the dark?

Gareth Patterson

You made a comment about how to tell the PORT / LEFT from RIGHT / STARBOARD.... How do you calculate which side is GREEN / RED. We all know the car coming from the right at a 4-way stop has the right of way. That's because they would see the GREEN light on the car to their left at the 4-way stop. The car on the left would see RED on the car to their right. GREEN = go... RED = stop Change CAR to BOAT, and there's the answer. So, GREEN is right.... RED is left. Cool?

ADAM VORE

Does the "Victor Sierra" stand for anything... VS in phonetic alphabet, but maybe Vector search, Single vessel? or something like that?

Halifax

I have never in my life been able to whistle like that and I've tried so many different times to learn how. I've followed all kinds of different instructions and you just did it on the first try.

Zachary Parrish

How do their specific duties and patterns vary area to area? What' different about acting between Biloxi and Panama City vs Savannah to Charleston, or somewhere on the west coast?

Greg Strike

Ok, Victor Sierra patterns are awesome. Thanks Destin. Also, Mustache to mustache...

Anonymous

Great video Destin. As for a question to them.... I imagine they run into a lot of scenarios where folk think they're doing the "right" thing when they're really not. What are the most surprising, but still common, mistakes of that type which they encounter?

Anonymous

Any chance they’d let you on the USCGC Eagle? It’d be REALLY awesome to learn about the operations of a tall ship under sail.

Anonymous

I had a similar question -- like do each of the lookouts have a high-powered searchlight? No matter how they're doing it, it's got to be so tough...

Workbench

I had never been able to do the loud whistle. It took more more than the first try, but I got it. I then tried one-handed and did it on the second try. Thanks Justin and Destin! It only took me 37 years. 😂

B.Y.

It worked! I could never manage to get that whistle before and it worked on the first try! Thank you! 😆 I just started laughing as soon as it happened

Zach Wiggin

Man that's a cool intro drawing timelapse
