My Dad helped build the James Webb Space Telescope's sunshield. He's has one of the best minds I know and I'm very fortunate to have such a great teacher as my father.  I'm grateful for all he's taught me through the years and I'm very proud of him for many reasons.  Many thanks to the many thousands of people who have done incredible work like Dad to make the JWST possible!

Regards,

Destin

Just started watching it and very quickly as you were talking about it I realized how awesome this moment was and special for you. And then you noted exactly what I thought, “it transcends everything, it’s my dad.” I got to see a little bit of what my dad did while I was younger. But man I would have killed to be older to be able to stand next to my dad and ask those questions engineer to engineer. Thank you so much for sharing this and at least remember the lessons my dad was able to teach while I was younger.

Tired Darryl is the best.

Robert MacPherson

Ah the nut doesn't fall far from the tree, YOU TWO.....!! Fantastic to see this, I loved it..!!!! 4:00 am.

Nicholas Potter

This is lovely. Thank you so much, and please thank your dad!

This is awesome in so many many ways. Truly history, and not only were you there (and us by proxy) but you and your family were part of it. Thank you for sharing Destin. It was incredible to meet your father.

Jerome Barakos, M.D.

Not only technologically phenomenal, but with the underlying heartwarming sentiment. Really touching and I trust all of us would have cherished being able to have such an interaction with our own fathers. Thank you for sharing such a special video.

Kevin Gibson

Dang this is great! I wish we had your dad in my last job - we used very similar setups with the laser scanners and reference spheres to generate "ground truth" which we could use to evaluate computer vision algorithms for environment mapping. Keeping track of all the different coordinate spaces was a headache!

Irish Guy

Such a great video. Had to buy a shirt based off of it. I can't believe they had been working on that project for so long. This is the kind of stuff I love to see. Keep up the good work.

Alex Pete

I'm actually a metrologist in Huntsville too, was awesome to see the trades exposure and this marvel of engineering.

Rick Corbitt

Wow, what a great video and special experience with your dad for you. It was super interesting. I was a tiny bit disappointed we never learned why sun side of the shield is purple...LOL

This made my day. It ran me through the gambit of emotions ranging from pride in our country, pushing me along my engineering degree path, to fond memories with my dad. You’re an inspiration to many. It’s clear who gave you yours.

I am so excited about this telescope. I wait eagerly for each new update. This video is your best one yet! I'm so glad you have these inside connections to satisfy my hunger while we wait for the first images to come back. It's so inspiring to see that our most sophisticated scientific endeavors are pioneered by ordinary people.

Jim Devilbiss

The telescope is a very exciting instrument to bring us some very old information. For me the most fascinating part was the relationship between you and your dad. The most shocking part was that on this extremely delicate measurement system they were using inches.

Michael Coolidge

This was fantastic in too many ways. I loved to see you and your dad together. I learned so much. I had wondered how so much of that precise measurements are done. I have been doing matrix transformations for so long. It was good to see how and why they can be so important. I build rockets as part of my job. Seeing how satellites are done was eye opening. Keep it up!

Dear Destin. We also like your dad :) Keep up the good work!

Will

This was one of your best videos, and I have so many thoughts. The explanation about the sun shield radiating away heat generated by the instruments and not just reflecting sunlight was a ah-hah moment for me. Also, there were a few moments when I had to focus really hard to tell you and your dad apart when I could only see a couple inches of face, which I thought was funny. You got to stand in the middle of the JWST - how awesome is that?

Jack Griffiths

This telescope will definitely change everyone's perspective of our universe. Honestly such a touching video. Happy to be part of the journey!

Mermaldad

Thanks so much for this video, Destin. I'm one of the thousands of ordinary people supporting the X-59 aircraft, and I feel a little like your dad. I'm proud of the work my team has done, and hoping that everything goes well so that we can watch our baby fly for the first time late this year. Give your dad my best wishes.

Joshua Griffes

I waited to watch this until I was sure I had the time to devote to it. It was really cool to learn about the measuring process and why it's important. It's something I had never thought of before. By the end, I also really felt how this video was important to you and your dad. Really cool stuff. I can't wait to see what the JWT discovers!

MikeW

Destin, you absolutely win for best 'went to work with Dad' story! I thought I had a good one, but wow. Plus extra points for patience - keeping it under your cap until JWST was safely at L2.

Steve Wells

Super cool, thanks Destin! Several times I thought "Wow, I _really_ hope no one trips over near that thing" - thankfully no one did.

Patrick Roehrman

I was smiling the whole time I watched that. Your Dad is such a joyful, smart, humble man. I always enjoy listening to him.

Spencer Thomas

This episode was special to me. My father in law was an aerospace engineer, and his last job was doing stress analysis for the solar panels on the international space station. Watching this brought back fond memories of him.

B.Y.

Hey, it's a little late, but it would be super cool to see you talk about the Hemispherical Resonator Gyroscopes that the Webb uses. They are super cool IMHO
