Thank you for supporting Smarter Every Day on Patreon!  There is no sponsor for this video. You allowed me to make this video and I'm extremely grateful.  I never thought I'd see a machine that combines all 3 interesting optical phenomena:

Rolling Shutter

Aliasing

Persistence of Vision

And it was built in the 1930s!

So cool! Now what do we do with those videos that say time is an illusion?

Steve Jones

You're always one step ahead of my questions as I watch these videos.. I was watching that, and saying to myself "I bet that curve is because the shutter has inertia and so it takes a while to get up to speed" and then you addressed it. I am curious if this means that on a film camera, will the edge have a noticeably slower shutter speed than the center of an image. I wonder if there's a way to quantify or measure this. I assume it wouldn't be enough to tell by the naked eye on a typical picture..

These videos are really great. Proud to be a supporter.

Reminds me of a similar method used with horse racing for photo finishes (win, place show), done with film in the 1970's and now with digital.

Peter Anniko

Fantastic video - well done - also, as an Estonian/American it’s cool to see something with an Estonian connection

Tyson Lidback

I love the comparison between mechanical and digital.

One of the reasons I like Destin's videos so much is that he gets as excited and mind-blown as I do over the same types of things. such as, the concept of engineers in the '30s solving the problem of measuring milliseconds. Another great video Destin!

Chris K

Hello Destin, Excellent video. Leaves me with one thing I cannot wrap my head around. Why are is the picture getting blacker, the faster the shutter goes? I try to imagine it visually in my head, but fail. Cheers from Munich!

Maximilian Hiesinger

Amazing and interesting video Destin! I‘d be happy to translate the Leica service manual page for you if you‘re interested.

semanticboat

How are the shutter speeds adjusted once determined? I poked around kamerastore and didn't see info on that, maybe I'm missing it. Great video as always, brightens my day to see new videos on my phone notifications when I'm out!

Nicholas Lamberti

Fantastic and interesting video as always Destin! Always learn something from your videos! The beginning of the video had me curious of what your camera setup is in your studio. Would you (or if someone knows) be able to comment on what you use when you’re at your desk?

Michael Heliker

As the video progressed I just kept thinking... "bring out the phantom", "bring out the phantom".. and then BOOM 20k FPS... awesome stuff!!

Dave DeBaeremaeker

This was way more fascinating than I expected. What a great way to solve a complex problem with 1920s tech!

Travis Macie

Awesome video! I hope you tried to visit with Hydraulic Press Channel while you were there, thats their home town!

Chris K

Thanks. Still don't get it. The only way I can make this work in my head is, if the machine displays black with light stripes, instead of light with black stripes. (Thinking as I type here.) I kinda got the initial idea, it was the latter, but now that I think about it in reverse, it makes much more sense. The longer the slit is open, the more time the drum has to rotate and the more it can paint the picture light. Which matches with the idea of reducing motion blur: the shorter the exposure, the fewer motion blur there is, the sharper and closer to reality the final image will be. Thus: 1/1000 shows basically all dark with small light stripes: that is what the drum must actually look like.

This made my day. I am always excited by your videos Destin. My sons got me hooked. We talk about all kinds of things and bounce ideas off each other. Then along comes your videos and we see how close or far we are to what you prove. We love the family think tank time especially when Dad/Hubby dives in too.

Edward Conway

Totally captivating. Who knew tat such tech was available in the 1930s?

Blaise

That was awesome!!! I follow Camerastore for a year now. They have awesome thing. The problem is: It is hard to explain my wife why I need a 8th filmcamera… 🫣

Adric Menning

I was lazy and waited until youtube showed it to me.. but yay this was awesome! shared it with my camera nerd friends.

Samuel merrill

Just got myself a camera for my birthday! Thank you for the awesome videos on film photography :)
