The specifics of how to do this has been inside my head since 2017.  We finally did it.  Please know that long-term projects (and frankly, thinking) like this is only possible because of your long-term support on Patreon. I'm truly grateful for your support.  I'm considering doing a Patron only discussion/livestream about this project. Would that interest you?  Also, after watching the video, let me know what you think about making this our new sticker!

Definitely would love this as a sticker! Great job Destin!

Nate Jacoby

As soon as I saw the title I thought it would be a great idea for the sticker!

Steve Jones

Love the sticker idea! Also would be cool to randomly pick one supporter to get some shrapnel to display next to the baseball! :-)

Steve Jones

I dont know enough about muzzle speeds to be able to make this recommendation, but isn't 410 the same size as the 44lc? Maybe a small shotgun slug would have a slower velocity? Actually, as I write this, I am thinking they may be steel though...

Jim Devilbiss

What a great way to start a Saturday. I agree with the others. I think this is your sticker for this year.

Jared Durham

This is definitely the coolest video I've seen on YT this year, if not longer. Love the scientific process and safety approach that's taken. As a north Alabamian, I'm proud that this level of content comes from so close to home!

Jonas Wahlen

Destin, congrats on this awesome achievement! I was surprised to find myself with goosebumps when I saw the rear ends of those FMJ bullets stay perfectly in place. Thanks for creating such amazing content and staying true to the name of your channel!

Andy Goforth

Such an interesting experiment! Thanks!! **Off topic question - I have been wanting to ask forever - In your office(?), what is that corded, rectangular, tv remote control looking thing with the blinking lights/buttons at the top right of your world map?? And, yes, please make bullet smack stickers!!

Benjamin S. Scarlet

In essence, a particle accelerator is like doing what you've done here and trying to learn about bullets by from the patterns in how the fragments fly out. Perhaps for another video, you could draw that analogy.

Edward Conway

That was amazing! The amount of prep that went into this project reflects on the good science that was displayed in the result. Maybe you can have another go at it down the road and get the fusion you want. Looking forward to bullet stickers!

Chris Mears

So awesome! And yes to a discussion/livestream! Thank you so much for your enthusiasm for this stuff. I love getting smarter everyday!

Kyle

Why not have them meet in a piece of ballistic gel or in a piece of Lucite, and see what happens?. You could try and make a very thick ballistic gel or something similar that has good consistency and slippery properties

Justin Newnum

As a safety professional I loved seeing the safety procedures for this.

Matthew J Palka

Worthwhile quality ruckusmaking! Loved seeing this and your enthusiastic, surprised enjoyment in figuring this out.

Andy Upton

That's a clock. He explained it in a video a while back. Each group of LED lights represents a digit of the time based on how many are lit at the time. It's an interesting way to see how long he spends making these videos based on the time showing on the clock.

Marc Selman

The sticker team could be called: Head 2 Head: Smarter Everyday

Eric Maher

Haven't watched the video yet. I did try the link for the Ridge stuff. You should put a caveat in your email and the video that the offer ONLY applies to US. I'm in Australia, and even adding /smarter once on the site just gives a "404" error. No doubt because it sends me immediately to the Australian site.

@ClydeFrog

Sticker idea, frames of bullets colliding on a film strip...

Mike in Texas

How do you know the original fused bullets didn't occur in a similar way...hitting something to slow it down?

Benjamin Le Page

That's so cool, now imagine how much harder it would be to get 2 bullets to hit mid air when one is going north and the other is going east.

Kevin J Teitel

That was your best video ever! Love the safety stuff and figuring out the lose nut (kinda like me). I am a marine egnineer so trouble shooting is what I do and seeing you guys do it is a blast! Keep up the great work. When the bullets were hitting and the different planes happened I thought that was really cool too. I am also a nerd.

Ryan Simpson

While there are some guns that can fire both .45 Colt cartridges and 410 bore shot shells, they aren't quite the same size and it's a compromise (sometimes involving use of a choke tube to get any accuracy out of the 410.) To your point, however, smooth bore shotguns are lower pressure and could potentially be loaded to lower velocities before running into squib issues like they did in this video.

Travis Macie

Nice work!! I'm really curious about your method of the electronic primers. I've had an idea on how to do this for a while but have never tried it, safety being one of the main reasons. Also, for the bullet lead, my guess would be to use a more pure (softer) lead. A lot of manufactured ingots will have linotype to make the bullet a little harder so they hold up to higher velocities. For propellant, try black powder and a wad in the case. That may cause some filming issues though....

Joseph C

this was incredible ❤️

Andy Goforth

Thanks Andy…any chance you could drop a link to that video here?

Steve Kurt

I love these big projects! Kudos for making safety a priority. I enjoyed the conflict between hoping for good results right away, versus the typical "it didn't work the way we expected, and now we have to really understand what is going on" sort of issue. I was sorta hoping to see some data on the variability of the delay from the time the trigger command was issued to the time the bullet exited the barrel. Maybe for the "real engineer nerds" side channel? ;-)

Zairl's Size Games

I'm rather curious what reactions the people at Ridge had when they first saw the footage with their wallets! That's probably the most interesting ad footage I've seen in a long time

Martin Croft

Gav and Dan will be soo jealous

Jacob Vallandingham

Awesome!! Just watched the video. The bullets hitting each other and stopping midair is epic! Also just got my first real engineering job out of college, so Im exited that I will be able to continue supporting your work Destin!

George Burgyan

Something to consider is that modern "lead" used to cast bullets it typically an alloy of lead, tin, and antimony. The tin and antimony in the alloy are added to increase the hardness of the bullet. What I'm seeing in the high-speed shots is that the bullet is shattering, which to me at least, tells me that it's experiencing a brittle fracture instead of expending its energy deforming. Another thing that has been mentioned is that a .45 is smaller than the typical .58 caliber rounds that were used. The museum exhibit mentioned that it was two Minie bullets, which were .58 caliber. By increasing the size of the round, it increases the surface area that the powder charge can act on. This would, in my estimation at least, allow you to reduce the charge to get a reduced muzzle velocity that may also help in sticking them together. In any case, thanks for making this video! Super fascinating!

Steve Jones

I KNOW I have seen that in a video too, but I can't find it now either.. I dont think it was the main subject of a video, but rather just a "by the way.. people have been asking" but I can't remember in which one..

Nasi Feles

This is a great idea!

Nasi Feles

This was awesome, great video for sure! Thank you Destin!

Joshua Pulliam

This is so great! I really enjoyed the video and learning about the process to make it happen. Thanks Destin!

Elliot

Amazing video! A discussion about it would be amazing. Behind the scenes on the specifics of the setup would be really interesting. Thanks for the video!

Daniel

This was fantastic! Are you going to put the long version on the smarter every day 2 channel?

Reef

This one really tickled my engineering bits Destin. Bloody loved that you showed all of the safety procedures. Also... Ridge must have loved that ad! Awesome stuff.

Vanella

Absolutely brilliant, and thank you for showing us all the stuff

JGToll

Fascinating video. Needless to say, the attempt to fuse the two bullets was ambitious and clever. What I found equally impressive was the safety procedure you created and then its evolution through peer review. Very Smart. Oh yes, I'm buying the wallet! Clearly the most clever promotion of a product ever made.

Mrgunsngear

As someone who also makes videos - the amount of energy/time that had to go into this is insane. Respect...

Evan J

This is incredible! The bullets colliding make me think about things colliding in space; the slow mo footage looks like galaxies forming

Eli Marlin

As someone in the business of making test systems which involve a significant element of danger for operator safety: I really appreciate the portion of this video where you talk about the humility of creating safety procedures, and the value of having colleagues and experts go through said procedures to poke holes and offer suggestions. I’m sharing this video with everyone on my team who is involved with establishing safe operation procedures in our labs. On top of all that: excellent video and amazing content!

Michael Hahn

Super enjoyed this video too, Destin.

Randy Coffee

All that safety and no hearing protection. I now wish id never fired a gun without it. Tinnitus is maddening.

Tor Park

Great video! I admire your commitment to not becoming sensational and clickbaity. As for the sticker, I think it might be cooler to have a Prince Rupert's Drop Team, though the Bullet v Bullet would be awesome too.

Jeramy Olson

Oh please Do a live stream for us

George Kelly

yep, I came to the comments here to say this. Seemed like the material in Destin's bullets wasn't the same as the civil war bullets.

Joe Schneider

After watching and seeing a failure to fuse I have two suggestions. The first is to use a Minié ball and switch to black power. The other is to play around with different lead alloys.

Justin Milum

My 7, 8 and 10 year old and I loved watching this together!

Richard Cox

Did you think about leaving all that toxic lead on the ground?

Chris K

Maybe cut the barrels shorter? secure the propellant with wool at the bottom? use thinner bullets to reduce friction? maybe put out a tarp to catch some of the lead.

Benjamin Howe

Livestream? Yes, please! I think my favorite part is the line about surrounding yourself with smart people who love you enough to look you in the eye, smile, and tell you you're wrong.

Reuben Rosenberg

You beat me to the punch! I was thinking that using traditional black powder might have an impact. I like your idea of using Minié balls, as well as that of changing the alloy composition.

Nic langford

This was exactly my first thoughts. It is like a Newtonian particle smasher :-) and the plane of fragments is WAY cool. BTW, @Destin, in the vid you said something like "makes a 3D plane", is that a pyramid. 3 points define plane, 4 points required for 3D shape?

Derek Wood

Along with your point about the lead composition I was also thinking about minie balls being hollow in the back to allow them to expand in order to engage the rifling. Do you think that may have helped with the fusion?

Nathan Baltazar

I know I'm probably wrong as I don't have experience in this feild, but wouldn't the Civil War firing points be further apart? I feel like shooting them point blank definitely has better chances of them hitting, however would airtime and bullet temperature play a role in the lack of fusion? Or would the extra airtime not allow enough temperature decrease to make a difference?

Chris Ottinger

My new favourite phrase "atmosphere of intellectual humility". Love the work.

Steve Coleman-Williams

I suspect it would be more down to the speed, which is addressed in the latter parts of the video Temperature wouldn't be too much of a concern as the pressure at which the rounds collide hit (even at lower speeds) would be far greater than the temp transfer of the initial explosion from the cartridge. Similar to a space shuttle re-entry, the temperature is caused by pressure, not friction.

John Cox

@20:46 was a beautiful shot!

Michael T

Great safety explanation.

Anthony K.

That slow-mo footage of the revolver makes me giggly every time I see it!! Love your work, my friend!!!

Jeff Murri

I think it'd be cool to have a livestream about this Destin.

Andy P

Hi Destin, was really fascinating video that you have produced. Very curious that the lead fragments rather than deforming. Could the modern lead be an alloy that makes it more brittle than the historic lead that was pure lead , or had some natural contamination that made it softer. Would be very interesting to compare the composition of different lead samples. Keep up the great work :)

David Hile

What would happen it you tried the same thing but have the collision occur in a smallish block of jell. Would it help “capture” the event
