(Caption) Perfect butterfly specimen (Patreon)

In that room where the curtains were drawn all year round, the air was filled with the mixed scents of dry paper, wooden cabinets, and preservation chemicals. Butterflies lined the walls in neat rows, each pinned within a velvet-backed frame, wings spread wide, their colors frozen at the most brilliant instant. He stood at the center of the room, yet his gaze always returned to the empty frame in the very middle. It had been reserved for "the most perfect butterfly." He had collected countless specimens, but none of them ever seemed worthy of that place.
Late at night, a light unlike moonlight began to shimmer outside the house. A strange green luminescence flickered among the trees, like a swarm of luminous insects, or something summoned from beyond. The glow seeped along the window frames and slipped through the cracks, flowing into the room like a living thing. In the next moment, the specimens on the walls began to tremble. Wings that had long been still let out a faint rustling sound, their colors reviving within the light.
The green radiance surged toward him and wrapped around his entire body. His clothing was the first to change—fabric softened, stretched, and reshaped within the glow. His simple garments were rewritten into layers of gauze and lace, flowing and delicate. Then his body followed. Bones and contours yielded to a gentle yet irresistible force, shrinking and rearranging. His figure grew slender, his shoulders softened, his waist drew in, and his legs lengthened into graceful lines. His height diminished little by little, as if the light and the world of specimens were redefining him.
When the transformation ended, the mirror reflected a completely different figure. Her features were refined and gentle, her skin glowing softly, as though washed by the dew of a forest morning. Her makeup was not heavy, yet exquisitely deliberate: pale green and gold shimmered faintly at the corners of her eyes, echoing the patterns of butterfly wings. Her lashes were long and delicate, like tiny resting feathers. Her lips carried a subtle, petal-like hue.
Her hair cascaded like a waterfall, colored somewhere between pale green and silvery white. Long strands were carefully braided into multiple plaits, then allowed to loosen at the ends. Small flowers and butterfly ornaments were woven among the strands. A few locks slipped over her shoulders, swaying gently with her movements, as though they belonged to the wind itself.
Her attire resembled a living work of art. The dress was formed from layers of translucent light-green chiffon and deeper green fabrics, the skirt spreading outward in soft tiers. Fine embroidery traced the hems—flowers, vines, and delicate motifs—accented with gold and amber-like gemstones that resembled frozen droplets of dew. The decorations at her waist and bodice were intricate and elaborate, where metal and jewels intertwined, evoking both an insect’s carapace and the ceremonial attire of a forest spirit. Fine chains and floral ornaments circled her ankles, and her shoes were light and elegant, perfectly harmonized with the rest of her appearance.
As she admired herself, the specimens behind her slipped free from their frames. They whirled through the air and gathered at her back. The once-pinned wings overlapped and fused, forming a magnificent pair of wings. They were translucent and resplendent, patterns of green, gold, and amber flowing within them. Their edges were sharp yet graceful, as though forged from glass and gemstones. Small frames and delicate chains hung among the wings, swaying gently like ornaments of memory.
She slowly turned, and the mirror showed her fully embraced by those wings. In that moment, she understood. What she had been searching for was never an external specimen, never a single butterfly to be found in the world. The perfection she sought was herself—this flawless balance of beauty, stillness, and splendor.
She moved toward the wall and stood before the empty frame. The green light gradually faded, and silence returned to the room. She lifted her head, spread her wings, and calmly pressed herself against the wall, becoming part of the display. Within the frame, the most perfect butterfly had finally found its place.
