As we close in on our first birthday, we thought it high time to launch a new series: The Essentials Tutorials. Our inaugural tutorial - the Airbrush!

This will be aimed at covering all the nitty gritty details and will form an irregular series alongside the PDF tutorials. Not only will you receive a PDF tutorial, but an accompanying video alongside it, explaining techniques in a short, digestible way.

I hope you enjoy. Will catch you soon!

I’ve just bought an airbrush, so great timing for me. With regards to the thinner is there a rule of thumb about when to use it and when to use flow improver?

My love/hate relationship with airbrush. Lol sometimes it loves me and we have fun frolicking in the world of paint...other days it hates me and wants to devour my soul like a Chaos God

Top video and pdf Myles.

Excellent, thank you. It clears up a few frustrations I have been having. Notably that white is really a bad color (its not just me) and that I have been trying to do everything at too high a PSI and wondering why I was having issues. I will be ordering some of the comart white and P3 white I think.

hey new sub here. what model is the iwata airbrush you are using? I want to get it as I don't like my harder and steenbeck, the trigger mechanism has broken twice. Great stuff keep it up!

This is a brilliant tutorial and has given me a lot of food for thought, I feel like I have gone from aimless wandering, to having some direction as to how to use my airbrush. bought the sparmax4 based on your review. and have found it to be good, but I had a lot of frustrations over clogging. I did not realise you needed so much thinner to paint. I do have a few questions.... PSI, I assume the psi yu mention is after the pressure drop from when you depress the trigger? (my pressure drops 5-10 psi when I use the trigger). Glazes... do you coat the whole model with the glaze to keep the colour uniform, or are you hitting selected areas to get slightly different tones? Do you use the zenithal, to create the highlights across the model, so you can go straight in with the main colour? At what distanc would you keep the airbrush for priming and basing and how close would you go for doing highlighting? Would you keep the psi the same, when doing them

1) I generally use a lot of thinner to avoid clogging. The paint does not adhere to the surface coherently over the first pass, but you can build in layers and not get frustrated cleaned out your airbrush every 10 mins. 2)Psi: I use a compressor with a tank most of the time so I have a consistent psi of 20. I’d advise using 25 or there about for yours. 3) depends on the effect. If I want to create a filter layer, it goes over the entire miniature. For a glaze I localise the spray to deepen shadows/ midtone or invigorate highlights. 4) psi stays the same throughout painting. My trigger control adjusts the amount of paint that leaves the brush. I normally prime around 20cm or so away from the miniature. Enough for a general coat. Love these questions, really helps others as well. Really glad you’ve joined up! Make sure you send me any progress you make using the tutorials.

I have the cheap Chinese compressor and tank, with thoughts that if the airbrushing was a total blow-out, then I hadn't sunk too much money into it. I shall definitely be doing your exercises, as my trigger control is abysmal. I reckon one of my biggest issues is forgetting to put the trigger back to its start position before coming off the air, which lets paint in and is causing blockages. I will definitely send progress shots.

Hi new patron here and loving your videos so far. Quick question, I have a compressor with a tank and the pressure drops when I start the air through the brush and then it returns to the set psi (20 at the mo) when I stop. Should I set the pressure with the brush air flowing don't reads 20 psi say when in use or when at rest? Also it drops more if I haven't been using it for a few days so i assume it's latent pressure or something that changes and this would obviously affect the psi setting if calibrated when at rest
