Myles, my biggest concern with oil paints is "how do I deal them?" I know that oils take a long time to be chemically dry, and I have had a few friends tell me I cannot seal oils with normal lacquers. I have recently (well, 3 months ago) used an oil wash on 10 Iron Warriors and I'm terrified to seal them, but they desperately need it because they are so high gloss right now.

I’d very much appreciate it if you were to expound upon the clean up process that takes place 2-3 days later. Is the clean up process of absorbing the overspill onto the brush similar to that of its acrylic wash counterpart (such as Nuln Oil or Agrax Earth Shade)?

Hi Myles, was just wondering: you say that using burnt umber and black is the way to go- would you still use these colours on an Emperor's Children purple force? Finally got my hands on some of their transfers, so want to move ahead with getting the force painted asap.

To play it safe; Black is your best bet. But try and use dark violet to soften the transition. I’ve used cobalt blue and a pinch of black for this recent commission

Thanks Myles- I'm thinking of getting Ultramarine Violet and Lamp Black from the W&N range, and giving those a go on some infantry. Just bought a Thunderhawk so want to be sure what to use by the time I get to painting that :D

This may be a little late in the day for a question; however, what about water based oil paints. Could they be used for this?

Daniel Taylor

Can you use the likes of GW washes for this? I work offshore, so thinners are not something I can take away with me, but I can take water based acrylics (non-hazardous goods). Also what sort of ventilation is required when doing pin washes? I have a little one in the house, so would prefer t keep them away from any fumes

I was hoping to get some Wilder aqua line to use, but the company I ordered through said it will be new year before they might be able to dispatch it. I cancelled my order and thought about ordering some of the Windsor & Newton water mixable oil paints. Do you think they will work like traditional oils for pin washes etc?

Daniel Taylor

Right so I got the water based oils and I have had limited success so far. With traditional oils you leave for a day to cure before cleaning up with spirits. Is it a similar process for the water based oils? Leave a day to cure and clean up with water? Do you then need to seal with varnish after clean up?
