Tomorrow we’ll be diving into the gods and religions of Sword/Sorcery. And while we may decide that there’s one or two major religions in this new world, I think it’d be fun to come up with some cults.

In the comments, come up with an idea for a cult that would be in our world.

Make sure to follow the tropes/guidelines I outlined for S&S style fiction in my last post. I’ll create a random cult generator from the ideas I think fit best.

(Try to keep it clean and civil!)

I look forward to your entries!

Given the Dark Sun theme, the Cult of the Joshua Tree, an ancient, lone tree that has defied the ages and the defiled work of man

Shawn Porter

Cult of the Citrus. Due to the lack of food resources, some worship citrus trees of various types for the fruits they provide to sustain life.

Shawn Porter

Cult of the Olives. Olive trees grow well in dry conditions, e.g., Tunisia has over 80 million olive trees that seemingly go from horizon to horizon. Or as mentioned about the Joshua Tree, a single olive tree that is over 2,500 years old.

Diamond worshippers, but more intense than we have in the real world. The clarity of a white diamond is worshipped by followers of the air elementals.

Roosevelt Cooper

A large rock fell from the sky and crashed into the ground. Many believe this was the result of the the great god Danos' displeasure with the inhabitants of this world. Many followers now worship Danos some willingly and others by force all in an attempt to appease him.

Dan Heath

The cult of Ken. One man decided to tell another that he was a divine being as a joke and he was believed. That man went on to tell another, and another and now it's got really out of hand. Ken doesn't have the heart to tell them the truth now and to be honest he quite likes the attention.

i always though about adding some "Cargo Cult" in my fantasy settings ... any idea?

Jonny Faust

"Gargoyle Cult" where flesh and blood creatures try to prove themselves worthy of being turned to stone and adorning a monuments dedicated to their faith

Carlos Zz

How about a cult that is obsessed with the negative plane, calling it their own personal heaven, and believe a lone star in the sky that moves a lot is the entryway where the star is actually a space whale messing with them

Sean O'Brien

Cult of the Believers: inspired by the dedication of other cults, they offer their support from the background, diverting supplies, causing distractions, and if need be, resurrecting dead leaders of these other cults.

Adam Price

Cult of the False Hydra - believe that the everyday mundane worlds they inhabit are proof of the subtle workings of the mind-altering monster they exalt. May or may not be correct.

Doug M

Cult of the Silver Bastion - The members of this cult worship silver, not gold. The more silver jewellery, coin, and trinkets one wears, owns, displays is considered a sign of respect and power in a grit and grime world. Some go so far as to smelt it, partaking in the painful process of coating a body part in silver, revering it as the pinnacle of wealth and station. Silver arms also pack a mean wallop! Dual arms dipped in molten silver and fashioned into arm blades due to the botched fusion to skin and bone? Enemies of the cult are coated in silver and displayed as trophies. It would also be a gruesome warning to any who considered crossing the cult leader.

Alec M

Cult of the snake - worship a giant python like snake that could rival a dragon along with all the smaller ones. They offer apothecary, potion and assassination services along with others, based on venoms and trained poisonous snakes.

Sparkle Durio

Cult of Bacon - believes in the power of bacon. Different flavors of bacon will give them stat boosts, but overconsumption will lead to burnout. The cult of bacon aims for a balance of life, adventuring and bacon.

Ulf Borén

Shadowmasters - an order of evil monks that functions like a cult since it is forbidden by authorities in most regions or kingdoms.

Ulf Borén

Cult of the Obsidian Rod - a cult worshipping the god of death believing that the Demon prince Orcus is the herald of death itself. The cult is absorbed with the idea that they need to, not only, promote, but actively usher in the will of the demon prince.

Ashton Longwell

Cult of the Fossil, focused on unearthing the bones of mighty fallen beasts and raising them from the dead to serve a god of decay

Digby Wrede

Cult of hunger, which drives its followers for more power, hunger for power, hunger for wealth, hunger for more, huuuunger for …….

oh boy I am looking forward to this supplement Cult of the Badger!
