Hey all!

Quick survey this late Sunday evening.

How important is it that your adventure features a map? And how important is its overall design?

I'm a theater of the mind DM so donjon is fine. However, I suspect I am in the minority in this regard lol

Troy Kemp

depends on teh adventure. i like finding own map, but as most games are on VTT, nicely detailed ones are the ones to get great feedback

James Geluso

If there is a detailed map, it should match the text. When it doesn't, I get frustrated, especially when I discover that in the middle of the game.

Jay Grime

I don't always have the resource to print out large battle maps and end up copying them out onto my playmat, and with my unique drawing skills (disadvantage 🤣) the players get a basic drawing and a detailed description

Colin O'Neill

I would prefer to have detailed full colour maps, but I am not the best artist and don't have the time / inspiration to create them myself so usually go with whatever I can find online or pull together quickly before the session.

John Clanton

Very. I pay for the VTT for the plug and play adventures.

I was chatting with Mike Shea about this recently. My current approach to adventures is to start with a map and then add planned encounters in a few locations (a la watabou's One-Page Dungeon generator). I'll ad lib the rest of the stuff. Prep times are WAY down and my level of fun is up!

Interesting cause the way I use maps is I look for them for a good flow for the crawl, and and then I use cutouts to build them on the mat as the players go emulating fog of war

John Covele

It does depend on the type of adventure. For outdoor adventures, city and and tavern encounters, things like that I really don’t use maps too much. Just a map of the entire world to show their relative location. However in a dungeon crawl it’s essential but I don’t really care if it’s full color in that case.

Depends on the context. If I'm running in person, a highly-detailed map is a nice-to-have, but I'm just as happy to sketch something on the table as it comes up as I am to have something made of physical map tiles and props as I am to having a detailed animated map to project down onto the table. If I'm running in Foundry (which is more often for me), I always want a detailed full-color map for crawls and combat encounters.

Frank Dekens

I'm willing to live with a rough map for ShadowDark, to match the old school style, but anything else, I want super high quality maps!

Rich Bushell

I spent some money on 15,000 AI-generated maps and those are "OK" for battles. However, I'd rather build regional, city, and area maps with Inkarnate or use Tom's custom-built maps for my games. Maps give me inspiration and the ability to insert clues for players. I run sessions for smart, creative people who do things for work like cryptography, quantum entanglement research, and AI training. They enjoy the backstory, the lore, and complex story plots. Maps are an integral part of the storytelling for me.
