SquiddlyWinks

5 dragons that the Answer to “how Axel responds” is “with overwhelming violence”

SquiddlyWinks

Also, that wildfire was just a prelude to Dragonfire. Axel gonna get kwispy

Astreaeon

A foreign and internal master of whispers each?

BK-94

can make them both spymasters. One can oversees Westeros while the other cover Essos. Like FBI and CIA

Zarek21

Give the position to both. Margery can be for internal, Tyene external.

Cerberus09

Axel could still easily just sink all the ships at sea? He can swim underwater and the dragons (probably) can't?

Kasikan

Having multiple spymasters is better than only one to begin with. If one screws up or turns traitor, you'll likely know of it before it gets too far. So him appointing both of them would be to his benefit there.

redhawktiger

They're both gonna end up master of whispers lol.....an Thoros of Myr is probably gonna have a rather uncomfortable 2nd meeting with his king lol

Uncle Snoo

Seem a bit too easy tbh. It's hard to change someone's views when they are already convinced of the opposite. Not without proof. I assume he'd have dismissed them immediately if not for who they are. Still Axel is not too arrogant to disregard the possibility of a threat. Now he just needs to pop over to Essos for a quick investigation.

TheSinful

Axel: "Wait, you mean that random gossip making it's way to me wasn't enough to count as a spy network?"

Plastic Soldier

Really surprised there isn't a choice here.

Chainsword83

Cam doesn't do voting on his free writes.

JoeMcCool

Tyene snuck in and blindsided the Tyrells with a steel chair, didn't she? 😄 Like others have suggested both Margaery and Tyene can split the job, since they both came up with intel that Axel did not know about (the Wilding Army and Daenerys' army).

Chainsword83

Five seconds later, King's Landing shakes with the king's bellow of "THOROS! YOU GOT SOME 'SPLAINING TO DO!!!"

Tsorov

Ah yes. The old method of, if my enemy promises to be good, I shall let him be my eyes and ears. What could possibly go wrong. Giving the job of Queen of whispers to a Tyrell is a foolish mistake, that he shouldn't even think about. We as readers from an omnipotent view can see the good Intentions of Margery, but even we don't know what goes around in the head of the queen of thorns. And Axel, with even less information shouldn't choose a Tyrell, who have betryed him once already, as his Spymaster!

Sammy the Shark

Oh no he’s gonna go bald with no eyebrows again lmao

Wafflenator

The last sentence in the third paragraph which starts with "this was supposed to be her triumphant moment" needs adjustment

Kasikan

It's more of a matter of having checks and balances. If he's smart he'd have a spymaster from each of the 7 kingdoms watching their own backyard as well as their neighbors. Though I wouldn't trust Olenna as far as her old ass could hop. Margery on the other hand could be molded into someone to trust, so long as Olenna dies of "natural causes" sometime soon.

Cambrian

Never has been with The Unyielding Stag lol

Redking

Master of foreign affairs and master of domestic affairs.

Lord Sesshomaru

Now Axel finds himself at a crossroads 😬. Option 1 Go north, where he can crush/stop poor Mance and the free folk and increase the army of the dead. Or let them pass, understand the danger so as to reduce the number of deaths the Great Other would create to increase his army. And in exchange, he would win a beautiful Wild Princess. Option 2 Go to Essos, defeat the madness being created by Daenerys and Melisandre, and end it there. OR, stop Melisandre, make a dragon friend, and MAYBE win a beautiful Valyrian/draconic princess (?). Well, it's almost worth a vote 🤔

Sebas Tian

I think the white walkers might be more pressing, sure the dragons are coming, but it takes a long time to travel by ship and that can be further delayed by harrying the ships. The dead have land access and much more threatening imo.

Sebas Tian

So unless daenerys flys over right away, he should be able to wrap up the north, if not delay the dead tide until he can deal with the dragons.

JLG33

We split it up that way in the USA, though historically coordination between the agencies hadn't been that great. Still, it seems like a good plan to bring both of them on board.

Samuel Famakinwa

Dude is going to east to confirm the news himself

Eric Lachance

What a Chad, just casually leaves the room to think. Btw, we have precedent about sharing roles, I don't see why they couldn't both have the role or have a setup where one has officially another role, but is still a mistress of whispers

Hadrian Scipio

Having dual spymasters isn't a bad idea, but I don't think Axel has the patience needed to handle the complications that go with it. The problem with having more than one spymaster is that they tend to fight each other just as much as gathering information for the king. The benefit is that it is harder for the spy organization to conspire against the king. I don't know if Axel is willing and able to keep both women on the task of gathering information, rather that fighting and competing with each other.

Hadrian Scipio

In the first years of the co-existence of the FBI and OSS. FDR spending a lot of time dealing with them fighting with each other, and soothing ruffled feathers. J. Edgar Hoover and William Donavan had very big egos. That caused a lot of conflict between their supporters in the government. I don't know if Axel can handle it.

Alun Lewis

Axel's really got one hell of a decision to make, doesn't he? Both Team Tyrell (really just Oleanna, but Margaery learning the ropes from her means a smooth future chain of succession) and Tyene came to the table with Very Big News that Axel was ignorant to...and both sides have their pros & cons for being the replacement for Varys as Court spymaster. The suggestion made in other comments for this chapter about splitting the role up to allow for dedicated domestic and foreign threat intelligence gathering has merit...but there's too much room currently for unnecessary competition to gain Axel's favour or restore House Tyrell's standing. But there needs to be someone keeping an ear and eye out for dangers NOW, so Axel may need to make it clear that cooperation is the name of the game till the Wilding (read: White Walker) and Targaryen heiress issues are resolved.

Loki's Brand

I mean, he could just delineate a clear division of responsibilities. One Mistress of Foreign Whispers (Tyene) and one of Domestic Whispers (Margaery). There's no reason they have to fight each other when both are loyal to Axel and they have areas of responsibility with no overlap. And honestly, i think you're overstating the problems with the two of them working together. They are both on the same side, and both are effectively Axel's concubines. Just make it clear that they are to work together and share any relevant information they uncover in their different areas of responsibility. And if they squabble, Axel can just fuck the stupid out of them until they're on the same page again. Problem solved!

Sirca Mori

Defo needs to make a ministry of internal affairs and a ministry of foreign affairs type deal here.

Hadrian Scipio

You forgot to factor in Olenna Tyrell. She is going to have her own ideas and ambitions.

JoeMcCool

What can be done is that the mistresses (heh) of whispers answer to Stannis or Davos (poor bastich) and stay in the shadows. Unless of course they have hot intel they need to tell Axel NOW.

Robert Kruger

I want him to realize he's out of his depth and get his queens to give him political advice.
