Good, time for Axel to use his brain again

thevolunteer

I can deal with him getting his ass kicked and how you did the high frequency thing, even if I’m not sure how they knew to exploit it, but how the fuck did their ice spear make it through his armor? Like at the very least have them target a gap in the armor, not the max thickness magic fire steel conceptually opposed to ice spears that has been proven time and time again to resist them.

Knight Revan

Oh axel is so fucked rn. I wonder how they knew of his weakness. I like that magic is also something he cant simply brute force out of without consequence too. Kinda like superman. The esoteric tend to ignore durability.

Knight Revan

The blunt force and penetration from a spear is different than trading blows with a weapon. The force of it was able to kill Viserion, so I imagine that a point blank hit could pierce armor.

Cambrian

This is the same ice spear that one-shot dragon scales in the show. its not simple ice but rather magical conceptual death in ice spear form. That's why Axel can barely even remove it once its lodged inside of him despite all of his power/strength. It's basically made to kill powerful foes like him

Cambrian

The 'shocking' thing is more that he's able to survive it at all, rather than dying in less than a minute like Viserion did

Chainsword83

Thank you Cam. I really appreciate you not making the Others a simple curbstomp like everything else. Axel needed to be reminded that for all that he's the Champion of the Seven and damn near INVINCIBLE , that he's not a god. He was getting cocky and needed to be humbled. Besides, him just ending it like that would be as disappointing as Season 8. He needs to learn to lean on others and not just do everything on his own. Victory over the Others needs to be earned by ALL of Westeros together, and fighting together could bring acceptance for the Wildlings and Unsullied in their new homes. Speaking of the Unsullied... can Dany heal castrations? ;)

Knight Revan

Have you ever seen or played Asura's wrath? The moment where Axel gets ganged up on reminds me of Asura fighting the endless hordes and getting fucked up

Lord Sesshomaru

Me: What the fuck is going on? 🤨 Me again, remembering Dinosaurus' conversation with Mark: 🤯🤯🤯 Holy Doctor Anders and his explanations about how Viltrumites fly 🙏🏻 While Axel was getting beaten up for the first time in 20 years, I wondered if he'd meet the "Corpse Queen" 🤔 Btw great turn of events ❤️

thevolunteer

I disagree with the idea that the Viserion killing spear could have gone through Valyrian steel as y he Others are shown to be baffled by the material, and have shown no counter to it. I’ll live with it though.

Cameron Burchett

Viltrumite aren’t weak to magic, that’s a Kryptonian thing. Also, I’m not impressed by this direction. The Others ARE pushovers if you have Valyrian steel or dragonglass. Also, canonically they have nothing resembling that scream.

SylverIron

Finally something knows a Viltrumites weakness. ....also ruh roh.

William

I disagree with some of what you said, but I do agree this was extremely well written and the joint battle will be very beneficial for Westeros.

William

Same, I don't for a second think that the spear would go through valyrian steel in Canon, but I dont see it as any big loss for this story to have changed that detail, I would have liked it MORE if he was stabbed in his armpit or the back of the knee or something thats hard to adequately armor, but I definitely like this chapter anyway.

BarryManiHigh

Axel is really going to be kicking himself if this encounter is what causes the white walkers and wights to start advancing on the wall.

Fireblade974

I'm going to be honest this chapter is hit and miss with me. The wight walkers being able to find the exact frequency to disable him is OK I guess with the clearly setup higher magic AU. The icicle going through valarian steel plate armor is a step to far in my opinion I have no problem with is breaking through his skin and durability but the valarian steel is specifically the counter to the walkers magic. A better way would be have his get stabbed in a joint (armpit for blood loss problem or elbow/knee if you want to give him an amputation he can't heal to up the stakes) that would fix the main problem i had with this chapter.

Peter Lappin

Will you have the corpse queen

ZeroSystem

I'm not going to lie, this one lost me a little bit. You're dumbing him down and giving him a Saiyan's battle instincts, which Viltrumite's kind of do, but also kind of don't have. Making the White Walkers a challenge is totally valid, but this way it doesn't seem like they're a challenge. It just seems like Axel is an idiot. And that's fine, but you've repeatedly hammered home that he's learning from his mistakes to learning to be less of an idiot and advancing in his skills and decision making. But every time a new challenge like Daenerys or somebody else pops up, he makes the same stupid decisions again and again. And for whatever reason this one feels the most egregious. Maybe 3 strikes you're out because this is the 3rd time it's been done. Like, there are ways to make them not feel like a curb stomp and actually be a challenge, expand on them, etcetera. But this just felt clunky as hell and especially stupid for him. Looking forward to what happens next and how this ends up being handled, but the beginning is just rough for me man. Love your work.

pavbpabv

The solution is simple. Just fly faster than the speed of sound.

Orion9137

Axel became a true Viltrumite today. Flew into what he thought would be a cake walk and got humbled hard lol

Kasikan

I figured he'd take an ice spear to the chest, just figured it'd be due to hubris rather than them screeching though. Honestly didn't expect them to be able to make any noise, let alone one that could incapacitate him.

Jeff Roy

The solution is simple, fly around Beyond the Wall fast enough to ignite the atmosphere. Bam. All the Others are now on Fire

Cambrian

funnily enough, the original outline, he did take the ice spear because of hubris hah. He tried to catch it but the aura would have resisted his grasp for the split second needed for the spear to be buried in his chest. but I like this better in the end xD

Kind

Any guesses on that's that song/voice in his head?

Alun Lewis

Oh fuck....Axel just got shanked really bad! And I'm not super confident he'll heal easy if the magic of the ice spear was so hard to overcome to allow him to pull it out 😮 Methinks that Axel's ladies are gonna have words for the Night King....and metric fucktons of dragon fire. Once the issue of the ice spears is dealt with...no losing dragons this time!

VaticToxic

Kryptonians are just as vulnerable to magic as normal humans. That's not really a weakness. Also, have Viltrumites shown resistance to magic?

Ofunu

Right. I often forget their ear weakness.

Markus Antonius

I genuinely forgot the walkers do screech really loud and that’s like the one weakness Viltrumites have

RichterQ87

"Pretty much all of them knew someone who had been long, even if it was on the most basic level." - Guessing this is meant to be 'lost' and not 'long', unless they just really knew a lot of tall people. Apologies for the incoming essay ahead. In regards to the fight, I'm willing to suspend my disbelief on some of it. As some people have said, I don't really believe the ice spears would go through Valyrian Steel armor since those seem to conceptually be made of the same stuff as the Walkers regular weapons, and that was stopped by a Valyrian Steel sword and they've been shown to be stumped by it. I always imagined that's because it's made with dragonfire which is kind of magical, and that goes counter to the Walkers element of supernatural ice. Would have been better if like people said it went through a gap or something in his armor, but it's kind of a non-issue at the end of the day. The scream is a nice, not overly contrived way of having Axel get thrown off his game, even though I don't think the Walkers are capable of anything quite like that in canon but this is a 'fanfic' at the end of the day. Definitely one of the least biggest changes made to the world, but one that also has some of the biggest impact in countering Axel's Viltrumite biology. So far, so good. The main problem I see is this: That shit won't work a second time. This feels less like a permanent weakness that will force Axel to finally lean on other people and work with all of Westeros (or realistically at least Daenerys) to combat it, and more of a sign to Axel to kick things into high gear. When he flew in there, he did the Arrowverse Flash thing of stopping to talk and basically taking it easy, which is what allowed them to get the scream in and eventually the spear. But we all know how fast Viltrumites can fly, and so even with them knowing he's coming (whether that's due to the Great Other or them having seen him ahead of time through their control of the wights), Axel could EASILY kick things into sonic gear and fly so fast that even if they screamed in advance, he'd only be exposed to it for like 0.00001 of a second before he demolished them. This is the inherent problem with all things 'speedster' or people who can move/fly/react ridiculously fast. It's also why the Invincible show is god awful at power scaling, but I digress. The only way I can reconcile Axel not doing that is if the material the spear is made out of hinders Axel's healing ability and makes him weaker at the same time as the Walkers start marching on the Wall. But as far as I know, they can't do that because of the Three-Eyed Raven or whatever else, so I really don't know. Maybe Axel discovers fear for the first time after coming so close to being mortally wounded and gets emotionally paralyzed at the idea of leaving his wives and unborn children behind, but that still wouldn't be 'logical', knowing he could easily have done better if he'd taken things more seriously. TL;DR Good enough set-up, but this needs to be a 'Yes, and...?' scenario. Just the scream alone is not a good enough deterrent, but it's a great start.

William

We have records or dragons dying to fast moving pointy objects, we DO NOT have records of the thus far indestructible magic metal that has been shown to completely cleave through white walker magic, being damaged by white walker magic.

redhawktiger

That was an unexpected and honestly great confrontation

Crispined Glover Potato Snacks

Oh no, hopefully Maester Aemon, who still lives Maiden willing, can heal his great nieces boyfriend. Also, title suggestion: One Other After Another.

VaticToxic

Wouldn't that also start a reaction that kills all life because the atmosphere is needed?

Potato

I really hope you smarten axel up abit

Alun Lewis

Oh...totally forgot to mention something in my previous comment that I want to ensure is noted: you use the word "long" in the last sentence of Paragraph 2 when I think you meant to use "lost"...the part about every surviving Wilding knowing someone who had gone missing due to Walkers and wights.
