A/N: It's been a rough day for Maya…
-x-X-x-
Maya groans as she flops back onto the big flat stone on the cliff’s edge. Her legs dangle over the edge of a rather large hundred foot drop… but it’s not like she’s in any danger even if she does fall. She can fly, after all. Covering her face with her arm, she groans a second time for good measure.
“Today was… such a fucking mess.”
Eve floats down and sits beside her, looking up at the sun shining down overhead as they just… hang out and enjoy the sounds of nature around them for a moment. Finally, the red head gives her a response.
“Well, it could have been worse. The Flaxans got way tougher in just a week. Each of those suits of power armor were on the same level as our heaviest hitters. And they had dozens of them.”
She wasn’t wrong. The Flaxans had gone all out with their third invasion. Waiting over a week instead of just three days had given them an astronomically large amount of prep time and that… that had nearly been Earth’s undoing.
“I think… I think one of the reasons we didn’t suffer casualties today is because they were toying with us at least a little bit. They had us dead to rights and they knew it. For the first time it was they who had the power advantage on top of the numbers. So they could take their time and fuck with us before offing us.”
Sheesh, that was morbid to think about. At the same time though, Maya is pretty sure that Eve is right. During the second Flaxan Invasion, Darkwing, Red Rush, Martian Man, and Rex Splode had all died fast. The Flaxans hadn’t been fucking around then… they’d developed what countermeasures they thought they needed and they’d gone about using them with extreme prejudice.
This last invasion though… they knew they were going to win. Maya remembers the savage grin on her opponent’s face as he’d been pummeling her into the ground. Her face was still sore, even hours and hours later. He hadn’t gone for the kill right away even though he could have… he’d known he had the room to prolong her suffering like the sadistic bastard he was.
“… Of course, the other reason, the main reason none of us died today… were your people. That was them right?”
Maya swallows hard and nods.
“Y-Yeah… they… we are called Viltrumites. My dad told me that an expedition force was coming from his home planet. I guess that’s them. They really kicked Flaxan ass, that’s for sure. And…”
She trails off for a moment, leaving Eve to pick up where she’s left off.
“And based on those three Viltrumites who went through the portal at the end there, they’re going to make sure that the Flaxans don’t come back to Earth any time soon.”
Maya swallows and nods, prompting Eve to look at her sideways.
“… How do you think they’re going to do it?”
“Kregg. Take whoever you need with you and deal with this threat to Earth.”
Her savior’s authoritative words echo through her mind at that question. Maya swallows again, harder this time.
“I’m sure they’re just going to… make the Flaxans see reason. I mean, you tell me how you would respond to three Omni-Mans telling you to stop invading his planet. If the Flaxans don’t capitulate… well, they’d have to be bug-fuck insane, right?”
Eve chuckles in that cute way of hers that makes Maya’s heart sing, shaking her head.
“You raise an excellent point, yeah. Still, there sure were a lot of them. Your people, I mean. Are we going to have forty plus of Omni-Man running around now?”
Maya squirms a bit at that… because obviously she doesn’t quite know. She knows from her father that the Viltrumite Expedition is coming to Earth in part because of her and the fact that she’d successfully awakened her Viltrumite Heritage. But what did that mean exactly? Were they going to go around making more half-human, half-Viltrumites like her? More than likely, yes. But they would also protect Earth at the same time… right?
“… I think that will be up to Cecil to negotiate. He’s the Director of the Global Defense Agency, after all.”
If Eve is dissatisfied by Maya’s copout answer, she doesn’t show it. Instead she lays back on the flat stone right next to her, hands on her belly.
“Yeah, you’re probably right. I’m sure he’s negotiating their help in return for some fake IDs or something right now. If they want to settle here on Earth they’re going to have to have proper documentation, after all.”
Oh, that was a good point. Maya makes a noise of acknowledgment in the back of her throat and for a moment the conversation between the two of them lapses. They just lay there together side by side, soaking in their surroundings and the sounds of nature.
After the invasion was over and the important people had left the battlefield to go negotiate, Maya and Eve had stuck around for a bit longer to help with the cleanup. Eventually though, Eve had invited Maya to go flying and seeing how the remaining Viltrumites kept giving her these intense, slightly uncomfortable stares, Maya had agreed.
They’d flown out of the city and into the wilderness, with Eve leading the way and showing Maya to this spot… one of her favorite spots, she’d said. Maya was honored to have been invited to it… and to get to experience it with the other heroine.
“… You know, I really thought you would have been a shoe-in for the Guardians. I was surprised when they didn’t invite you to join along with me, Robot, and Dupli-Kate. Like, I get that they had three slots and we had three members of the Teen Team left, but at the same time… would it really have hurt to have four new Guardians? It’s not like the roster needs to be a set number or anything like that…”
Blinking, Maya hesitates for a moment before sitting up on her elbows. Eve does the same, giving her a curious look at the sudden change in position.
“Actually… I was a potential recruit for the Guardians. I think they weren’t thinking about it the same way you were though. I think they were only going to invite two of the three of you, originally. Though you were definitely one of them no matter what.”
Its Eve’s turn to blink, her brow furrowing.
“Seriously? But Robot and Dupli-Kate are both great too. I don’t even know who they would have snubbed… I mean, I guess maybe Dupli-Kate… but wait, how do you know you were a recruit?”
“Uh… because War Woman and The Immortal came to me while I was out on patrol and personally tried to recruit me.”
When Eve’s eyes bulge out of her skull at that, Maya gives her a confused look.
“… They said they’d just gotten done recruiting you first…”
Eve is quick to shake her head though.
“I mean, maybe timing wise they had, but it wasn’t War Woman or The fucking Immortal who recruited me! Donald Ferguson, Cecil’s assistant, came to my house and talked to me and my parents about me joining the Guardians. You seriously had War Woman and The Immortal show up out of nowhere?!”
Maya slowly nods, frowning a bit now.
“I mean… yeah? I guess so. If I’m being honest though, I think it was more because of my dad than anything.”
“What? What about him?”
Fortunately Eve knows all about Maya’s father being Omni-Man. It was one of those things they’d talked about in their myriad of chats and hangouts these past few weeks. Shrugging, Maya puffs out her cheeks.
“Well… Omni-Man has never been an official member of the Guardians. Sure, the public thinks he’s one because he shows up at most of their bigger fights and lends a helping hand, but he’s never been much of a joiner. He just hasn’t cared to set the record straight and of course the Guardians and the GDA aren’t about to make a clear distinction when he’s the most powerful hero in the world.”
And Maya isn’t at all biased either. Okay sure, she’s a little biased… but she’s also right. Or rather, she was right. Is her father still the strongest hero in the world if he’s no longer the strongest Viltrumite on planet? Hm…
“Well… damn, I didn’t think of it that way. So what, you think they were trying to scoop you because they couldn’t have your father?”
Huffing, Maya rolls her eyes as she looks up at the beautiful blue sky for a moment.
“I know they were trying to scoop me. In hindsight, it was pretty damn obvious given the two most famous Guardians showed up together to try and pitch it to me. I probably would have said yes too… but my dad showed up at the last second and put a stop to it.”
Eve’s eyes widen all over again.
“Oh wow. That’s crazy, I didn’t know there was bad blood between Omni-Man and the Guardians…”
Maya is quick to shake her head, even though she remembers how angry her father was with War Woman and The Immortal for going behind his back. The next words out of her mouth don’t feel like the entire truth as a result of that memory.
“No… there’s no bad blood, it’s not that serious. He just wants me to train with my own kind and he knew that Viltrum was sending an expedition right behind him to come and settle on Earth. Now that they’re here, I’ll be fighting alongside other Viltrumites and working to get stronger with their help. Of course, I’ll still have plenty of time to hang out with you, I think!”
Eve raises an eyebrow at that last bit.
“Yeah? You think. I mean… I’m a Guardian now and you’re going to be working with your people like you said. I won’t be surprised if we wind up not getting to spend as much time together.”
Oh god, she was right wasn’t she? Maya groans and falls backwards again, once more covering her face with her arms.
“Fuuuck… and to think they got such a bad first impression of me today too…”
“What? What do you mean ‘bad first impression’?”
Peeking out from behind her arm, Maya scoffs up at Eve.
“What do you mean what do I mean? They showed up right as I was getting my ass kicked and my shit pushed in by that bastard Flaxan. I had to be saved by the expedition leader, and then when I finally got to my feet, their first sight of me was me caked in blood… both mine and Flaxan blood. It was disgusting and I probably looked pathetic.”
“Yeah but you fought after that didn’t you? You kept fighting… none of them can fault you for that.”
Maya stays quiet, biting her lower lip as his words replay in her head.
“Good. You are a Viltrumite. Do not falter. Not in the face of these weaklings.”
In that moment his approval had meant everything to her. She had never felt more invigorated as his words had coursed through her and helped to uncover a new well of strength deep within her being. There was just one problem…
“I called the expedition leader, the Viltrumite who saved my life… I called him daddy, Eve.”
Eve half-chokes, half-laughs at that.
“W-What?!”
“I thought he was my actual father! I thought my dad had arrived to save me, to save the day!”
Eve snickers some more, making Maya groan and cover her face with her palms.
“I mean… he was pretty ‘daddy’ wasn’t he? Easily the hunkiest Viltrumite who showed up today. Not to mention he really stood out from the others with that furred cape and the red on his uniform. Plus the way it hugged his muscles…”
Maya can’t help but shoot Eve a mortified look, her hands coming down. Eve, in turn, has a glint in her eye… and after a moment Maya realizes that the other girl is fucking with her.
“Eve stoooop!”
“How can I stop? Look, whether he’s already a DILF or not, I’d certainly love to be the one to make him one if you know what I-eep!”
With a growl, Maya leaps up and grabs Eve by the shoulders, rolling on top of her and pinning her down. She’s careful not to use too much force of course, but she still has the other heroine on her back in half a second, knocking the breath out of Eve’s lungs.
“Your t-teasing me, you witch! I’m seriously over here catastrophizing over my terrible first impression with my people and you’re teasing me!”
Beneath her, Eve squirms for a moment, face aflame and almost the same color as her hair.
“… So what if I am?”
Maya blinks at the change in Eve’s tone and looks down into Eve’s eyes. Then, she looks to Eve’s lips. Imminently kissable lips, one of which is currently sucked between Eve’s teeth.
… She’s kissing the other woman before she knows what’s happening. Maya’s mouth crashes into Eve’s and Eve stops biting her lower lip as she happily, almost giddily returns the favor. Beneath her the red head all but lifts off of the rock, arching her back so she can push her chest into Maya’s as the two of them kiss long and hard.
It’s entirely impulsive on Maya’s part but Eve is reciprocating so it’s not like she’s going to stop any time soon. Instead, the two makeout for a bit before pulling back for air, flushed and red faced.
It’s a little strange to jump from talking about her very masculine savior’s very masculine muscles to kissing another woman… especially when said woman has just been dating a man before his untimely demise. So after a moment, Maya asks a tentative, clarifying question of Eve as she looms over her.
“… Bi?”
Eve blinks and then grins sheepishly.
“Yep.”
“… Same.”
They go back to kissing after that, things very much clarified between them. At least this way Maya could just empty her thoughts and not spend so much time thinking about what her people thought of her… she just hoped they didn’t all think she was some pathetic weakling damsel in distress who couldn’t fight her own battles…

A/N: Just gotta grind out some more levels Maya, simple as that.
Throw me a comment if you can but please leave a Like if you don’t want to, it’s the main metric I use to track whether a story is doing well or not!
