A/N: Eve time!

-x-X-x-

To say the last few months have been a rollercoaster for one Samantha Eve Wilkins would be an understatement. On the one hand, she’d moved out of her parents’ place and gone full-time hero after turning eighteen and graduating.

Everything had seemed like it was looking up for her… and then the Flaxans had killed Rex just when they were talking about maybe moving in together. The only thing that had seemingly been holding them back had been Eve enjoying her life out in the woods, living in the ‘treehouse’ that she’d completely built with her own power. Rex hadn’t really been interested in roughing it even a little bit.

Or so she’d thought, because right after his funeral, Dupli-Kate had confessed that he’d been cheating on her with the multiplying heroine. Eve wasn’t sure why Kate had even told the truth… she could have easily gotten away with it all seeing as Rex was dead. Maybe she really did feel guilty enough to want to tell Eve what had been happening behind her back.

Obviously that news had blunted the grief of Rex’s death a little bit… but not by much. And all of the sudden she’d been stuck on a team with Dupli-Kate, having accepted the invitation to join the Guardians before the other woman’s confession and before she’d even known Kate would be joining the team as well.

It had made things… awkward to say the least. Fortunately, the Guardians were a big team so the number of times they all had to work together were minimal. Especially ever since the arrival of Maya’s people. Suddenly having forty more Omni-Mans on call was… well, it had been a game changer. Even Eve had benefited from it, namely by having a whole lot more time to spend with Maya in particular, rather than being called out to help with every single crisis that only the Guardians or Omni-Man himself would have been able to handle previously.

Speaking of Maya… Eve sees the other woman walking down the hall and immediately perks up. Maya had undeniably been one of the best things to happen to her in these past few months, their ‘friendship’ something Eve had latched onto with all her strength and refused to let go of. She’d drowned herself in the other young woman’s presence, mostly to avoid having to think about Rex or Kate or any of that shit too much.

“Maya! Hey!”

Maya brightens the moment she sees Eve, all but skipping over to her with a broad smile and a glow to her face.

“Eve! It’s so good to see you!”

Eve blinks as Maya hugs her tightly, chuckling and patting the stronger woman’s back.

“You too, Maya. I didn’t know you were back from Mars yet. How was the trip?”

Pulling back, Maya looks blank for a moment before slowly nodding.

“Right… Mars. Because we just got back an hour ago. Fuck that’s a trip.”

Eve furrows her brow in confusion.

“Uh… what do you mean?”

Looking around furtively for a moment, Maya grabs Eve by the hand and pulls her out of the hallway and off to an unused, empty alcove. Once they have some modicum of privacy, Maya leans in close, whispering as she grins.

“Eve, I just got done spending months with Argan over in the Flaxan Dimension. And only ten minutes passed on Earth! We literally got back to Earth less than an hour ago, hopped through the portal to Flaxa, and were gone all that time while practically nothing passed on Earth. It’s incredible!”

Eve’s eyes widen as Maya gushes about the experience. Holy shit, she’d been gone for months with Argan? That… well now, that explained the glow on Maya’s face, didn’t it? Eve can’t help but ask the obvious with a knowing little grin.

“Yeah? And how was he?”

The question would have made Maya blush and stammer like crazy just a week ago, but instead she just puffs out her chest proudly.

“He’s amazing, Eve. Like nothing you can ever imagine!”

Wow. Eve can’t help but ruefully shake her head.

“I don’t know Maya… I can imagine an awful lot.”

Laughing, clearly feeling like a million bucks, Maya shakes her head right back.

“I’m serious. Like, my father was great and all but Argan… Argan is on a whole other level. He completely blew my mind!”

Wait… what? Eve’s smile drops and she freezes in place, even as Maya looks so damn happy. Except, what she’d just said…

“Uh… your father?”

There was no way, right? That was just…

Maya gives her a confused look.

“Yeah? My dad was training me before Argan. Like I said, I love my dad to death but he’s always so busy. Meanwhile, ten minutes on Earth equals months and months of concentrated training time with Argan. It was so nice just being able to not worry about anything else… I’m telling you Eve, the Flaxan Dimension is a crazy resource because of the time dilation shit!”

Oh… Ohhhhh. Eve can’t help but cover her face with her palm and laugh over the misunderstanding. Of course, by doing so she makes Maya even more confused than she already was.

“Eve… you okay?”

“I’m fine Maya. But you really have to work on your wording… for a second there I thought you and Argan went off to the Flaxan Dimension to have sex.”

Maya chokes on her own spit.

“What?! No! Don’t be ridiculous! I don’t need to work on my wording; you just need to get your mind out of the gutter!”

Maybe she did, but even still…

“Maya, I literally asked you how he ‘was’. Come on now, I wasn’t exactly being subtle about what I thought we were talking about. It wasn’t until you mentioned your dad in the same breath that I realized we were talking past each other.”

Maya’s face drains of color and she looks a little green for a moment.

“Oh, gross. You thought… eugh, I might be sick…”

Yeah, that had been Eve’s feelings on the matter as well. Still, now that the misunderstanding was cleared away…

“You seriously spent however many months on Flaxa just… training with Argan? You guys didn’t do anything together, not even in the heat of the moment? What is he, a monk?”

Maya blushes and scowls.

“Not everyone is as horny as you seem to be all the time, Eve. Yes we did nothing but train. Argan isn’t a monk, he’s just a gentleman. And he gets really, really focused on things… in this case, on training me above all else. I didn’t mind that one bit, okay? I wasn’t lusting after his body the entire time or anything like that. Besides, it worked too! I’m so much stronger and faster now!”

A grin spreads across Maya’s face before Eve can formulate a response to… all of that.

“In fact… what do you say we head down to the obstacle course, huh? Let’s see how I do this time. And if I manage to cut my previous time in half without getting hit… let’s say you’ll owe me a reward~”

Its Eve’s turn to blush a little at the hunger in Maya’s tone and eyes. Well now, it seems like the last several months of celibacy and nonstop training have left her friend-with-benefits with a bit of an appetite… one that Eve was happy to feed into.

“Sure. Let’s see what you can do.”

As Maya cheers and leads them towards the GDA Headquarters’ gym, Eve just shakes her head in both amusement and bemusement. Months and months of training… and they hadn’t done anything together? So strange…

-x-X-x-

“You spent eight months with her and did not bed her even once, Argan?”

Anissa knows that she cannot outright berate her Grand Regent for his actions. Despite carrying his child, she is still subordinate to Argan and his power. And that’s the way she likes it, truth be told. There is no other man for her in the entire universe who can put her in her place and treat her the way she wants to be treated as Argan can.

… That said, she still can’t help but express her shock when Argan informs her of what he and Maya Grayson had done. It was one thing to take her to Earth’s Moon and inform her of their species’ dire situation. But to then take her to Flaxa in order to train for several months while mere minutes passed on Earth and not even try to reproduce was…

“We were focused on training her and making her stronger, Anissa. Bedding did not come up.”

Anissa does not throw her hands in the air in frustration… but damn if she isn’t tempted to!

“How could it not come up? You had just finished telling her about our woes and about how few of us remained. From the sound of things, your story invigorated and encouraged her to want to grow stronger… but how could it also not result in her wanting to assist us in rebuilding our population?!”

She honestly didn’t understand. Was Maya Grayson… defective or something? Only, Argan looks contemplative for a moment before answering her.

“I believe she might have if I had propositioned her.”

… What? Anissa looks at Argan, prompting him to shrug his broad shoulders nonchalantly.

“I did not fail to notice the way her eyes lingered on my form while we trained. We spent months together, after all.”

The urge to try and throttle Argan is as strong as it is fleeting… Anissa chalks that up to hormones from her steadily advancing pregnancy, even as she forces her tone to remain even.

“… And you did not take advantage of her interest? You did not even consider it?”

Argan shakes his head, resolute.

“The purpose of the trip to Flaxa was to train her and make her stronger. I saw no reason to distract either of us with anything else. Besides, I do not know what it would mean for someone from our universe to be impregnated in their universe. What would it mean for the female? What would it mean for the child?”

That… was a fair point. Anissa crosses her arms over her chest, much of her baffled shock and frustration draining away at that explanation. Indeed, while they vaguely understood how things worked between the Flaxan Dimension and their dimension when it came to the time dilation effects, they did not know everything. Not yet. A consequence of most of the living Viltrumites being warriors, not scientists.

Plus…

“I suppose it makes sense. Nolan’s daughter has spirit, but she does not seem like the kind of woman who would enjoy mixing broken bones and constant blood loss with bedding anyways. You were probably right to separate the violence of our training methods from your eventual copulation.”

Argan… hesitates. Up until this point, he has been as solid and steady in his convictions as ever. Hesitation is not something Anissa has ever seen him indulge in before, so she cannot help but notice it now. Her eyes narrow at him and her lips purse together.

“What? What is it?”

After a moment, Argan shakes his head.

“She suffered no broken bones at my hand. There was some external and internal damage at times of course, but she healed swiftly enough. I saw no reason to bring her to death’s door at any point however… it would only have slowed us down while I waited for her to recover.”

Anissa just stares. Argan had… he hadn’t… but he was…

“Are you saying you did not train Nolan’s daughter the way your father trained you?”

She can tell that she fails to completely keep the utter disbelief out of her voice because Argan looks at her sharply before letting out a sigh.

“… No. I did not. I felt such a thing was… unnecessary.”

Those are difficult words for Anissa to chew on. On the one hand, they sound like the words of a weakling. On the other hand, Anissa knows that Argan is not weak. He is the strongest of them and she doesn’t doubt that for a second.

And yet… he had been forged into the weapon he was by his father and to a lesser extent Conquest. He would never have become strong enough to kill Thragg if not for his training, that Anissa believed with all her heart. So why? Why did he insist on coddling Nolan’s daughter?

“Maya Grayson has progressed admirably all the same. Still, I acknowledge that I have been lax in some of my duties since arriving on Earth. If we are to rebuild ourselves, I cannot fall behind. I will contact Holly Haven once more and finalize an arrangement with her so that she may carry my children in exchange for our assistance in accomplishing her own goals.”

Anissa mulls that over for a moment before dipping her head.

“As you say, Argan.”

Their conversation ends soon after that and they part ways. Anissa… Anissa finds herself at a crossroads. She believes in Argan’s strength and conviction. That is why she follows him and why she is pleased to be carrying his child. But at the same time, she can’t help but harbor doubts where his judgment concerning Maya Grayson is concerned.

He had said that the hybrid was ‘progressing admirably’, but she had already started out so weak… Anissa decides then and there that she is going to do something potentially unwise.

She is going to confront the young hybrid herself and find out once and for all if Maya is worthy of Argan’s seed. One way or another, Anissa will judge whether Nolan’s daughter has the potential their Grand Regent sees in her.

If she does, then Anissa will ensure that copulation happens between the two… after all, Argan himself believes Maya would be willing so it should be fine. However, if she does not… well, they would deal with that eventuality if it became an inevitability, Anissa supposed.

8 months yeah argon isn’t even trying to do his “mission” okay 👌 it just comes off like he doesn’t care about anything viltrumite related more then half the time. Other then the fact he’s “becoming human integrated”

demon1234100

Anissas always looking to fuck mark/maya.

mhaj58

Does Maya actually know Anissa? Or is she about to be blindsided with an already pregnant Viltrumite about to come in like a wrecking ball?

Chainsword83

"Anissa has ever seen him indulge in *before before*,". Repeated word boss.

Vincent

Good chapter. Unless I'm completely misreading/misremembering, if Argan does end up taking on Maya in the fashion, I imagine Eve, while she might not jump in immediately, won't be far behind. Also, it would be awesome to include a Vilrumite OC based on Catherine Halsey (Halo). They need someone with a scientific brain.

Chainsword83

"But to then *taken* her to Flaxa". Believe this should be "take" unless Liam Neeson is involved XD

Captain2003Rex

I know that it hasn’t been long enough yet for Anissa to really be showing all that much in her pregnancy, but I just had the mental image of a VERY pregnant Anissa using her belly as a wrecking ball lmao

Chainsword83

Goooodddd... Good. Let the misunderstanding flow through you! "I'm not trying to sleep with your man!" "Why not?! You're being ridiculous Maya Grayson!" "I'm being ridiculous?! Listen to yourself crazy pregnant lady that came out of nowhere!"

Chainsword83

While that'd be cool, it kinda offsets the whole "decimated by the Scourge Virus" plotline. If someone similar to Halseys intelligence had survived the Purge and then the virus, do you really think the Viltrumites wouldn't already have a counter to the Scourge Virus along with plenty of other advancements in the last thousand years?

Chainsword83

Wondering if Maya will give a better accounting of herself than Anissa is expecting. Maybe Maya gets a good hit on Anissas stomach if she isn't obviously pregnant yet and Anissa panicks. Then Argan chastises her for foolishly putting the future of their species at risk.

farlier1

Yeah it's things like this that has me wondering if hes got the full viltrumite viewpoint or not. Because its one thing to not beat the living shit out of her every hour of the week but its another to be completely kids gloves like he is with her. Any other viltrumite parent would be giving broken bones in the training bouts growing up... maybe I'm not getting something though

farlier1

Heh, made a whole comment basically saying the same thing and you already made it lol

McGrundy

Maya's gonna get slapped up by a Viltrumite hopped up on pregnancy hormones. Blood and... other fluids will be spilled.

Dylan Pullock

Anissa's bleating for a beating ! Because confronting maya is definitely and overstep. Though I do find it wierd that she can't logically see laying someone out for weeks or months even if they heal back stronger is worse than just intense training that can be done daily.

Corn The Man

It does make sense they'd have a least one scientist that survived. But out of only 50 survivors that be down to luck. And they may not have been a virologist. And years of specialized knowledge was wiped out in minutes. This individual may not have been their brightest mind, and would have to try to learn the equivalent off all human science and technology just to begin advancing again. With the empire collapseing if that just isn't doable

Vi

I will admit that I find Argan’s characterization confusing, it is clear that he is less bloodthirsty than the other Viltrumites but I feel like he’s less motivated towards his repopulation goal than I’d expect? I suppose when you live forever you can take things slow lol

Corn The Man

For just half a second both Eve and I the reader thought some very strange thoughts. The statement was there but the logic didn't logic in the end. Good misunderstanding tho I love that kind of misdirection. It's our own minds fault.

McGrundy

Eight months might be a little egregious "time skip" to have happen off-screen, but the logic of not trying to impregnate Maya makes sense, because who knows what the physiological consequences of birthing a Viltrumite in the Flaxan universe would be? Also, Argan's a bit of an autist. He's hyperfixated on testing the limits of Maya's potential.

Chris Cyrus

That’s true but I think it’s the fact he comes off like a normal human trying to be a good viltrumite rather than a thraggs son viltrumite learning to be like a human.

Doug Bowman

Going full retirement for Conquest is one thing, but he's ready to progress without standards too? I get Nolan going soft, but Argan?

Inirlan

I think Vitrumites might be pandas. Although basically being angry flying super-elves also does also work. Either way, compared to 1 new offspring over 1000 years species wide, Argan might as well be breeding like a rabbit compared to the old pace.

Ian

Is this a soft launch for the lineage reveal? By beating Maya up, they discover her lineage? Thanks for the chapter!

RichterQ87

Going from reading the end of the latest 'Somewhere to Belong' chapter with Eve to this story then opening up with "To say the last few months have been a rollercoaster for one Samantha Eve Wilkins would be an understatement" was pretty funny.
