Hi everyone! I hope you’re staying safe and healthy.

I’ve been working a lot on the Arcadia cast scenes for the upcoming update, wrapping up their individual character arcs as we’re headed to the Arcadian act (aka Book 2) finale. That process has forced me to confront the characters’ personalities and arcs as a whole, and how their stories are presented throughout the entirety of Book 2. Unfortunately–and it’s a difficult thing to admit–I’m mostly unhappy with how things have turned out thus far, and it's resulting in a pretty serious disillusionment with AMR as a whole.

As such, I’ve decided to take a pretty extreme measure and rewrite much of Book 2, especially surrounding the dialogues of Tahlia, F, and Yu (in that order of magnitude). I began the process near the start of the month, but was hesitant to announce it as I did not yet know if I would end up going through with it. But the more I worked on it, the more I’ve become certain that this measure is a necessary one.

It will be a difficult, time-consuming process, but I believe that rectifying it here will make the rest of the series easier to write (for me) and easier to read (for a lot of you!). Longpost ahead regarding the details of this process (what will be changed, background of my decisions, etc.) but I’ve tried to summarize the important takeaways as such:

AMR Book 2 is currently undergoing a major rewrite, with a focus on scenes involving Tahlia, F, and Yu.

Patreon charging will be paused until the first pass of the rewrite is complete, and another full update is posted on top of that. Based on my current rate of progress, I expect that it will be around 2-3 months from when this post goes up.

Over the course of these 2-3 months, I will not be uploading any updates which progress the story (my sincerest apologies!). To hopefully help tide things over, I’ll be posting commissioned AMR artworks when I can.

On the nature of the rewrite itself: the main objective is to make the Arcadian cast less overtly evil, while still retaining much of the underlying motivations that makes them tick. The general plot of Book 2 will not change from its current state. However, the presentation of the Arcadian side will hopefully make it easier to side with them, even if one isn’t particularly driven by the desire for vengeance. More on this in the longpost below.

The rewrites will largely consist of dialogue edits, though numerous scenes throughout the book will need to be completely demolished and built from the ground up. Scenes with the highest priority include the scene where Tahlia foils the mage and Eli’s escape, as well as Tahlia’s day-off scene near the start of Book 2.

I expect that it will take several passes before the edit is fully implemented and polished, with feedback from playtesting being put into consideration. The second and subsequent passes will be accomplished concurrently with future updates.

When I had begun ideating and writing AMR as a project, I had a very strong desire to create a tyrannical, unapologetic villain, as I myself felt strongly drawn to these characters in the media I consume. I appreciated it when antagonists were cut and dry (Kafka of Final Fantasy VI is perhaps one of my favorite characters of all time), and I’ve often found myself fascinated by media that allows you to play the villain (my playtime on the Pokemon rom hack Pokemon Rocket Edition, where you play as a member of the antagonist group, likely exceeds my playtime on Pokemon Fire Red, the original game it is built on). It is these preferences that largely inform Arcadia as a concept, though I’ve tried to build it upon more nuanced motivations than its inspirations. For those out there who shared the same inclinations as me, I’d hoped to create for them a clearly antagonistic group–though perhaps one with noble goals–and grant them the option to join in on their escapades.

The keyword here being option.

Enter Book 2, a mammoth which had initially been a 30-50k-word segment at the tail end of Book 1 and has since ballooned completely beyond expectations. A segment in which the choice to side with Arcadia is taken away from you, and you are forced to endure the (arguably morally gray) villainy Arcadia performs on the regular, and endure the cast’s disapproval and oppression should you offer resistance. I tried to grant room for players to voice their disapproval and air their grievances, but in the end, the train is quite firmly glued onto the tracks, and even characters like Eli will begin to admonish you for straying from the path.

I had long justified this as being what makes sense for the world, for the cast, and for the story I want to tell. But ultimately, Book 2 being an absolute slog to trod through for a significant portion of the player base has never been something I wanted when I set out writing this project. For obvious reasons, it damages the playing experience of many players. And pertinently for me as a writer, it backs me into a corner where I have to choose between narrative consistency and game design: do I have the characters stay true to their personality, necessitating for even more unpleasant experiences before Book 2 ends? All this right after the Book 1 cast got a huge, largely positive airtime in the recent interlude?

After much deliberation, I’ve decided in the negative. Rather than compromise on either of these aspects, I’d much prefer the laborious process of rewriting Book 2’s central characters altogether.

That being said, I still believe in the bones of AMR, and the necessity of the plot unfolding as it currently does. The current plot points–and admittedly, the railroading that comes with it–are integral to the story as a whole. But I would like for this process to be less torturous for those not already inclined to side with Arcadia, and perhaps even entice them into trying the Arcadian route out on their subsequent playthroughs.

It will be a tricky balancing act. In the ideal end product, these are the changes that I’d like to bring about to the Arcadian cast:

Instead of being an unapologetic, domineering tyrant, I’d like to nuance her as a character that is both powerful and vulnerable. Much about her will remain the same: she will be embittered by the harshness of her experiences, fostering a cynical worldview and general inability to trust the ercei. However, Tahlia nurses both a great grief and a desperate wish, and both of these will be brought much closer to the surface vs. her current portrayal, where these things are buried deep under a veneer of calm, calculated confidence. She will still be prone to bursts of anger, but these will be informed more strongly by frustration and pain, rather than the desire for control and oppression that she so strongly exhibits in the current version.

This will also strongly modify the presentation of her interactions with the mage. While she will still require that the mage perform to the benefit of Arcadia, and those who refuse to do so will still be met with force, the way she approaches these segments will be colored with more resignation and even guilt, as opposed to the current default of absolute callousness.

The current Tahlia keeps her cards close to her chest and reveals little until she absolutely has to (which basically has yet to happen in the current demo). This makes anyone who would sympathize with her background and story unable to do so until the end of Book 2/start of Book 3. In the planned edits, she will be more willing to slip more of her story and motivations through the cracks, hopefully offering some explanation as to the drastic nature of her actions.

The changes that will be made to F are more superficial, having much to do with how much of their true thoughts they let rise to the surface. They will still hold a great amount of initial dislike for the mage and generally disapprove of their choices in Book 1. However, much of this will be kept to themselves. They will be icy and grumpy at the beginning of Book 2, contrary to their current overt antagonism and propensity for low-hanging insults. They will also put forth more significant effort in trying to understand the mage’s point of view, and more willing to reassess their long-held beliefs surrounding the unsalvageable nature of the ercei.

Yu will undergo the most minor changes in this edit. Most of what will be changed has to do with their motivations for being so staunchly in Arcadia’s corner. Currently, they are driven purely by belief that Arcadia’s cause is a just, necessary evil. In the edited version, their decisions will also be informed by sympathy for Tahlia (and F, to a certain extent). Little else about the character will change; they will still be the playful, flirtatious, and occasionally honorable rogue you’ve known them to be.

I apologize once again for the delays in Book 2’s progress. I hope that the rewritten version of Book 2 will be worth your generous patience, and that it will streamline your experience with the series as a whole.

That about wraps it up for this announcement. As always, thank you for supporting the development of A Mage Reborn.

I just know this is going to make me struggle to pick a side now, but I'm here for it 👀

As a reader, I do love the book now, but also really love forward to the changes you will make! I didn't realize I was in such a minority group siding with the Arcadian group--literally Saine is the only one who gives the majority of my MCs pause--but I just wanted to say, from your Team Arcadia fans, that I love them a whole lot!

Meg

I’ve always been leaned a little more Arcadian-sympathetic, since they as a people have been through a lot, so I’m super excited!! As always of course, please take care of yourself first and foremost! No worries if this takes longer than expected or you hoped for—your sanity and health is way more important, and we’ll all be thrilled for the game regardless <33

Take all the time you need for this. For what it's worth you succeeded in making me love Arcadia and Tahlia as a character and joining their cause right from the start. We do share the same inclinations there haha. That said I understand your reasoning here and the points you bring up. For those who are not keen on joining them it feels they are forced without a real choice. I'm also really glad that Tahlia will get some character development. I know I was in the minority in liking her but when it comes to actually picking sides the poll on the forum showed a pretty even result (18% Arcadia, 17% Param) in both groups and neutral of course the highest. I also feel like when the time came for uniting against a common enemy both factions would see the other in a new light and what they bring to the table It's a funny coincidence but the author of The Exile said that their original plan for the Queen/Mother was to be a pure villain and antagonist with no redeemable features and how much she has evolved from that to a much more complex character. It mirrors what you mentioned now about the changes in plan for Tahlia's character.

Take your time Adam! I don’t come in often but just wanted to say that I know for me personally having played a mage who was resistant to Arcadia, the Arcadians taking the ‘honey’ vs. ‘vinegar’ approach would feel better, especially after all MC has been through. Making Arcadia more alluring, not only with their cause (which seems like a lot of players may be on board for in general) but with the key characters making it harder for resistant MC to dig their heels in even further;and if it doesn’t out right switch them, gives them pause. I think even as a manipulation tactic, if Thalia *wasn’t* being sincere, killing them with kindness so to speak after the terrible things that happened to them and perhaps giving them a show of good faith (regardless of what MC does with that) instead of immediately going to the threat of “collaring” them (the whole reason one could argue why they got bbq’d) if they defect or disobey. On that note: Wondering if with high enough affinities/friendships, MC could sway others to abandon or also just think twice about enacting Arcadia’s end goal (sounds like in F’s case there’s more a step towards that acceptance at least of MC’s potential resistance) Of course not derailing your plans for the next book or the finale! but just to plant the seed of doubt that maybe this isn’t the only way to go about things. On THAT note, would also be interesting in order to build a sense of rapport for the Mage to discuss what happened to them with the characters if they wish to unpack some of that trauma (might be a good opportunity to reestablish or establish MCs feelings towards the Parami gang esp if they were romancing Leon or Ilya) and open up that way to their new comrades (also if you rack up enough points for F or Y or Eli to confess their feelings and MC doesn’t feel the same bc of prior involvement with Leon or Ilya or is confused about how they feel because of that involvement, I think it may be a nice time for MC to mention that as a reason why they don’t reciprocate or can’t because they don’t have closure/still have feelings for someone else) Apologies for the long post but just some thoughts to take or leave or whatever you wish! 🤗 good luck with the rewrite and hope you’ve been well!

Good luck with the rewrite! I'm on team Param but I'm hoping some of these updates will help me like Arcadia more than I do. Please don't stress yourself out, and take all the time you need!

J J

Sorry I also meant to ask, will those instances of Eli admonishing you be changed at all? I really like Eli but it just felt wrong coming from them

Happy Succubus

I am happy to hear you are taking the leap and doing rewrites rather then abandoning AMR. So many just give up when they hit something that causes them to lose their love for their projects and it makes me sad when that happens. AMR is by far one of my favorite IFs currently out there and I am really looking forward to these future rewrites!!

Rhaygan

This actually makes me incredibly happy. I am in that portion that grit my teeth and bear it, but have absolutely no sympathy or allegiance to Arcadia. I am excited about a rewrite, no matter how long it takes. I am honestly always impressed with your willingness to listen to your fanbase and take their opinions to heart. AMR is one of my favorite series, and Eli sits firmly at the top of my favorite RO of all time list. I can't wait to see where it goes from here!

EvilChani

Both my MC and I hate Param now--especially Leon, since she was in love with him and he murdered her, so this doesn't really affect her decision to stick with Arcadia (for now, anyway). Still, it will be good if the Arcadia crowd is a bit less evil-leaning. She had intended to romance F, but on my last run, him saying he wished she was dead kinda killed that deal, so she'll probably end up going no romance. Take all the time you need for the rewrite. I'm curious to see how it'll turn out. My MC didn't really care about Tahlia one way or the other, though she resented being controlled and intended to kill the woman once she got her revenge on Param. Be interesting to see if Tahlia can be a little less Emperor Palpatine and a little more Magneto.

Pixiuu

To be honest, this makes me kinda happy too. I have A hard time relating to Arcadia and feel they’re a bit too evil haha. For my MC it’s hard to just forget Param/change his view for an old injustice/revenge (granted what happened and treatment of arcadians were horrible) of a bloodline and country he doesnt really feel a connection to/kinship with. 🤔🤔 But more importantly is that you’re happy with AMR and feel inspired to work on the story. 😁😁💖 Take your time, don’t stress and breathe! I believe a large majority of us doesn’t mind the wait. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, as they say. 😉

Clueless

In all honesty, I thought AMR series was dead. Glad that wasn’t the case! Now that you mentioned it, I kind of hated the fact that the story made an MC like/endorse the Arcadia group to the degree that the second book forced. The start of the second book kind of suggested that we could resist them vehemently, but the more story progressed the less and less resistance was an option. If the choices of the second book allowed me to assassinate Tahlia, I’d have taken it without a second thought, so I’m really glad that you’ll be expanding our options to show the distaste towards the Midnight barracks. Now, I don’t know if you have the time or want to implement this, I wouldn’t blame you in the least - take this only as a suggestion. Personally, I’d love if you included options to be more subtle during operations, more actions as a saboteur rather than frontline fighter or support (Alchemy magic might be a good route for this). I had love for these kind of characters since forever. I'm ecstatic with these news, the AMR series have been my favorite WIP for awhile.

While we're on the subject of a rewrite. Could you delete or have an option to skip the backstory of the first phantasma that we get after the rebirth. It just has zero plot relevancy and it doesn't add anything to the theme of a story and I don't care enough about the character to read through his backstory. Recently in Vinland Saga 2nd season there was 3 backstories of characters within the span of 4 episodes but they made you care about those characters first and then they added a backstory and aside from that it added to the theme of the story or had plot relevancy and it was relatively short. However, that character was going on and on and on about his story, and how he got there and at the end of it all he didn't even stick around or the choices that was made there didn't matter and his backstory didn't have plot relevancy or added anything to the theme, so it felt like it didn't matter at all.

Heather Dodds

Best of luck on the rewrite! I am excited to see the new direction.

MrMervyn

I'm really happy to read this. I've loved this story since I first played it but I've struggled at times with how the narrative treated Arcadia. I don't have a problem rolling with 'morally grey' but having an oppressed people - survivors of a genocide - led by someone like Tahlia as she was originally portrayed, that didn't sit quite right with me. So I'm happy we are getting some insight into her motivations. Best of luck with the rewrite and take all the time you need! I imagine it must have been a very difficult decision but I believe it'll pay off. Looking forward to the next update, whenever it comes! <3

Platina

All the best with the rewrite! I am excited to see the changes you have planned for Tahlia, I really do think it'll make her more sympathetic and a better character. Though I do hope F doesn't change too much, I really like them the way they are right now! Take all the time you need with the rewrite, and don't be too hard on yourself! I love the story the way it is, and I'm sure whatever changes you make will only serve to make it better! All the best!

Natha Ng

Best of luck to the re-write! The plan sounds really exciting, I am definitely looking forward to the changes! Make sure to take proper care of yourself too and don’t stress too much!! 🩷 Also, happy pride month, hell yeah!!! Also I personally don’t mind being charged during the rewrite (I noticed that payment has been paused lately) since a rewrite is a major project and you still need to be rewarded~

Blue_Shayde

Honestly, probably for the best with regards to Tahlia. I've been unable to sympathize with her as anything but a callous tyrant and slavemaster. And I would literally drop the Arcadians and run back to Leon in an instant if allowed. I've no real love for Arcadia, specially if they intend to harm the rest of the world or most importantly, my Param babies. (who my MC does not hate or hold a grudge towards) I think the only Arcadian my MC would like and tolerate right now is Yu and Eli. But I've hated being forced storywise to actually help Arcadia get so powerful that it could seriously harm the rest of the other kingdoms. (specially Param) While my MC may ultimately care and push for peace between Param and Arcadia in the end; protecting Leon, Saine, and Ilya will always be his greatest priority. Ultimately, if its to help Arcadia stand on their own two feet as a nation...sure. But help them start a war and kill thousands over some ancient grudge? Hell no.

Laurel Meyers

Hope you’re doing well and the rewrite is going well! I’m happy to hear about the changes! I always felt that Mir was a good straight up evil villain that was a product of where she came from and where she currently was, a loose cannon that didn’t have much to reel her in! Where as the arcadians were supposed to be more of sympathetic villains I’ve also been at odds with my feelings about Arcadia and the Arcadian crew, I always felt that I would absolutely stand with Arcadia in their search for freedom just not in the way Thalia seeks because I simply didn’t agree with her viewpoints of the world, I understand why she has them and where they came from just that it’s a very dangerous viewpoint for a leader to have especially when that could lead to encouraging things such a F’s violence and deep hatred or Mir’s just overall behavior! I never felt like I was really able to express that opinion though, that I feel for Arcadia and that I even believe Leon’s brother may have been trying to take real steps in that direction but that it was people like Thalia and Mir who destroy that chance because their desire (or what seems like their desire) for revenge and causing pain to those they deem guilty is more important to them and that at least most of my MCs refuse to follow that Sorry it’s kind of a late opinion but hope it helps in any way ❤️

Clueless

Heya! So, I probably shouldn't be writing this, but the curiosity had been killing me. I want to preface that I don't want to put any pressure or be rude, afterall, an artist needs time to finish their product! I just want to say that any sort of news on AMR would be great, is it on hiatus, is the writing going slower than usual, or if you don't feel like writing the book at all anymore. I fully understand that you have a life, so by no means feel like I'm pressuring you into releasing early or even releasing anything. Just it would be cool if you shared any news on the writing itself.

J J

Hi! I hope you're doing well. I don't mean to sound impatient but are you able to confirm you're still working on AMR? Its been a while since we've heard from you and I was getting a little worried. Obviously take all the time you need but I'd love to hear even just that things are still in progress!

J J

Sorry to bump again but I saw the patreon paused again. Would you be able to acknowledge if AMR is cancelled?

pinkinfested

I'm sad to see the patreon has been paused again. We're coming on 8 months since the hiatus started, and I really want to be clear, there's no rush with any kind of game update. But any kind of word on the progress would be great. Even if it's just saying AMR is canceled, or a single sentence saying you're still working on it. Hope you're doing alright

rez

i hope you had a happy new year! really all i wanna know is if you're alright? hope everythings okay :') heres to good health and blessings in 2024 💕 take care of yourself always!

K Douglas

Still alive bro?

Agnes

I hope you're doing okay :( we miss you

Chrys

hi! its been a while since the rewrite announcement, and we haven't heard anything since. i don't mean to add pressure or anything, it's fully alright to take as much time as you need, but i think i'm not alone in asking if we could get any news on progress at all, even if it's that you haven't been able to work on it much or that the book is cancelled entirely. in any case, i hope you are doing well!

L. Gonzales

Hope you're alright. Been a while since the last update. Going on a year next month. No rush on development. Take the time you need. Just hoping to hear from you.
