Adric was already on thin ice with the fans after his horrible sexism in the last episode, so there was absolutely no redeeming the character for many after he's convinced to support the villains by a couple minutes of conversation here. And to this day he has an unfair reputation of doing this in every single story he's in, despite this being the only time it happens and the writers themselves regretting it. The really curious thing is that a reasonable explanation for his stance, that this is by far the closest thing he's experienced since joining the Doctor to the society where he grew up, was staring them in the face but they simply leave it on the table, and instead it comes off like he just has the same god complex aided by getting to shout down a woman. At least the Doctor gets to give him a brutal talking-to so it becomes clear we're not supposed to agree with his sexism, rather than just being a dated "That's just the way men talk" thing.

As you mentioned, Adric already earned the fans’ ire in the first half of the story, now this half of the story makes things worse. Like I said last week, I feel bad for Matthew that he got the hate that he got for Adric’s actions in this story, which are the only such time he acts in the manner he did, and the fans never let him hear the end of it to the point where he has as you noted, an “unfair reputation of doing this in every single story he's in, despite this being the only time it happens” which at least the writers’ acknowledge how unfortunate it all ended up being. And as you observe, there is the moment when the Doctor gives Adric the dressing down, clearly showing that the sexism Adric expresses is very much wrong. Thus, showing the audience that the behavior is not to be emulated, rather than having a “boys will be boys” mentality, which is quite refreshing for a show of the time to express.

That must be that usual, overly vocal gang of anorak fans that condemn Adric for one sexist remark or a misjudgement of character. I take it this angry mob have never themselves uttered something they regret or been hoodwinked by somebody at one time or another? Notice how Tegan, the most sexist of all the companions, hurling around her 'chauvinist' insults whenever things don't go her way, gets away unscathed from the anoraks collective vitriol. She's a hypocrite, the most egregious example of this is that weve just seen her trying to pilot the TARDIS, not giving a shit about the Doctor, Nyssa or Adrics welfare, just to save her own skin yet she has the cheek to accuse someone else (who has yet to join the TARDIS crew) of running away!!

"What are you going to do?", "I haven't the slightest intention of telling you until I know if you're with me.", Adric and the Doctor, "Four to Doomsday" I like the conversations between Adric and the Doctor, and between Tegan and the Doctor in this one. And we get disagreements between companions - it's all good character stuff. Now, I love K9 but his arguments with the Doctor never lasted very long. But Nyssa (who I really like) was a bit out-of-it in these last two episodes - betwen being hypnotized and an extraction-helmet stuck on her head. But she comes through, when the Doctor is about to have his head chopped off, with a nifty use of the sonic and a pencil. Hooray! When Bigon was showing the Doctor around the ship, there was a comment about the androids attempting to find equations to let Monarch achieve his goal of moving faster than light. I was reminded, while watching it now, of the Krillitanes getting the children to solve their problem in "School Reunion". In the space-walk sequence, Peter was balancing on a office chair which was being pulled across the CSO set by a rope. It looks quite crude these days, but Peter was quite proud of the effect. They joke on the commentary track how this was something the production people wouldn't have been able to convince Tom to attempt. But when you know about the chair, the rope looks - well, just like a rope laying on the ground. Throwing the cricket ball was a fun idea. I don't think would work exactly as presented, but it's quite entertaining, isn't it. And that's why we watch Who. I do like the scene with Tegan alone on the TARDIS getting frustrated. And I really like Bigon in this story.
