The fans were pretty hard on this story at the time, with it coming dead last in a magazine poll about the season, but its reputation has steadily grown ever since and you'll often see it described as the first great Five story after the first two went through some serious growing pains after losing the massively beloved Tom Baker. Janet Fielding and Matthew Waterhouse have also both always named it as their favorite of their stories.

"An apple a day keeps the, er ... never mind.", The Doctor, "Kinda" Well, we finally got to this story. I should say that I don't go out of my way to watch people feel uncomfortable - but I'm also a completionist and I consume all the "Doctor Who" material that I can. So I'll skip over any possibly uncomfortable content here and just recall the glorious weirdness of "The Wherever" world, and the wonderful contrast between the Kinda society and the base occupants. Oh, and I like the pith-helmets of the base uniforms. I'm super familiar with this story because, for a while, a block of this season was the only Who content I had. I had bought a new video recorder to record from the TV transmission and there was a long wait between seasons. So this story and the rest of the season got re-watched a lot. I love Todd (played by Nerys Hughes) and the way she works with the Doctor. Nerys, was well known for her role in "The Liver Birds" TV series. But she was also later in a "Torchwood" episode - she was Rhys's mother in the marriage episode "Something Borrowed". That was a memorable part! BTW: another "Torchwood" tie in. Jack mentions the Mara in "Small Worlds" - the story about the little girl and the fairies. Richard Todd (who played Sanders - the dome commander) was a veteran British actor from the 1940-60s - he had had an Oscar nomination for "Best Actor". There is a story that at one point Matthew Waterhouse (Adric) tried to demonstrate how Richard Todd should act in a scene (remember, Richard Todd had a "Best Actor" Oscar nomination!) - utterly horrifying the other actors. Oh, and yes - Janet absolutely kills it in that scene.

Jess I'm so happy you're enjoying this story! It's a favorite of mine, even though I think it was what gave me a snake phobia. I've been looking forward to your reaction to this for years but I wasn't sure you'd like it.
