This script was originally written for a murder mystery series where it wasn't used, and the writer just happened to find it at the bottom of a drawer and gave some minor rewrites when this season was running two episodes short. The cast all hated it, and the DVD commentary is an absolute blast with them all mercilessly mocking it. Though oddly enough, it was also John Nathan-Turner's favorite of his time on the show.

"Why do I always let my curiosity get the better of me?", The Doctor, "Black Orchid" I really like this story. And I was hoping you would find things to enjoy in it. Ok, this plot isn't all that deep - but I love TV dramas/whodunnits in this historical period. Perhaps it's a bit stereotypical but it's fun and it's the first historical story without a science-fiction concept since, I think, "The Highlanders". (And perhaps a bit too stereotypical with the reference to "the hunt" - fox hunting.) As you mentioned, it's really nice to see the TARDIS crew getting to enjoy themselves - well, until the finale. And the period music and the dancing. Go, Tegan (Janet)! - that was great! And great to see your reaction to it. Go, Peter as well - we get to see him playing cricket - finally matching his outfit! And because of the cricket, the story writer can get away with a nice misdirection: they mention "The Master" and "the other Doctor" - and we, Who viewers, know what that would mean. But it turns out it is just a reference to an extremely famous cricket player - Dr. W. G. Grace. The equivalent of him in U.S. baseball would probably be Babe Ruth. Incidentally, this very Doctor Who episode is referenced on the wikipedia page for W. G. Grace - Doctor Who gets everywhere! And go, Sarah in the double role of Nyssa and Ann. She did say it was a favorite story of hers - but that there were lots of costume changes. And at least Matthew gets a practical plate of food. It's a bit difficult to see, but the weather during the outside filming was quite bad - very windy and dark and rainy. The field for the cricket game looks particularly soggy. And the wind picked up during the scenes on the terrace. I used to quiz people on a discord channel with Doctor Who locations presented in Google Street View and they had to guess the story. Here's the one for this episode (you already know the answer - it's "Black Orchid") but do you recognise the exterior location from the episodes? https://goo.gl/maps/MigGzPraWkHwjQAW9 "As a boy, I always wanted to drive one.", The Doctor on steam engines, "Black Orchid" So sweet.

Sorry, but this was NOT originally written for some 'murder mystery' series, that is simply Peter Davisons assumption as he loathes this story - the main reason for his dislike of it is he doesn't like how he looks in the Pierrot costume.... how vain can you get? Terence Dudley had already penned 'Four to Doomsday' for this season and is the author of another story later on. Where do you get the idea that the cast all hate this story?!! Sarah Sutton cites it as her most favourite from all her time on the show and Matthew Waterhouse said he likes it. It is only Davison who goes on and on and on about how crap he thinks it is apart from his cricketing scenes where he will tell anyone in earshot that he bowled someone out on camera (yawn). I think this is a superb little skit (as does the majority of fandom) and it is a nice change of pace for what is to come.
