Anyone's thoughts on this one are going to depend entirely on what they think of Lwaxana, since unlike most of her appearances she's 100% of the story with nothing else to distract from it. And unfortunately, I've never been able to get very attached to her, so it's pretty much a wash for me. The one major point of interest is knowing one of the fish guys is Mick Fleetwood, who's a huge Trekkie and jumped at the chance to play even an unrecognizable role like this (actually pretty reminiscent of the Stormtrooper cameos in Disney Star Wars). At least his famous height lets him be a bit intimidating. And boy, wouldn't it be handy if Troi could have even the barest fraction of her mother's abilities, instead of just "sensing anger" from someone screaming at them?

I am amazed, Jess. There was no Geordi in this episode, and you didn’t even say one word about that. I didn’t expect that one. I do continue to love your credits tradition of placing your hand over your heart when we see LeVar’s name in the credits. Now to the episode. It has been some time since last we saw Lwaxana. And Mr. Homn, of course. Fair enough that you say that you don’t entirely know what to make of this episode. I will say that it is a highlight of Next Gen that especially when focusing on character driven episodes, the tone can range from comedic to dramatic. Here, it’s comedic with Majel having a ball. Carel continues to be quite the scene stealer as Mr Homn. I love how you live for Mr. Homn getting tight as a boiled owl in this episode. I live for it as well, and given Lwakana’s antics, I don’t blame him for taking that course of action. Certainly, it is impressive when he knocks back the entire bottle of, I assume Romulan Ale in one pull. Or was it Listerine? Didn’t think of Listerine myself until you said that; probably because I go for plain mouthwash that’s not minty. I hear you on loving seeing Deanna and how she is when her mom’s around. Marina does great work with that. I laughed WAY too hard when Picard has Data chatter away during the dinner. Yeah, the discomfort you had was shared by me. Yes, “No” means “No” which the men should have said, Lwaxana going through Betazoid menopause or not. When Riker offers Picard congratulations, if I were Picard, I’d yell, “Shut the FUCK up, Riker!!” Thus, it is humorously cathartic when Lwakana turns her attention to Riker, making me say, “Yeah, now that the foot’s on the other hand, it doesn’t feel so good. Does it, asshole?” I don’t blame Picard for hiding out in the Noir world of the holodeck. Shame the program was stuck in Chandler’s Law mode. Could have used more Robert Costanza as I like him. He’s a good character actor. The reminder of the statement of Data being from South America to explain his appearance, makes me go, “We’re sticking with that?” I’d have booked it out of the holodeck so fast when Lwaxana is distracted by Rex, who, by the way, when you said, “I do tend to love a Rex.” made me say, “KNEW you were going to say something like that, Jess.” Concerning the other plot of the fish folk, complete with a cameo from Mick Fleetwood as I see Ryan has mentioned as well. Your response to Wesley’s lines was similar to mine. I also found it odd. It feels like the writers were trying to show Wesley is not the perfect wunderkind that they tried to make him originally, and I don’t object to that necessarily. The lines he had just felt off, out of character. In any event, the fish folk were assassins that Lwaxana exposed lickety-split, shared reaction on that one. So, though I do agree that this isn’t one of the strongest episodes, it is memorable. Vastly preferable to last week’s episode. And it was a pretty good reaction. I appreciate what you said at the end. There are going to be those occasional episodes that just aren’t going to hit the mark, yet you still find things to enjoy, you maintain positivity, and you’re honest about how you felt about it. All of that is always much appreciated, Jess. Thanks for the fun reaction.

Holy Shiitake Mushrooms? I haven't heard that one before! Bing!

You know, when I first watched the series back in the day, I was never fond of Troi's mother or the holodeck stuff, but on rewatching them, they are mostly a lot of fun, including with this episode here. This is obviously a slower episode focussing on the characters and having some shenanigans with them, and the actors pass it off beautifully. Majel Roddenberry is a hoot as Lwaxana, bringing chaos wherever she goes. Patrick Stewart is great too, as he recovers from his dinner with Lwaxana to turn the tables on her, then hides in ths holodeck for the remainder of the episode! My only issue with the holodeck stuff is that it does go on a bit, and Picard could have got what he wanted by riding his horsey in the mountains, instead of having to go through all that nonsense with the 40's schlock novel stuff. Mr Homn is indeed a legend, stealing every scene he is in, without uttering a word and I always like when they add humour (or irritability) with Worf, the way he carries on about how "handsome" the fish people are! Jonathan Frakes plays a very cheeky Riker in this one too, and I caught that as did you Jess, the way he gives Wesley the stink eye, when it was him dishing the dirt on Lwaxana in the first place!! In the end though, nothing really gets resolved, Lwaxana moves on to terrorise some other poor sods, and the crew resume their journey, awaiting bigger and better adventures, but just for the high jinks here, this is a decent episode to enjoy.
