You started out the reactions to the season of House of the Messy with a dress that was FIRE, and now conclude the reactions to the season with a terrific green and black combo. Rocking the fashion, delivering the exceptional thoughts and insights alongside the superb reactions. You are KILLING IT, Jess. I share you being ok with the buildup over action this episode. I’m fine with that. Now to specifics of this episode. Start with Rhaena. I kept shaking my head at her apparent lack of foresight in that she could very well get herself killed before even getting to the dragon. We play the waiting game to see if the season opens with her dying terribly trying as that’s where my money’s at. You are more hopeful and indeed, you’re rooting for her to get the dragon. I’m not necessarily, but I like your vote of confidence. The Tyland plotline was interesting. If I were him, I would not be thrilled about the lady’s proposition, I’d say, “Ha-ha. No. NO!” Similar reactions to Alyn, who’s actor’s name is Abubakar Salim since you asked, acting his ass off in that one scene. Made me say, “I like him.” Jacaerys continues to pout, oh, sorry, he is not pouting as princes do not pout, meaning his face just naturally looks like he sucked a lemon. Regardless, he is quite irked over the situation about Addam, Hugh, and Ulf. Seems quite interesting for him to have such a response seeing as the whole operation of finding people to ride the dragons was his idea. Clearly, he didn’t think the matter through. Because of course he didn’t. Just as of course Baela’s words aren’t going to sink in for Jacaerys. Because he’s a stupid, short sighted little twerp. They are now advocating the killing of innocents. And to be clear, Rhaenyra doesn’t give two shits for how many people was it that she let get burned by the dragons? No? Pity. To the surprise of no one, Aemond did not raise a white flag. Helaena had fantastic scenes, shared love of her greater time in the spotlight. Loved her pointing out how the blockade isn’t even the Greens’ fault, which Alicent doesn’t disagree, whilst noting that the people expect the crown to do something about it. I anticipated your protectiveness of our dear Queen Helaena. Your threat to rip out Aemond’s other fucking eye if he again so much as lays a finger on Helaena as he did, I’d expect nothing less, Jess. And he should be grateful to you if that transpires. After all, he can claim that he can still ride Gargantuan Grandma Dragon blind; get him a hell of a reputation. Good read on Aemond. Helaena dropping the spoilers (presumably) was bone chilling, your reactions and insights about that being spectacular. My brother made the comment that, “Helena playing 29D chess was cool.” to which I said, “Oh yeah.” And you say that you are Team Helaena. As I’ve stated, I’m a Team Green man in general, and more specifically a Team Alicent man myself. I stand by your being Team Helaena, Jess. Concerning Simon lurking in the corridor. Well, of course Simon is lurking in the corridor. He’s compiling documents on all of them, whilst dressed very, very fiercely as you noted. The man is a diva, and my brother and I live for it. And all three of us are agreed that we NEED more Simon as Simon going forward. I fail to see how Daemon didn’t anticipate Rhaenyra showing up. What did he just think she’d be at Dragonstone singing Someday My Prince Will Come or something and not lose patience with his absence? Then there is that one big scene. See, I’m going to say that I liked your reaction to the one Daemon scene, and that it got you to the point you had chills. I’m happy for you about that. Preface that. I have yet to hear much in the way of fan response to it, though I’m sure I’ll be called a fucking asshole as I saw the scene, processed, and at the end of Daemon’s big scene of bending the knee to Rhaenyra, rallying the troops, all with the triumphant sounding music playing, I said, “I’m thinking... Yeah, that whole spectacle did nothing for me.” I don’t know which I dislike more: Daemon’s admiration of Rhaenyra or Daemon’s envy of Rhaenyra. Simon in the background in that scene is me, albeit I perhaps would be more facetious. I did love how you caught Simon there. And now it seems, as you said, Daemon is preparing to leave Harrenhal which is a shame as I was SO looking forward to Lady Rhea appearing to him and going Birdman on our not so good prince by fucking chewing his goddamn ear off. Mayhaps this will be next season if Daemon has a little more time at Harrenhal or if the lingering mental trauma he endured there persists. (He said hopefully.) I was perfectly fine with that arc lasting all season. One thing for sure, that damn prophecy keeps getting misread, it seems.

Now to that big final scene between Alicent and Rhaenyra. My brother noted of Alicent here, “She’s got balls, I’ll give her that.” Similar feelings of not expecting it. Shared assessment of Alicent acknowledging her failings. By the way, the debate of does she deserve to just take off and leave everything behind. She does. After the horseshit she had to put up with, she deserves that. I also like how she calls Rhaenyra out on her hypocrisy of condemning Alicent for shit that Rhaenyra herself did. I indulged in the calling out Rhaenyra on that as well. I share your thinking how unrealistic peace would be at this point. Rhaenyra definitely loses me some when she demands Aegon’s head, when she gave no indication before then that such an act is an end goal. (The rub is that Aegon and Larys have now fucked off, but neither lady knows this.) Ruthlessly pragmatic though she may well be, it seems out of the blue, and it seems she’s wishing to be cruel to Alicent with that. Certainly, I found it to be cruel when Rhaenyra says, “A son for a son.” I got defensive when I noted, “THAT debt’s been paid, Rhaenyra. Your uncle saw to that if you recall, hence your season long tiff.” It really seems to me that at this point Rhaenyra hates Alicent. Or if she does not hate her, she’ll never forgive her. Just like Elizabeth. That is Elizabeth Bennett from Pride & Prejudice. Like with Elizabeth, too proud. Or was she too prejudiced and it was Mr. Darcy that was too proud? I... Well, I can’t remember. Personal feelings aside, Olivia and Emma delivered terrific performances in that scene. An excellent montage to close the season complete with Otto in some sort of pickle, shared reaction there. I caught Rhys being listed in the credits, and I got impatient for him to appear, saying “Ah, now eventually you do plan to have Otto on the, on the House of the Messy, right? Hello? Hello? Yes?” It looked like Otto could use a Rita Hayworth poster, wire cutters, a rock hammer, and/or some of the guys from The Great Escape, pronto. I liked your comments saying how you feel that doing the reaction channel has made you a more patient viewer. We are left with a most ominous and excellent montage, like I said. Worry for most of the characters. Not Alicent. No, they cannot kill her. She will be safe; I am sure of that, what with her being the Salieri of the story. For everyone else, there is quite a dread of things to come being most ugly and messy. We already see the early signs of the danger of Rhaenyra giving Hugh and Ulf the freedom to want. This on top of how everywhere you look in this story, as reinforced in the ending montage, several characters and factions exhibit the belief that they have the freedom to want. And of course, the story is always the same when those with the freedom to want inevitably allow their hunger, greed, and lust for power to become insatiable; when they decide that they deserve to have more than they have and have means to attain more. Everything they want, they call their own, and if they cannot have it, they say that they are not free. They even pretend their freedom should be free, that it has no cost, but the cost is ALWAYS... death. Life for life. Me... or you. Then again, as is expressed in the episode, to die would be a kind of relief. It would be. Even so, I am not in any rush to embark on that adventure, and I would prefer to wait on that until God has decided when I am to shuffle off the mortal coil. All in due time. And indeed, it will most likely be quite some time until we return to this show. Until we do, I just wish to say thank you so very, very much for a wonderful journey shared with you this season, Jess. Your reactions were wonderful, your thoughts and insights more so, and I lived for the fashion. I await the next season with great interest. Until then, thank you for the joy and pleasure of sharing this season with you, Jess.

The really great thing is this is totally different from Rhaena's story in the books, so it's pretty much up in the air for everyone what happens next.

My suspicion is they were expecting to get another ten episodes, and when HBO sprung this on them instead with a writer strike looming, they had to rush through and make as good an ending as they could, even if it meant the season goes full Surf Dracula. It's now been confirmed the show is getting two more seasons and then ending, and much like The Witcher that does seem like a perfectly reasonable length to cover the remaining story, assuming they're able to pace it right. Another suspicion is that Daemon's peek into River's diary was supposed to have a lot more to it with Daenerys going full Bent Neck Lady, but then they couldn't get Emilia back so they were forced to cut it down to this. And you have to wonder just how much detail he got out of it. "We have to do all this stuff so that some day, some random Northern girl will get a lucky hit in. Yeah, turns out that whole Prince Who Was Promised thing was total bullshit. And if you think that's a story that goes nowhere, wait until you hear about everything that happens in Dorne." Also on this subject, I have to point out that you saw Simon as Dionysus in Love and Thunder. After Philosophy Tube has been hyping her appearance for months now, I was starting to wonder if she'd been cut entirely. But this was certainly worth the wait, even if her introduction does give the same vibe as the attempt at a big twist in Terminator Dark Fate, where it feels like the show is shouting at us "Take that, sexist thoughts that no one who'd be watching this in the first place is actually having." I also really question casting a trans woman as someone who apparently prefers male pronouns, though at least there isn't much attention drawn to it. It's been revealed that Rhenyra and Mysaria's kiss was improvised, which makes it a lot easier to accept the lack of follow-up this season, especially with part of it being filmed during the strike. But I certainly hope that them putting it in the actual show means that next season one of them is going to say "I was wondering if you would like to do a sex with me." Speaking as someone who's read Fire and Blood, I have no fucking clue what's up with Otto. And Rhaena's story is also newly invented, taking some material from a character named Nettles who she's apparently been merged with. Which should have some interesting implications next season now that she has her father's gun and a scorching case of herpes. One more interesting change is that in the book, Aegon simply mysteriously disappears at this point and we only learn later that it was Larys who got him out of the city. I assume this is because the show's increased focus on Larys as the new Littlefinger would make him the obvious suspect anyway, so there's no point in being coy.

I would agree with your thought on the showrunners getting thrown a curveball by the eight-episode count were it not for the fact that they’re starting to say that season three will have the same amount. No word on the fourth and final season’s episode count. What we’ve seen thus far, four seasons sounds about right for the story, I’m guessing. Hadn’t heard anything about the planned Bent-Neck Lady style presentation of the peek into River’s diary. In addition to the knowledge about the random Northern girl getting a lucky shot in, I would also be curious if Daemon got insider information about his descendant going mad queen with the cheese sliding off her cracker, and how that plotline made perfect fucking sense, rushed though the execution was in seasons seven and eight. I somehow completely missed Simon in the Thor movie. You said that, I said, “Wait, seriously!?” looked into that, then bemoaned, “...That movie seriously wasted an actor of that level of talent like that!? Goddamn.” The whole season with Simon as Simon, my brother and I kept making The Death of Stalin references, even outright calling the character Beria. I must be more out of it than I thought as I heard zero word about Sharako Lohar, character or casting of who would play the character. Fair point on the Dark Fate vibes, though I do note that aside from momentary befuddlement, Tyland otherwise rolled with things on that quick. Similarly, fair point on the prounouns, though as you noted, not much attention has been drawn to it. I heard the kiss was improvised. I heard that the day after that episode aired as people kept talking about it. It would explain why it comes right the fuck out of nowhere and nothing further comes from it. Curious if it does come back in the next season, what Daemon’s going to make of it, or anyone else in the council for that matter. Or has Rhaenyra not thought that through? The scuttlebutt I’ve heard has been saying that the book readers are as curious about what’s up with Otto as people like me who hasn’t read the source material. It at least means we’re all in the same boat, though I’m trying very hard not to think too much about it so as not to build up anything in my head. If we’re going with Rhaena as Jeannie, fine, so long as she gets to do that impressive triple-kick at some point. Could perhaps do without the Charlie Sheen cameo though. I could see that reasoning about the Larys thing. As I recall, people said they’ve already done that with the killing of his father and brother. They said, if I recall what was said properly, that those killings in Harrenhal were more ambiguous and never solved, and though Larys was suspected, it could never be proven that he did it. Thus, similar to how it feels here based on what you said, Larys has the greater focus, most everyone would likely just assume he did it anyway, so there’s no point in being coy about it. One thing for sure, hopefully I can avoid spoilers for the upcoming seasons, barring the ones I’m already stuck knowing, and I’m not going to say what just yet. Plus, who knows if things will change, though the one is for sure set in stone.

Well, for all we know there was a ton more with Simon that got cut like so much else. And it's definitely a sign of how much respect he has in the industry that he's included in the top portion of the closing credits for such a brief cameo. One other thought I had is there's a significant amount of sexual karma shown in this finale and I have no idea if it's deliberate. Aegon, who went full Weinstein as a teenager, loses his junk in an exceptionally painful way. Criston, who's not even pathetic enough to be an actual incel and has to aspire to be one, is left guilt-ridden and certain he's going to suffer a horrible deserved death soon. And Tyland, who as far as we've seen has been a perfect gentleman all the way through his life, gets to borrow a pirate harem. I was wondering, do you know about the Surf Dracula thing? I figured I should ask after the Leopards Eating Faces thing was a surprise.

I’m aware of how Simon is revered across the pond and anything I’ve seen him in, I’ve loved him in. Hopefully he gets more time in Marvel, or we could go multiverse and have him play someone else. I could go for him as the Penguin in Batman stuff. I have heard others noting the same about Aegon’s losing his junk in the particularly painful manner. My own gut reaction after feeling pain was to say, “Oof. THAT will ruin his weekend.” I apparently continue to demonstrate that I’m not with it as I hadn’t heard the term “Surf Dracula” until you said it. Looked it up. If I understood the definition right, I get its use here, even if I’m none to broken up about the lack of big dragon battles. Of course, I remember people being impatient with the Prequel Trilogy with Anakin not being Darth Vader sooner than when it happened, whilst I was happy to wait. Same with the fantastic Emperor content in the Prequels, though that also had the patient waiting game where all the promotional and supplementary material kept pretending like Palpatine and Darth Sidious were two completely separate people, and I kept saying, “Fine. You want to keep acting like they’re not one in the same, I can play that game too.” I’m Team Green, Alicent is my favorite character of the show, followed by Otto, though Simon did rise the ranks; he’s up there with Helaena. My brother’s more Team Neutral, and the two of us don’t have the dragons as a high priority, so we’re good, even if I do concede how others might be more upset by that as I’ve been seeing some comments that are getting nasty.

I don't accept that the Prince that was Promised prophecy was wrong. I don't think Arya would have had the chance without Jon and Daenerys leading their armies to Winterfell. Also, the show is not run by D&D and therefore may have a completely different prophecy fulfilment in mind, one where I don't have to do mental gymnastics like 'the Night King would never have exposed himself if he didn't think he'd beaten the Targaryens.' As far as casting a trans woman as a person with male pronouns is concerned, this is the World of Ice and Fire. They don't have reassignment technology and they don't seem to have a concept of trans identity, so it makes sense that someone biologically male would be referred to as 'him' even though they dressed and presented as female and trained their voice accordingly. Plus Lohar is occupying a stereotypically male role in society by leading armies and having wives. As long as the actor is fine with her (if that's their preferred pronoun) character being referred to as him, then it should be the same level of okay as Emma D'Arcy playing a woman. I'm personally team black, but it's because I believe in the rule of the king's law, not because I find their side more compelling. Next season I hope we get more Jace and Baela scenes.
