3x07 : Great seeing you clock Wolffe early Jess, especially since he keeps his armour design later too though it isn't shown much, and though he was in several Clone Wars episodes (notably the one where he gave a lot of grief to C-3P0 if you remember!), he wasn't too prominent in the show, despite being the second-in-command behind Plo Koon for his battalion. I've said it elsewhere, but one thing I think some love about this series, is it shows that the Empire is a formidable enemy for our heroes. Rebels was a bit more fast and loose, and had fun with them in the earlier seasons before it ramped up; but every time the Empire comes for the crew and their allies, they are truly threatening and there isn't many incompetent villains on their side here. Hence every episode can have you biting your nails because we don't know the fates of our crew. Glad you were able to make things out clearly in these couple of episodes, since some complained about the lighting being too dark and many had to adjust their screen brightness. Anyway onto the episode. I love the scene with Crosshair sniping at the CX. He's still missing, whereas before he would have took him out in one hit. However adding the grenade onto his shot was a nice move and puts the CX on the defensive. "you're as bad as Hunter" - "oh I'm much worse!" : Haha, I love the bond between Crosshair and Omega now. He may be the grumpiest brother, but he's going to be looking out for her as much as Hunter and the others will! :D I also like the next scene between Howzer and Crosshair. As Howzer was the one who was in Crosshair's face last ep about how he doesn't trust him and blames him for what happened to his squad from Ryloth; its good to see him see Crosshair is changed, so asks him what happened. And we see how important loyalty is to Crosshair, if we recall in the finale of season 1 when he says to Hunter "you weren't loyal to me!", and that was one of the reasons he didn't go back with the rest of the squad in that finale. Now he's seen that how the Empire treats all clones and saw that the loyalty from them wasn't forthcoming and thats what finally opened his eyes about what this new regime was, and that he had to get out. I was so nervous with the possibility of Crosshair possibly dying here, especially after him being back with the squad. There is also a hint of the same theme Kevin Kiner used when Tech died to just amp it up! Those CX Troopers are a real problem. And that its Howzer who saves Crosshair from going over the waterfall is a nice touch. Its interesting that these formidable CX Troopers are going after clones specifically it seems, just like what the Empire does later with Inquisitors going after their own fellow force users (and in many cases ex-Jedi). They do like to turn brethren against each other. We can see Wolffe is where Crosshair was. He's not seen the atrocities yet the Empire is now doing, so is staying loyal to them. However, he acted honourably thoroughout this episode, showing that his moral code is just; he's just not ready to get out yet. We know he ends up with Rex and Gregor later however, so we do know he eventually has enough. Oh and Gregor is on the shuttle with Echo too, as a nod to that union later. :) I like the end scene where Wolffe's underling queries his choice, and he tells them that may be they are on the wrong side to him, but that they are still clones, who have been through all that they have, and you can see the rest of his clone squad stand up with pride at those lines. Get out soon Wolffe! Do it for Rex and for Plo! Oh and of course CX2 gets out of the water at the end, like some freakin' Terminator!! Hunter telling Rex at the end, he can't win this fight against the Empire. We know Rex (and Wolffe) makes it all the way to Endor, so eventually does win it! There will be more hardship over the next twenty years for all of them however, so for now they have to just survive...

3x08 : Haha I love the deadpan no reaction from Crosshair to Omega mentioning how Phee is "a liberator of ancient wonders!", Crosshair is all about facts and logic, similar to Tech I suppose. Love Hunter telling Omega to ask Crosshair about getting his hand fixed. As you note Jess, Crosshair won't listen to him, but he knows the bond is strong with Omega and Crosshair so can get through to him that way. Great leadership shown by Hunter there. Fennec's bar looks fun, have a drink, get shot and have a bottle smashed on your head! Fennec does have a code, which she later mentions (and is a lot like Boba Fett, hence the link up between the two later), and while you are on the job with her, she'll have your back. However don't expect her to have any morality about whether or not she'd hand in Omega to the Empire if given that job. Perhaps, like Boba, she softens as she ages, but she isn't there yet. He also had no issue taking money from anyone and everyone for decades until realising it was a mug's game, so its interesting how both he and Fennec end up partnering up, her with another clone at that too. Crosshair's hand issues are psychosomatic. His hand can't stop shaking as he is still traumatised by his time with the imps, especially with his confinement on Tantiss. He needs to heal, and that is only done with self-reflection and time, something he doesn't have either of just now, but meditation will help him stay in the present and not focus too much on the other shit he has going on. You can hear the pang of regret when Omega mentions that he's missed a lot with him saying "I know...". Crosshair puts on a facade, but he's actually quite sensitive behind that mask. The main showrunner of Bad Batch, Jennifer Corbett, served in the military so knows all about these issues, and I love that they are exploring PTSD with Crosshair into the story. So Wrecker, Hunter and Fennec are having fun in space Florida. More than the smells, the space crocodiles that we see later, and that you can't breathe freely or else you'd die; I'd hate the flies and other insects buzzing about more than anything there, eugh... Fennec mentions that the mark is as slippery as they come, and my god he was a toughie to take down. All those stun shots and he was still coming for them! I think he's a space praying mantis. Fennec definitely needed the boys help to bring him in. Obviously I won't spoil who the contact is, but Fennec doesn't exactly double cross our boys here either. She merely contacts the person, though of course its done in such a way that our crew may become in peril. Can't wait for next week, the next two are great episodes.

Two excellent episodes today. The first one being the concluding half of a two-parter. Again, the action was tense in those two episodes back-to-back at two o’clock in the morning. It’s an amazing thing of seeing the stress-inducing action, then off to bed and sleep like a baby. Similar reaction to when Crosshair’s aim isn’t as precise, so he pulls out the bomb puck. Love X2’s body language when he sees the puck. A shame to lose Nemec. He is me when Batcher is licking him. And when Omega says that Batcher only bites half the time, in Nemec’s place, I’d say, “Uh, yeah, that’s none too reassuring, kid.” Crosshair is SO absurdly me when he’s in overprotective mode with Omega, and Omega grouses with that, “You’re as bad as my dad.” energy, to which Crosshair and I have that, “Don’t you ever, EVER say that I’m as bad as your dad. I’m much WORSE than that.” Your own reaction to that was sweet. Similarly, it is great how Howzer observes Crosshair and sees he’s not putting on an act. Love their commiseration of the shared feelings when they got tossed aside by the Empire. Loved your excitement over Crosshair and X2 engaged in a sneaky shootout, even if it did become more punchy and less sneaky as the scene progressed. Stress over losing Crosshair is great, but then Howzer saves him, making a man yell, “FUCK YEAH!!” and your own reaction was perfect. Loved Rex and Wolffe’s conversation and all your words about that. Speaking of Wolffe, hearing you say that you did recognize Wollfe made me proudly say, “You have great wisdom, Jess.” We know that Wolffe is with Rex and Gregor in Rebels, so we ultimately know he’ll defect. But it is not this day, though we see the seed planted. Most appropriate your reaction to X2 demonstrating how he is a goddamn cockroach and has survived again. He’s like that fucking Energizer bunny. There are the rebarbative group of fans who observed X2’s survival and attributed that to him being Tech, which he’s not. They said that since Tech so CLEARLY survived his big dramatic fall at the summit, it is without question that he can survive the fall here. Never mind that Tech surviving that fall at the summit is completely and physically fucking impossible, not to mention the goddamn FACT that Tech is dead and is therefore NOT X2, those fans would not hear any of that and they continued to stupidly retain their ironclad grasp of that theory. Morons. That line about thinking the war ending would mean an end to losing their brothers. That line was essentially a tagline for the season as a way to lean on the fourth wall to say the show is coming to an end. It is a particularly goddamn heartbreaking line that I can see so clearly how it overwhelmed you, Jess. Good of Phee to come through as much as she could. To her defense, the Jedi never seemed to talk much about the midichlorians, and the Emperor did destroy plenty of information about the Jedi. Definitely a shared laugh when Omega sells Phee as a liberator of ancient wonders, to which Crosshair has the deadpan unimpressed look that screams, “Meaning?” and Omega gives up and just calls Phee a pirate. We love seeing more Fennec. Ming-Na continues to be wonderful in the role. Love how you know Wrecker’s going to wrestle whatever big fucker, and he even silently thinks, “Goddamn it. Goddamn it, not again.” That bug is a quick little fucker, like you said. Love how you can tell Fennec is putting two and two together more than she’s letting on. And less from what Hunter and Wrecker are saying, and more what they don’t say, and how they silently respond to her reading them to filth. You spoke of how Fennec ever perhaps looks back on Hunter’s words on money not being anything. At this point, with her being in her mid-twenties say, perhaps not. Years later when she’s say fifty-five as that was Ming-Na’s age upon being cast as Fennec, surviving what she survived, seeing Boba in the state he’s in and he’s about thirteen years her junior, and there’s the actor subtext of Temuera and Ming-Na are both like my mom is in that they’re now in their sixties, (albeit my mom is now getting nearer seventy than sixty.) prioritizing some stability wouldn’t be a bad thing. In any case, the boys come through for Fennec. I like how when Wrecker complains, Fennec is unfazed, particularly as you note, she was pretty forward about the arrangement. Of course, she does not provide right away, and when Hunter complains about the deal not being what it was, a man chimes in, “Our dear Fennec is altering the deal, gentlemen, pray she does not alter it any further.” That last shot had our interest, leading to you feeling nervous. Now to talk about Crosshair’s hand. I too like how they emphasize that it’s far more shell shock than physical injury. It is still possible that some physical injury exists. Tellingly, when AZI queries about specifics on the experiments, Crosshair never answers. The greater cause is psychological. And it is great how as a society, we’ve evolved past people saying, “Don’t give me that old combat fatigue dodge.” and we demonstrate through Omega kindness and empathy. You mention how Omega is perhaps the only one who can get through to Crosshair. I like to think Tech could have too if he lived still. The heart breaks for Crosshair when he acknowledges how he’s lost time that he can never get back. Shared strong relation with the anxiety. Depression makes that infinitely WORSE, it’s not even funny. It’s never funny. I hear you on the forcing oneself to not have the anxiety does more harm than good. The depression just attacks that with the self-loathing with surgical precision. One thing that, well it doesn’t help per se, but it does dull the pain is acknowledging it may never end. That’s a thing I’ve got. What happened in my head is not something that’s ever getting better. And to address your apologies of not making any sense, no, Jess, you made perfect sense. I understand everything you said. I felt everything you said. You therefore have nothing to apologize for. I actually owe you my thanks for being brave enough to speak of what you spoke of. You expressed things so perfectly, and your words meant a great deal to me, Jess. Thank you for the amazing reaction.

Shared liking Jess clocking Wolffe. The show provides great showcase of the Empire being that formidable. It also speaks to how the batch was known to the Empire through Tarkin and I expect the Emperor would likely have been familiar with their exploits via military briefings. By contrast, the Shady Bunch isn’t quite a blip on the radar at first, and as the show goes on, the bigger guns come out. That progression, “You say ragtag group of rebels, you send say a dozen strormtroopers. You say small army of complete badasses, that’s a different situation. Cost you three times as much resources.” With the batch, they know how good they are and respond accordingly. And even in the other spots where the batch isn’t known, it shows how greater resources does help, and since they have the shoestring budget, it is more nail-biting. I could see things fine in the episode. It does show how bad Crosshair’s hand is if he misses. Luckily he keeps those explosives. Again, Crosshair is me with that protective energy that exists due to his bond with Omega, which is lovely. I’d be so like Crosshair as a dad, probably sound like Indiana Jones at that one point in Temple of Doom when he does the dad point and yells, “Short Round!! Quit fooling around with that kid, come on!!” The Crosshair and Howzer scene, it feels like loyalty is a big thing for all the clones. Crosshair seems to put higher stock into it. It leads to the great commiseration between the two brothers here. You do wonder for a moment if we would lose Crosshair. The heart swells to bursting seeing Howzer save Crosshair. Of course, Wolffe will do the honorable thing, like his commanding officer always taught him to be, and he will no doubt get out soon. For Plo. We all do seem to have frustration at X2 survivng. The CX troops are like the Inquisitorious with that “To catch a thief” mentality being perversely done with the clones and the Jedi. The Emperor clearly loves the Omen Trilogy as he takes that page of, “From the eternal sea he rises, creating armies on either shore, turning man against his brother, ‘til man exists no more.” and he runs with it. There is great comfort in Rex living all the way to Endor, even helping Han out in a very prominent scene. Now the clones do like how Barriss says to the one family, “Live” which I saw that the family asks what they can do to repay Barriss, I yelled, “SURVIVE!” before Barriss says what she says, making me say, “Or that too.”

Crosshair’s unimpressed look at Phee’s appellation is a great gut buster of a laugh moment. Like I said, he and Tech would have gotten along the best. Hunter does show how sharp he is by recognizing how Omega will likely have the best success with getting through to Crosshair about his hand. The watering hole that Fennec was at did look nice. Maybe a little loud for my tastes, but nice. Fennec does have her standards and code, whilst maintaining a flexible morality. Similar to Boba, similar to Jango and Zam before them. All of them, they make a deal with you, they’ll stick to it. They won’t much interest themselves in “why”. Rather, they think more often in terms of “when”, sometimes “where”; always “how much.” And even that has limits such as Jango and Zam going against certain clients when said clients planned to blow up the Republic. They even end up working with a Jedi to save the day. But that’s another story. It is great to see how Boba and Fennec evolved and soften. I mention age likely factors into it some. Given Ming-Na’s age is consistent with Fennec, Fennec would be about twenty-five at the oldest here, and fifty-five by the time of The Mandalorian matching how old Ming-Na was when cast. Boba’s about forty-one when The Mandalorian takes place and the brutal life he’s led since his dad’s death at the hands of Mace is catching up to him. Boba and Fennec both have such fascinating arcs, and I’m with Jess on needing so much more. I also keep noting we keep getting the badass bounty hunters like Jango, Zam, Cad, Boba, Fennec, Dengar, Bossk, IG-88, Mando, and even a pirate like Hondo can be an intimidating presence. All of them badass and intimidating. I keep wondering and would like to see a bounty hunter like the Ned Beatty character in Mikey and Nicky. That’d be interesting seeing a Star Wars bounty hunter like that. Well spoken on the plotline of Crosshair and his psychological troubles. God, does the heart break for him when he says “I know” in response to having missed so much. The boys had a time in space Florida, and they don’t even get to go to Disneyworld. Meaning Wrecker can’t get the Mantell Mix at Galaxy’s Edge. Damn! That mark was a slippery bug for sure. Now the waiting game for next week begins.

With the first episode just being an action conclusion to the first part, I don't have much to add, just that with our still not seeing C-X2's face by the end, I figured the odds had gone way down that he'd turn out to be anyone meaningful. Plus, Howzer and Crosshair patching things up was sorely needed after the way their last encounter went, so I loved seeing they were able to cram in in there. And one more time, the real event here is in the second episode with another classic Fennec adventure. By this point Ming-Na has this performance down to such an exact science that she can perfectly walk the line of a cold, emotionless voice performance without sounding like she's just phoning it in (just watch Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within to hear what that truly sounds like). For a while the franchise had gotten away from just having fun with a new planet, so it was a ton of fun getting back to that, even if it apparently has the same cinematographer as the final battle with the White Walkers.

Thomas Corp

Yeah, that we don’t see X2 unmasked by the end of this more or less destroys any chance of him being anyone significant, namely Tech. Of course, the traitorous voice in the back of my head noted it still would not be completely impossible for the writers to have such a moronic twist, but if that’s what was going to happen, they’d have been more upfront about that by this point. Again, I got more venting on that at a later time. They handled the burying of the hatchet between Crosshair and Howzer quite well. Another classic Fennec adventure is always a win, especially sharing it with Jess. Ming-Na does so excellent at that cold and clinical voice. The best spots are when the emotion peeks through whilst still being measured such as when she says, “You want to speed things up?” to the boys here, or like how you hear the rather quiet terror when she kills the sarlacc in Book of Boba Fett. It is a contrast hearing her voice as Fennec compared to Ming-Na’s natural voice like was heard in her interviews that she and Temurea took part in to promote Book of Boba, or the podcast with Katee which has that big highlight of them talking about the big Luke scene in Mandalorian. I think her voice in Mulan is quite close to her normal voice, albeit slightly different. Nice to get back to a fun new planet. Really most everybody seems to hire and/or emulate the cinematographer from the White Walker battle for some reason.
